WHAT ARE THE AIMS OF TRANSITION YEAR?
• Transition Year should offer students space to learn, mature and develop in the absence of examination pressure.
• To reinforce what has been learned at Junior Cycle and to ensure that basic competencies are further developed.
• Orientation to adult and working life through work experience, enterprise education and community service.
• Education for maturity.
WHAT OTHER AIMS DOES TRANSITION YEAR HAVE?
• Life Skills.
• Social Awareness.
• Increased Social Competence.
• Promotion of learning beyond the classroom by linking the school with a variety of social agencies, particularly the local community and employers.

• Irish - consists mostly of Aural and Oral Irish activities.
• English - focuses on the creative side of the Leaving Cert Paper 1.
• Maths - learning the Project Maths for Leaving Cert.

• Business Studies - focuses mainly on the Young Entrepreneur.

ASSESSMENT
• Students have to prepare and present projects in their academic subjects.
• Students are individually interviewed by a panel of teachers at the end of the year where they are expected to outline their work and commitment during the year.
• Students are awarded on overall grade for the year.
WORK EXPERIENCE
• Two Sessions of Work Experience
• Two weeks before the Mid Term Break in October
• Two weeks after the Mid Term Break in February
• Your son should obtain this experience placement himself
• Students find this invaluable
• It should be something he is interested in, not just convenient

HOW MUCH DOES ECDL COST?
• Total cost for ECDL is €130.
• The fee includes the cost of one test per module.
• On receipt of payment the students are given a course CD which they can use at home to practice for each module.

PARENTS CAN HELP AND SUPPORT
• Encourage your son to make the most of the Transition Year Programme.
• Demonstrate as much interest in school activities as in other years.
• Encourage your son to be an active, not passive, participant in TY.
• Attendance is very important.
• Be prepared to have a student who will not have “traditional homework.”
• If you have expertise in any area, would you consider offering your services to the TY programme?

OTHER THINGS TO DO IN TY
• Besides all the activities in TY they are other activities that can be done.
• For example Conor Drennan became the photographer for this year.
• And Paul Healy and Joey Walsh took charge of the fashion show for St. Kieran’s College and lined the pitches for all the matches.
• Other things that can be done include: Cois Nore, the Orc project and other charity activities.
TRANSITION YEAR
• If you or your son think it is a year off then it will become one.
• What you put into it, you get out of it.
• You have to move out of your comfort zone.
• It is not the Junior Cert, it is way more important than that.
