Message from Our Principal Throughout the season of Advent, St. Justin School students are focused on preparing for the birth of Jesus by giving to those in need. During the weeks of Advent, our students host a daily prayer service (Advent Novena) and collect items for Community Ministry. For each day of the nine-day Novena, students collected specific items: new coasts and jackets, socks, blankets and sleeping bags, games, scarves, hats, gloves, toiletries, toys and books. The novena concludes with the Kindergarten class reenactment of the Nativity story.

It is a blessing to be a part of this Catholic elementary school every day, but especially during the Christmas season. Children have such joy and enthusiasm for Jesus’ birth. As adults we strive to have that same child-like faith and exuberance to serve others.

Today we celebrate the Feast of the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph, we celebrate Mary and Joseph’s trust in God. During this time, Pope Francis has asked us (Amoris Laetitia, no. 318) to act:

“A few minutes can be found each day to come together before the living God, to tell Him our worries, to ask for the needs of our family, to pray for someone experiencing difficulty, to ask for help in showing love, to give thanks for life and for its blessings, and to ask Our Lady to protect us beneath her maternal mantle.”

The Holy Father’s request, is one that I hope, and pray, becomes our theme for 2018. I pray that we follow in the example of Mary and Joseph, and trust God in all things. That we take the time to pray for

the needs of our family and our community. We give thanks that our St. Justin community is focused on serving those in need (especially Joe Bauer, Nancy Uyeda, and all the volunteers in our St. Justin Community Ministry program).

Ongoing Faith Formation Program Classes for Pre-K3 through 1st Grade: 9:00 -10:00am. 2nd Grade through 8th Grade: 10:15-11:30am

Did You Know We Have a Program for Your 3 and 4-year olds?

We offer an Early Childhood Program during the 9 a.m. Mass, from Fall until April. Our three and four-year old classes still has plenty of room. Feel free to drop by ANY Sunday to see if it might be a good fit

for your child. You may obtain registration forms in room 2 or download them from our parish website.

Sacramental Preparation Program A gentle reminder to all who have not completed their registration and paid their fees, please do so. Letter for First Eucharist Mass selection will be not be mailed until registration is complete.

High School Confirmation Program There is no session today. We will resume on Sunday, January 7th. RCIA (adapted for children) Sunday, December 31st Attend Mass with Family, No Dismissal

CLOW (Children’s Liturgy of the Word) During the 9 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. Sunday Masses, children are dismissed to the Parish Ministry Center Chapel for an age appropriate Liturgy of the Word. The children return to church during the Presentation of the Gifts.

(Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults)

Our next meeting is Tuesday, January 9th at 7:00-8:30pm in

the PMC. Come with any questions that you may have about faith, religion, and the

Catholic Church. This program is for adults who are seeking baptism, or were baptized

Catholic but have not celebrated the sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist. This is a process marked by liturgical rites that are celebrated with the community. This process is centered on the Sunday readings and includes

attending Mass. For those who are spiritually prepared, they will

receive the Sacraments of Initiation, (Baptism,

Confirmation, and Eucharist) during the Easter Vigil.

Baptism of School-Age Children If your child is seven years or older and unbaptized, we provide the Rite of Christian Initiation adapted for children. Please email Mary Kane at [email protected] for more information.

Christmas Food & Gift Project Two weeks ago we distributed Christmas food and gifts to all the families requesting our assistance. While I do not have the final total of the number of people we served, I can guarantee you that all those who came to us appreciated what we were able to provide for them. Thank you for your continued support and Happy New Year!

Outreach Dinner Our next Outreach Dinner will be taking place on Sunday, January 7. It will begin at 1:30 p.m. in our Parish Small Hall. All Senior Citizen members of our Parish are invited, along with a guest, to this meal followed by BINGO

Financial Assistance for Parishioners St. Justin Community Ministry has set aside some funds to provide Parishioners with limited Financial Assistance when facing unexpected issues. If you find yourself in need, contact Joe Bauer at 408-296-1193 extension 109 or [email protected]

Food & Diaper Collection Most of you are aware of the Community Ministry Collection Barrels that are located in our Church. During the month of January, we will continue to request canned Soup, Pork & Beans, Chili, Macaroni & Cheese and Tomato Sauce. We are also in need of Baby Food (Fruits and Vegetables) as well as Baby Diapers (Size 4 – 5). These are items that we do not receive often from the Second Harvest Food Bank. Please feel free to drop donations in the barrels in the Church, the barrel in the Foyer of the School or bring items to the Parish Office.

