Justlikemanyothersbeforeme,IamagraduateoftheUniversityofStAndrews.Youwouldhavethoughtthathavingspentthelast4yearsstudyingSustainableDevelopment,theproductionofaguideon‘beingsustainable’wouldbequitestraightforward.Wellitisinfactquitethecontrary.Producingthisguide,withtheinvaluablehelpoftheSustainableDevelopmentSociety,TransitionStAndrewsandtheEnvironmentandEnergyTeamatEstates,requiredalotofthinkingaboutwhat‘beingsustainableinStAndrews’actuallymeant.
Thereisnoonesizefitsall,andthisguidedoesnotbegintopretendthatthereis.WhatwedohopeisthatasyoureadthisguideyouwillunderstandmoreaboutwhatitmeanstobepartofStAndrews,toliveinthissmallcoastaltown,andstudyattheonlyUniversitywitha‘RaisinWeekend’,andwhatstandstothreatensuchanexistence.Inaworldofshiftingfinancial,environmentalandsocialpressures,wemustfindourownwaytoprotectwhatwetreasure,andintheprocess,challengeourvalues.Wemustremindourselvesthatthislifestyle,town,worldandresources,arenotjustsolelyforus.It’sfortheotherpeoplewework,studyortravelwith,orHamishthetowncat,orasmostfamouslyreferredtoindiscussionsofsustainabledevelopment,forthefuturegenerationsyettocome.
Inthefaceofthedevastatingimpactsofclimatechange,peakoil,thefinancialcrises,unprecedentedlossesinbiodiversity,povertyandhumanrightsabuses,theworldischanging.Don’tgetmewrong,I’mnotafanofdoomandgloombuttheextentofchangenecessarytopreventsuchpredictionsisvast.Solet’sbreakitdown,stepbystep.Andhere,youcanstartwiththepointsexploredinthisguide.

Chapter 2: Sustainability in Education and Policy What is ‘Sustainability’?Well,tobehonest,thereisnodefinitivedefinition.Insimpleterms:
Sustainabilitymeansusingtheresourcesoftheplanetinawaythatisequitableandensuresthatwedon’tleaveitanyworseoffthanwhenwearrivedhere.
Ratherthanatraditionalstyleoftrade-offsbetweenbenefitandcost,itencouragesconsiderationofthesocial,environmentalandeconomicimpactsofactivities,toensurethatmassivesocialorenvironmentalbenefitsaren’truledoutsimplybecausetheycostmoneyorrequirepeopletoconsiderchangingtheirbehaviour.Tryingtolivesustainabilitycantakemanyforms–lesseningyourcarbonimpactthroughdrivingless,eatingmorelocallyorturningdownyourheatingtominimiseglobalwarmingenhancingsocialcapitalthroughbuildingbondswithinthelocalcommunitytoensureitisahappyandmoreresilient*placetolive,thinkingfurther-afieldandaimingtobuymoreresponsibilityandethically,andmanyotheractions.ThisguideshouldgiveyouagoodfewideasabouthowtoeasilybemoresustainableinyourlivingwithinStAndrews,butitisbynomeansexhaustive.

Therearetrade-offstobemadeinsustainability.Forexample,wealltraveltoStAndrews,whichhasacarbonimpact,butweare(hopefully!)enhancingourintellectualandsocialcapitalbybeinghere.Whatisaneasybehaviourchangetosome,mayseemimpossibletoothers,andpeople’sprioritiesdiffer.Asyouread,trytothinkabouttheimpactareasthatapplymosttoyourwayofliving,andconsiderwhatyoucoulddotominimiseyourlastingnegativeeffectontheplanet.Sustainabilityisnotaboutpreachingtopeoplehowtolive,despitehowitisoftenportrayedbythemedia,butaboutindividualsmakingaconsciouschoicetoconsiderothers,andtheplanet,intheiractivities.Otherwisethebehaviourchangeisunsustainable(sorry...)!
The Role of Higher Education Institutions in Addressing SustainabilitySustainabilityresearchisacomplexissuebecauseitisinterdisciplinaryanddoesn’tnecessarilyprovideanimmediatefinancialgain–thereforebusinessestendtoignoremuchofit.Theonusthereforeoftenfallsonacademicinstitutionstoleadthewayinthisessentialareaofresearch.
AcademicinstitutionssuchasStAndrewspridethemselvesontheirresearchasmuchasontheirteaching.Forsustainabilitytobecomemainstreamitisvitalthatallacademicdepartmentscontributetoresearchwhichwillassistthehumanraceinadoptingamoresustainablelifestyle,andthatallresearchextendsoutwardsinaway

