Standard Dwgs 19-01.pdf_NR_Standard_Drawing_Index_June-4-2019.pdf_StandardDwgsExample.pdf
Some of the Standard Drawings for use in the Northern Region have been updated and a few have been added.
In the Northern Region we are still operating under the attached Directive 19-01.
Sarah Schacher wanted me to include the following:
From Sarah:
The reason we are still using NR Design Directive 19-01 is because Standard Plan Development Reports (SPDRs)are not yet available. SPDRs are the vehicle by which registrants (licensed engineers) will be able to takeresponsible charge for the application of a Standard Plan on any given project (see Chief Engineer’s Directivedated January 25, 2019). As soon as SPDRs are available, we will follow the Chief Engineer’s directive for thoseStandard Plans and not follow NR Design Directive 19-01.
We will keep you informed with any updates to this. Joe Kemp is NR’s contact on the status/schedule ofindividual Standard Plan updates.
As noted in the Directive, the drawings are in the following directory:H:\CAD\MTR\STD\NR (\\dotfpgnas\precon\CAD\MTR\STD\NR)
I have attached a Northern Region Standard Drawing Index. This index explains why not all of the Statewide“Standard Plans” are available as Standard Drawings and includes other information. This index will be kept up to datein the above directory.
There is also a H:\CAD\MTR\STD\_READ THIS FIRST directory which contains the Directive and other informationexplaining the Northern Region policy.
Standard Drawings are to be include in the plan set as “V” Sheets. The “Standard Drawing(s)” wording is important toagree with the Specifications. The title on the sheets should read “STANDARD DRAWING X-00.00”. This title is a fieldwhich is modified using the sheet set. I have attached an example to show the Index of Sheets and a Standard Drawingsheet.

MEMORANDUM State of Alaska Department of Transportation & Public Facilities
Northern Region Design and Engineering Services
TO: Distribution DATE: December 7, 2018 FILE: H:\Preconstruction\Preconstruction Engineer\NR Design Directives\2019\Standard Dwgs 19-01.pdf PHONE NO: 451-5361 FROM: Sarah E. Schacher, P.E.
Preconstruction Engineer Northern Region
SUBJECT: Use of Standard Drawings in Advertised Plans NR Design Directive 19-01
Effective immediately, projects advertised in Northern Region will no longer incorporate Standard Drawings sealed for repetitive use, nor will we include Standard Drawings as an appendix to the specifications.
• Standard Drawings that are suitable for a project and that meet the Department’s design standards are to be sealed and included in the plans without modification. Retain the title of the standard drawings that are included in the plans so that cross-references within specifications and other plan sheets remain correct. CAD details for these drawings are located on our server at H:\CAD\MTR\STD\NR
• Standard Drawings that are not suitable for a project or that do not meet the Department’s design standards are to modified and included in the plans and sealed as project specific details. If the project manager or designer are unable to seal a suitable Standard Drawing or modified project specific detail, the project manager is responsible to find a registrant who is, either elsewhere in the Department or through a consultant contract.
While this is a significant change from past practice, our perspective on the importance of standardization has not changed. Use Standard Drawings rather than project specific details unless the Standard Drawing is not suitable for the project or does not meet the Department’s design standards. The Final PS&E and Revised Final PS&E transmittal memos will be modified to track the impact of this change. At the time of any Final and/or Revised Final PS&E submittal, design managers will document the approximate cost and schedule impacts associated with this change in practice.
