PAID INTERNS EXCEEDED THEIR PEERS
IN JOB OFFERS AND STARTING SALARIES
63% of paid interns received at least one job offer
37% of unpaid interns got an offer;
35% no internship—received at least one job offer.
The median starting salary for new grads with paid internship experience
is $51,930—far outdistancing their counterparts with an unpaid internship
($35,721) or no internship experience ($37,087).

• According to the 2016 JSC Graduate Survey:
• 38% of the students who interned are currently employed at the internship/practicum site
• 14% of the students received a job offer at their internship/practicum site to continue but declined
• 21% report being hired elsewhere because of internship/ practicum experience

INTERNSHIP SPECIFICS
• Internships start: ~late August, mid January, mid May
• Best to post opportunities three months prior
• Contracts are due at the end of the preceding semester
• Typically last 15 weeks (can be shorter) • 40 hours on-site/credit • Most majors require 3-6 credit internships
(120-240 hours or 8-16 hours/week)

WHAT JSC EXPECTS OF SITE SUPERVISORS
• Help the student complete the job-description specifics of the internship
contract
• Be a professional mentor (orient the student to the site and its culture, confer regularly
with the student and his/her faculty
supervisor, offer training opportunities, etc. )
• Complete progress reports, if requested, a midterm evaluation, and a final evaluation
of the student’s work performance