Fresh Fruit and Vegetables Needed For those of you who have back yard fruit trees with an over abundance of fruit and/or gardens with vegetables please consider donating what you can to Community Ministry. The fruit and vegetables are a welcome addition to the food that we distribute to those seeking assistance.

COMMUNITY MINISTRY TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION There’s no more unusual setting to celebrate today’s Feast of the Holy Family than Barcelona, Spain and the towering unfinished sandcastle known officially as the Temple Expiatori de la Sagrada Familia. In 1882, the plan was hatched to build a vast place of worship in reparation for the revolutionary and liberal leanings of the city. The modern artist Antoni Gaudi dedicated his life to the project, living in the building, attending Mass daily, and giving up his personal wealth. When people pressed him to pick up the pace, he responded, “My client is not in a hurry.” (Gaudi’s cause for beatification is moving along, and he could be the first professional artist and architect to be beatified.) The Spanish Civil War, a disaster for the Catholic Church in which thousands of priests, brothers, and nuns were murdered, halted work in 1935. In the 1950s work began anew, speeded up by computers in the 1980s. Still, the final stage of construction is not due to end until 2026. If the original methods had stayed in place, it would take several hundred more years to complete the plan. So far there are eight towers, with four to go. The highest steeple is three feet shorter than the nearest hill, since the architect didn’t want his work to surpass God’s artistry. The three faces of the basilica each have three doors, with the faces named Passion, Nativity, and Grace. The interior is crammed with geometric figures that almost seem to spin, crazy-quilt windows, spiral staircases, and jumbles of statues and figures. Although inspired by ancient Gothic cathedrals, the style is called Expressionist, and very little is left unexpressed by the masonry. MIGRANTS & REFUGEES: MEN AND WOMEN IN SEARCH OF PEACE How can you turn a “contemplative gaze” toward our migrant and refugee brothers and sisters? Building on his September launch of the “Share the Journey” campaign in support of migrants and refugees, Pope Francis’ Message for the 51st World Day of Peace (Jan. 1) invites Catholics to embrace those who endure perilous journeys and hardships in order to find peace. He urges people of faith to turn with a “contemplative gaze” towards migrants and refugees, opening our hearts to the “gaze of faith which sees God dwelling in their houses, in their streets and squares.” In his Message, Pope Francis echoes St. John Paul II and Pope Benedict XVI, pointing to war, conflict, genocide, ethnic cleansing, poverty, lack of opportunity, and environmental degradation as reasons that families and individuals become refugees and migrants.

Four “mileposts for action” are necessary in order to allow migrants, refugees, asylum seekers, and trafficking victims the opportunity to find peace. These include: 1) Welcoming, which calls for “expanding legal pathways for entry” and better balancing national security and fundamental human rights concerns; 2) Protecting, or recognizing and defending “the inviolable dignity of those who flee”; 3) Promoting, which entails “supporting the integral human development of migrants and refugees”; and 4) Integrating by allowing migrants and refugees to “participate fully in the life of society that welcomes them.” Doing so enriches both those arriving and those welcoming. -CRS, Catholics Confront Global Poverty Pope Francis’ message is the most recent in a long history of messages for the World Day of Peace beginning with Pope Paul VI in 1968. Diocesan Wedding Anniversary Celebration

Bishop Patrick J. McGrath would like to invite all couples who are celebrating their 1st-5th, 25th, 40th and 50th + Wedding Anniversaries in 2017 to participate in our Annual Wedding Anniversary Mass on February 3 at 2:00 p.m. at the Cathedral Basilica of Saint Joseph.

The couples will be invited to renew their wedding vows and will receive a blessing from Bishop Patrick McGrath who will preside over the celebration. Each couple will also receive a certificate signed by the Bishop. A short reception will follow.
