Char-Lynn torque generators have been completelyredesigned to meet the needs of the changingmarketplace. These torque generators have servedthe industry well, providing:

Open Center Power Beyond
The pow er beyond steeringcontrol unit supplies steeringand auxiliary valve functions.The pow er beyond unit isused on m edium pressure,open center (fixeddisplacem ent pum p) system s.
W hen not steering, the pow erbeyond unit directs all inletflow to the auxiliary circuit.
H ow ever once steering isinitiated, part of the auxiliaryflow is diverted to steering.Since steering has priority, allflow , if required, w ill bediverted to steering. The tankport of the steering unit hasflow only w hen steering isoperated. Thus, flow out ofthe auxiliary (PB) port andthe tank port w ill fluctuate orstop depending on steeringinput.
The follow ing specialconsiderations should beaddressed w hen applyingpow er beyond steering:
Auxiliary valves(connected to PB ) m ustbe open center type.Slight bum p or kick m aybe felt in steeringw heel w hen auxiliaryfunctions are activatedduring steeringoperations.
Pum p flow not used forsteering is available atpow er beyond (PB )outlet, except atsteering stops w heretotal pum p flow goesover the system reliefvalve. Avoid auxiliaryfunctions that requireconstant flow w hilesteering.
Flow is only directed tothe tank port w hensteering is operated.Avoid system s w herereturn flow from tankport is used for auxiliaryfunctions.
Inlet pressure to thesteering unit w ill be thehigher of steeringsystem pressure orauxiliary valve pressure.

Load Sensing Circuits
C har-Lynn load sensingpow er steering uses
conventional or load sensingpow er supplies to achieveload sensing steering. Theuse of a load sensingsteering unit and a priorityvalve in a norm al pow ersteering circuit offers thefollow ing advantages:
Provides sm oothpressure com pensatedsteering because loadvariations in thesteering circuit do notaffect axle response orm axim um steering rate.
Provides true pow erbeyond systemcapability by splittingthe system into tw oindependent circuits.Pressure transients areisolated in each circuit.O nly the flow requiredby the steeringm aneuver goes to thesteering circuit. Flownot required forsteering is available foruse in the auxiliary
circuits.
Provides reliable operationbecause the steeringcircuit alw ays has flowand pressure priority.
Char-Lynn load sensingsteering control units andpriority valves can be used w ithopen center, closed center orload sensing system s. U se inan open center system w ith afixed displacem ent pum p or aclosed center system w ith apressure com pensated pum p,offers m any of the features of aload sensing system . Excessflow is available for auxiliarycircuits.
Listed below are thecom ponents of a typical loadsensing control circuit and abrief application description.

Steering Control UnitD esigned for specific ratedflow s and control pressures.It m ust be m atched w ith acontrol pressure in thepriority valve to obtainm axim um steering rates.H igher flow rates requirehigher control pressures.N eutral internal bleedassures com ponenttem perature equalization.
LS LineA LS line is alw aysneeded to sense pressuredow nstream from thevariable control orifice in thesteering control unit. This isbalanced by an internalpassage to the opposite sideof the priority control spool.
The total systemperform ance depends oncareful consideration of thecontrol pressure chosen andpressure drop in the C F line.
Steering Relief ValveM ust be factory set at least10 bar [145 PSl] above them axim um steering cylinderpressure requirem ent. M ostof the flow w ill be directedto the auxiliary circuit (EF)
w hen the relief setting isexceeded.
System Main ReliefValveA pressure reliefvalve for the auxiliary circuitand/or a m ain safety valve forthe protection of the pum p isrecom m ended and sized forthe m axim um pum p outputflow rate. If a m ain relief valveis used, it m ust be set abovethe priority circuit steeringrelief valve pressure setting.

Non-Load Reaction
A non-load reaction steeringunit blocks the cylinder portsin neutral, holding the axleposition w henever theoperator releases thesteering w heel.
Load ReactionA load reaction steering unitcouples the cylinder portsinternally (in the neutralposition) w ith the m etergear set. A xle forces arethen allow ed to return thesteering w heel to itsapproxim ate originalposition. C om parable toautom obile steering,gradually releasing thew heel m id turn w ill allowthe steering w heel to spin
back as the vehiclestraightens.
The cylinder system usedw ith load reaction unitsmust have equal oilvolume displaced in bothdirections. The cylindersshould be a parallel pair (asshow n) or one double rodend unit.Do not use with asingle unequal areacylinder system.

Integral valves are availablefor the C har-Lynn steeringcontrol unit. Included are:Inlet Relief Valve, CylinderPort Shock Valves, LS-ReliefValve, and A nti-C avitationValves for cylinder ports. Inaddition, a M anual SteeringC heck Valve for lim itedm anual steering is included.
The integral valves elim inatethe need for a separatevalve block, and providesversatility to m eet anysteering circuit standard.
Valve Description:
1 Anti-cavitation checkvalve for cylinder ports(R & L) protects steeringcircuit against vacuum(cavitation) conditions.
2 Cylinder Port ReliefValves(R & L) protectshoses against pressure
surge created by groundforces on the steered axle.
3 Manual Steering CheckValveconverts unit to ahand operated pum p forlim ited m anual steering.Included in all units exceptSeries 20, 25, and 40.**

Dual Steering Modes
Typically, the gerotorbetw een the SC U housingand the shift valve is thesm aller gerotor (firstgerotor). The shift valve isactivated by the operator,w hich allow s or preventsflow to the second gerotor.A separate solenoid valve
provides the pressure pilotsignal to shift theaforem entioned valve. TheO EM w ill define and providethe operator sw itch toactivate the solenoid valve.
Metered Steering Mode 1 The steering unit operatesthe sam e as a traditionalhydrostatic steering controlunit. Steering (flow ) is afunction of steering w heelrotations (rpm ). M etered(gerotor) steering providesprecise, responsive, andsm ooth steering. A ll the
flow is m etered by the firstgerotor, resulting in agreater num ber of turnslock-to-lock. In case ofpressure loss, the shift valveautom atically prevents flowto the second gerotor andem ergency steering isavailable via the first gerotor.

solution to m anually steer avehicle in an unpow eredm ode w ithout the need of aback-up pow er system resulting in a m oreeconom ical m achine.
The dual displacem entsteering unit uses tw ogerotors and a pressurecontrolled logic valve. Thelogic valve sw itches betw eentw o displacem ents, onedisplacem ent for m anualsteering and the total of both
displacem ents for pow eredoperation. The logic valve isspring returned to thesm aller m anualdisplacem ent w hen inletpressure falls below 8 bar[120 psi]. A bove 8 bar [120psi] the logic valve connectsboth gerotors to provide fullpow ered displacem ent.

Description
Cylinder damping can helpsmooth the steering actionof large articulated vehiclessuch as loaders, scrapers,and skidders. These vehicleshave overhanging weightwith high inertial loads. Thisenergy is dissipated by thecylinder damping orificeswhich bleed a small amountof flow from the cylinderport to tank.