thatisaccessibletoall.Thiscanhappenthroughthepublicationofarticlesandotherdocuments,thefacilitationofcross-departmentalresearchordiscussions,andthroughdirectteaching.
Finally,itisessentialthathighereducationinstitutionspracticewhattheypreach,bymakingchoicesandchallenginginternalbehavioursinawaywhichreflectstheoutcomesofsuchresearch.Throughdoingsotheycanprovideapositiverolemodelforothereducationalinstitutions,businessandindividualstoadoptmoresustainablewaysofconductingtheirday-to-dayactivities.
Education for Sustainability: The Sustainable Development Degree ProgrammeTheSustainableDevelopment(SD)degreeprogrammeisexceptional,notonlywithintheUK,butglobally.ThisuniquelyinterdisciplinaryprogrammeiscoordinatedfromtheSchoolofGeographyandGeosciences,buttopicsaretaughtfrom11differentschoolsacrosstheUniversity.Thefirstgraduatesonlyqualifiedin2008,andsincethenthecoursehasflourished.Threecohortshavenowgraduatedfromtheundergraduatedegreeandtherecentlyestablishedpostgraduateprogrammeisnowintoit’s2ndcohort.
TheSDProgrammeisnowconsideredScotland’sflagshiphighereducationdegreeprogrammerelatedtosustainability,andwasshowcasedbytheScottishGovernmentasanexampleofgoodpracticewithinScotland’scontributiontotheUNDecadeofEducationforSustainableDevelopment(2005-2014).In2009theSDprogrammealsowonthe2009 Green Gown awardforbestUKCoursepromotingsustainability.TheGreenGownAwardsrecogniseexceptionalinitiativesbeingtakenbyuniversitiesandcollegesacrosstheUKtobecomemoresustainable.
Throughoutthesustainabledevelopmentdegree,beitundergraduateorpostgraduate,studentscriticallyappraisethedefinitionsof,andresponsesto,thesustainabilityagenda.Settingoutontheroadtowardssustainabilityisanenormouschallenge,requiringsocial,economicandenvironmentalconcernstobebalanced.TheSDprogrammeexplorestheissuesunderlyingmanyofthemostchallengingglobalproblemssuchasclimatechange,poverty,naturalresourcedepletion,peakoil,decliningbiodiversityandsocialjusticebyusingtheUNfivepriorityareas:

St Andrews Sustainability Institute (SASI)TheStAndrewsSustainabilityInstitute(SASI)isagroupofpeopleattheUniversityofStAndrews,workingtowardsasustainablefuture.ResearchersfromacrossthewholeUniversityareworkingonthesustainabilityjigsawthroughSASI,pullingtogetherthepiecesneededtocreateasustainableworld.SASI’smissionis:
“To facilitate research, teaching, knowledge transfer and debate in order to enable the transformational change required to integrate sustainable thinking and actions into the foundations of everyday life”
SASIalsoorganiseresearchprojects,seminarsanddebatestosupporttheUniversityinitsprogresstowardssustainabledevelopment.Additionally,SASIarefundamentaltotheassistanceofthePostgraduatecoursesinSustainableDevelopmentatStAndrews.Inrecognitionoftheirhardwork,theuniversitywasawardedthefirsteverawardforOutstandingContributiontoSustainableDevelopmentintheTimesHigherAwards2006.TheInstitute’sDirector,ProfessorJanBebbington,providedtheforewordtothisguide.
Policies and Strategies on Sustainable DevelopmentTheUniversityofStAndrewsisattheforefrontofthesustainabledevelopmentmovement.InDecember2005,theUniversityapprovedaSustainableDevelopmentPolicyandStrategy.TheSustainableDevelopment(SD)StrategyoutlinesthecommitmentsmadebytheUniversitytowardscontinuousimprovementofitsenvironmental,economicandsocialperformanceinordertoreduceitssustainabilityimpacts.Thereare7keyobjectiveswithannuallyupdatedtargetstohelpdelivertheseobjectives.TheSDStrategyhaspavedthewayforseveralsignificantdevelopments.In2008,theUniversitywasawardedtheCarbonTrustStandardandin2009,theUniversitystrengtheneditscommitmenttosustainabilitybysigningaClimateCommitment.ThenextsignificantprogressionistheproductionofanewSustainableDevelopmentStrategytoleadusthroughthenextdecade.

Chapter 3: Energy and Carbon ConsiderationsCarbonDioxide(CO2)isintheveryairwebreathe.Weneeditforallformsoflife,buttoomuchanditbecomesathreattolife.Anexcessofcarbondioxideintheatmosphereisdrasticallyexacerbatingtheprocessofglobalwarming,resultingindangerousclimatechange.Unlesscarbonemissionsaredramaticallydecreasedonagloballevel,thentheplanetcouldwarmbyanythingbetween1.1°Cand6.4°Coverthenext100years.Anyofthesefigureswillmeansealevelrisewithpotentialfloodingofcoastalareas,biodiversityloss,weatherextremes,shiftsinseasonalpatternsandascarcityofvaluableresourcessuchasfreshwater.Tomakesureyourlivingis‘sustainable’,leavingtheworldasweenjoyittodayforfuturegenerations,reducingyourcarbonfootprint*isessential.

A Low Carbon UniversityTheterms‘carbonemissions’,‘carbonreduction’and‘carbonfootprint’areprettymuchunavoidable,especiallyforpublicly-fundedorganisationsliketheUniversityofStAndrews.InworkingcloselywiththeCarbonTrust,theUniversityissteadilyworkingonreducingitscarbonfootprint.TheCarbonManagementProgramme,StrategicImplementationPlandescribesindetailtheUniversity’scommitmenttoreducingitscarbonfootprintbytacklingavarietyofissues,throughconstantanalysisandmodificationoftheUniversity’senvironmental,socialandeconomicimpacts.
The University of St Andrews is aiming to become carbon neutral for energy consumption by 2015.Thiswillbeachievedthrougha75%renewableenergymixby2015ofwindpower,solarpowerandbiomass.EnergyconsumptioncurrentlyresultsinthemajorityoftheUniversity’scarbonemissions,makingup52%oftotalemissionsin2009.
TheUK’sClimateChangeActcommitsScotlandandtherestoftheUKtoreducingcarbonemissionsby80%bytheyear2050(on1990levels)butifthisistobeachieved,theremustbeactiononalmosteverylevelofsociety.

Fairtrade University St AndrewsWhetherit’sgrabbingacoffeeonthewaytoanearlymorninglectureorbuyingsomeclothesattheweekend,howitwasmadematters.FairTradeisagrowing,internationalmovementworkingtoensurethatproducersinpoorcountriesgetafairdeal.
