Choosing the Be,er Part!
We live in a very busy world that puts a lot of pressure on people
to remain constantly acve. The not so subtle message is that our
value as human beings can only be measured by our “producve”
output. Our Facebook accounts need to be constantly updated to
inform our friends of what we are doing. When applying for a job,
our resume needs to show a constant theme of accomplishments
via connued educaon, projects completed, promoons received,
professional associaons joined, etc. College applicaons need to
demonstrate a dizzying amount of student acvity. Even our reli-
gious lives can become focused on what we are doing (money do-
nated, parish councils, CYO, or other volunteer projects). O)en-
mes the things we are doing are very good and have noble mo-
vaons. However, we can become so overly focused on what we
are doing that we lose sight of the why we are doing it. In this
weekend’s Gospel reading (Luke 10:3842) Our Lord invites us to re
examine our busyness and properly priorize our acons through
prayer. !
Our Gospel reading tells the story of “Martha and Mary,” two sis-
ters who encountered Jesus in two very different ways. Jesus and
His disciples were welcomed into their home by Martha. She was
following the Jewish tradion of offering hospitality to travelers
and was following the social custom of the me for the women of
the house to serve their guests. Mary on the other hand was fol-
lowing a very unconvenonal approach to Jesus based on the so-
cial expectaons of the me. Mary was at Our Lord’s feet a;en-
vely listening to Him speak. It was not customary for women to
take such a posion in the living area where the men were being
served. When Martha complained to Jesus that Mary wasn’t help-
ing her, Our Lord doesn’t rebuke Martha. Rather, He sees that she
is weighed down and anxious about living up to the social expecta-
ons of what she should be doing. Mary had “chosen the be;er
part.” !
There are some clear lessons that can be drawn from this story.
First, we don’t need to “do” anything to earn God’s love. God
doesn’t care about how we are living up to social convenons or
our standing in society. He desires only for us to have a personal
relaonship with Him. This can be best fostered through prayer.
Second, trying to keep up with all of the social pressures can lead
us to become ina;enve to our personal relaonship with the
Lord. As a result we can become anxious and burdened. But by
roong our life in prayer, we foster our relaonship with God, and
our acvies then flow from this relaonship. Our work becomes
reoriented into giving back to the Lord by service to others. It be-
comes a source of joy in our life. As we apply this lesson to life, we
can more easily overcome the distracons of our culture’s expec-
taons where prayer can be put on the back burner. Our Lord
makes it very clear that we have to resist this urge and instead
make prayer a priority. If we persevere we will be rewarded with a
greater peace of mind, a sense of purpose, and a freedom from
never ending expectaons. !
!
God Bless, !
Deacon Brian Connolly !

Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults
Is there a non-Catholic you know who has expressed interest in our faith and becoming a member of our Church family… or, perhaps, is a baptized Catholic who has not completed their Sacraments of Initiation? If so, you can be an
evangelizer by telling them of our parish’s RCIA process, which
offers catechesis and faith formation in preparation for the Sacraments and initiation into the Catholic Church. Sister Eileen will be happy to give further information
and answer any questions about the RCIA. You can contact Sr. Eileen at 610-296-8899 or
