Lord, Hear our Prayer.
The pilgrim experience of going by foot to Santiago de Compostella, the shrine of St. James, reached its high point this week at the feast of the Apostle, with tens of thousands of pilgrims on the road. Typically, they cover twelve to twenty miles a day through rough territory. The difficult journey and the often-primitive lodging facilities are made bearable by the joy of the pilgrims, their songs and prayers. When their journey is documented properly, they receive the scallop shell, a reminder not only of James the fisherman, but also his call to fish for human beings and to baptize the nations. In the Middle Ages, those who wore this badge on their hats were granted lodging and hospitality wherever they went. Next to the palm, the sign of a Jerusalem pilgrim, the scallop shell was most highly prized. In the Middle Ages, some people so enjoyed the pilgrim road, although it was filled with discomfort and danger, that they spent most of their lives on the road. Today, some people take up the route for exercise, but are drawn gradually into the spirituality of the journey. As you make your summer travels, always fold in an element of pilgrimage: a long walk through beautiful countryside, a visit to a church, a prayer of grati-tude for your journey through life’s hills and valleys.
May I never boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ.— Galatians 6:14

Do You Play Piano? Would you be interested in participating in the Liturgy in a new way? St Laurence is looking for additional accom-panists to support our Music Ministry during weekend Masses. Perhaps you are willing to share your talent with our parish in this special way. Please contact the parish office for additional information as to how you can be involved in our Music Ministry.
In our Gospel this weekend, Jesus teaches us about the power of petitionary prayer. He reminds us multiple times that we are beloved sons and daughters of God the Father, and that our Father in Heaven very much desires to grant the requests that we make to Him. However, we have to remember that parents know what is best for their children and they cannot always give their kids what they ask for. If a child asks to have pizza and candy for dinner every night, a good parent will deny that request be-cause they know that if they give those things to their child then it will end up hurting them. Instead, the parents offer them food that is good for them and that will keep them strong and healthy. Brothers and sisters, we are literally “kids” when we pray to God our Father. Sometimes when we ask for things that seem good to us, our Heavenly Father can see that what we are asking for will actually not help us become the saints we are called to be. He might then ask us to wait or He might offer us something that will be better for us instead. This is especially true when it comes to praying about our vocations. Sometimes our Lord might ask us to be patient and wait for a while before He makes His Will known to us. This is meant not to hurt us, but to help us grow in trust and humility before God. Let us continue to persevere in our prayers and petitions to God our Heavenly Father. It is in doing so that we will be very pleasing to Him and we will be opening ourselves to the great gifts that our Father has for us.
