FROM THE PASTOR’S DESKThe Scripture readings for this holiday weekend bring comfort to the troubled and a icted. The rst reading, from the prophet Zechariah, is brimming with hope for the restora on of the kingdom of Israel. A er a long exile in Babylon, and the rebuilding of the Temple in Jerusalem, the ancient Jewish people were looking forward to a messianic king who would restore Israel to its former greatness. This future king would come in peace, “meek, and riding on a young donkey” and not mounted on a horse as the kings of Israel did during war me. There is a sense of exuberant joy in this passage. The messianic king would banish chariots and warrior’s bows, and all instruments of violence from the na ons, and would proclaim peace to the ends of the earth. This prophe c vision is ful lled in the kingship of Christ, a just Savior, who rode humbly on a colt in his triumphal entry into Jerusalem shortly before he gave his life for us on the cross.
The second reading from St. Paul encourages us to live in the Spirit of Christ who lives within us. This is the Spirit who raised Christ from the dead and gives life to our mortal bodies as well. The Spirit enables us to enter into and foster our rela onship with God, and to live in the grace of Christ rather than giving in to every urge and desire of the esh. In the gospel reading, Jesus praises those who live with childlike docility and obedience to the truths of God and not according to the secular wisdom of the learned. He goes on to invite his followers to take upon themselves the gentle yoke of gospel by centering their lives on doing the will of God. Jesus’ words undoubtedly brought comfort to those heavily burdened by the yoke of legalism imposed on them by the religious elite of rst century Judaism. These scribes and Pharisees demanded exact observance of hundreds of laws as the price for jus ca on in the sight of God. Jesus’ yoke does not disregard all the laws of Moses, but o ers something lighter and be er, and that is obedience to his teaching and adherence to the deeper commandments of love. As we con nue to deal with the consequences of the coronavirus in our lives, may these readings from the Word of God bless us all with the Lord’s comfort!
News and Notes:
Happy Feast Day (the actual day is July 6) to all our St. Maria Gore Church members. St. Maria was born of a poor family at Corinaldi, Italy, in 1890. She spent a di cult childhood near Ne uno assis ng her mother in domes c du es. She was a pious young woman who spent much of her me praying. In 1902 she was stabbed to death, preferring to die rather than violate her chas ty. At St. Maria’s canoniza on ceremony in 1950, Pope Pius XII said the following: “It is well known how this young girl had to face a bi er struggle with no way to defend herself. Without warning a vicious stranger burst upon her, bent on raping her and destroying her childlike purity…with splendid courage she surrendered herself to God and his grace and so gave her life to protect her virginity.” Here is the collect prayer in the Roman Missal for the feast of St. Maria Gore : “O God, author of innocence and lover of chas ty, who bestowed the grace of martyrdom on your handmaid, the Virgin Saint Maria Gore , in her youth, grant, we pray, through her intercession, that, as you gave her a crown for her steadfastness, we, too may be rm in obeying your commandments…through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God forever and ever. Amen.” We are very blessed to have two holy women, our Blessed Mother and St. Maria Gore as our two church patronesses in our newly merged parish---which is temporarily named St. Maria Gore -Our Lady of the Assump on Parish un l we recommend 3 names to Cardinal Sean O’Malley and he chooses a permanent name for our single parish with two worship sites. Your sugges ons for a new parish name are welcome un l August 1.
Happy Independence Day weekend to all of you!
If you are visiting our parish, we extend a warm welcome. Please feel free to introduce yourself to the celebrant. If we can be of service to you in any way, please let us know. We look forward to seeing you again.

FEAST OF SAINT MARIA GORETTIPrayer to Saint Maria Goretti
Heroic and angelic Saint Maria Goretti, we kneel before you
to honor your persevering fortitude and to beg your gracious aid.
Teach us a deep love for the precepts of our Holy Church; help us to see in them the very voice
of our Father in Heaven. May we preserve without stain
our white baptismal robe of innocence.
May we who have lost this innocence kneel humbly in Holy Penance,
and with the absolution of the priest, may the torrent of Christ's precious Blood
flow into our souls and give us a new courage to carry the burning light of God's love
through the dangerous highways of this life until Christ our king
shall call us to the courts of Heaven.
Amen.

We are con nuing our series of ar cles for the Year of the Eucharist, an Archdiocesan ini a ve to invite Catholics to learn more about the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist.
Did you know why it is valuable to visit the Blessed Sacrament? Because Christ himself is present in the sacrament of the altar, he is to be honored with the worship of adora on. “To visit the Blessed Sacrament is… a proof of gra tude, an expression of love, and a duty of adora on toward Christ our Lord.” (CCC, no. 1418; Pope Paul
VI, Mystery of Faith, no. 66)
Adora on calls us to take a break from our busy lives to quiet our minds and open our hearts to Jesus Christ. Like spending quality me with any loved one -- deepening that rela onship -- the blessings are abundant. But, Adora on isn’t necessarily about what we will get out of it. True, the graces dispensed by God help us grow in holiness, but the primary purpose of Adora on is right there in the name of the act: to adore the One present to us in the Eucharist. Instead of thinking of it as you sacri cing your valuable me for Christ, remember that the Lord is spending this hour with you.
Eucharis c Adora on is o ered every Monday evening from 7:00-8:00 pm at Our Lady of the Assump on Church, and every First Thursday from 9:30 am-12:00 noon at St. Maria Gore Church.
