For a short week there certainly appeared to be a lot happening around the school! As you browse
through the newsletter this week you will get a sense of the “extra-curricular” activities that happen
across schools and we didn’t even have room this week to mention STEM, choir, band, guitar, netball
coaching, Companions in the Faith, UNSW ICAS competitions and Year 6 Religious Education test that
all happened as well as the featured activities on the following pages!
Teachers this week are also finalising reports, which will go out to parents next Thursday due to
the high number of students attending the Zone Athletics Carnival on Friday. All parents are expected
to attend an interview with their teacher/s during the last week of term (except Year 2, whose
interviews are next week). This is an important part of the reporting process and is useful in clarifying
information contained in the report or for discussing any other issues raised by the parent or teacher. A
note will go home early next week with instructions on how to book your interview online.
It was a miserable week weatherwise, and unfortunately there were not enough parents to hold
the planned Fundraising Meeting on Tuesday night. At this stage, our Fete, which was to be held in
November, looks like being cancelled as our volunteer coordinator is no longer in a position to take on
this event. If you are interested in taking over and rescuing this favourite night for students please
let us know in the office.
This weekend we have two major events. First Communion is Sunday morning at 9am at St
Peter the Fisherman Church and we wish all our candidates all the best for this very special day. Photos
and a report will appear in next week’s newsletter. On Saturday night we have our first disco for the
year at the LUSC. Please see the ad in this newsletter. This is a P&F function and parents are needed to
help on the night so please make yourself known to Bronnie Burke if you can assist (Ph. 0414 939 506).
We hope we get a good turnout for both events from our school community.
Year 5 presented our prayer at assembly this week and had some great information about various
organisations that help the more needy members of our society. It was a good reminder for all of us to
be generous in supporting those who have so little, especially during the winter months. Our students
(and families) have been really supportive of local needs in recent weeks and will present a very large
bundle of goodies to St Vinnies at assembly on Monday morning as part of their winter appeal. I have
included a couple of key messages below from Year 5’s presentation. Regards, David Hughes. Principal.

DEBATING COMPETITION… On Tuesday, our Debating teams competed against St Agnes’, Port
Macquarie in their first round of the Inter-school Debating
Competition. The topic for the debate was “Internet, more harm
than good”. Our Affirmative Team, consisting of Isabel Krige,
Mackenzi Dietrich, Emma Wheeler and Bill Harris debated against
the Negative Team from St Agnes’ here at Laurieton. Thank you to
Noah Streeter for doing a wonderful job as Chairperson and Zarla
McDonald for being an efficient Timekeeper. Our Negative team,
consisting of Calum Aldridge, Piper Facer, Oscar Hoad, Molly Kirk
and McKeeley Quayle travelled to St Agnes’ to debate against their
Affirmative Team. We congratulate the teams from St Agnes who
were successful in winning both debates. The debate was a
valuable learning experience which highlighted both the children’s
strengths and the skills they need to work on. The children from St
Joseph’s are to be commended for their wonderful efforts both in
their thorough preparation and for their performance at the
debates. Special thanks also to Tom Critchley for adjudicating. It
has been wonderful to see the improvement in the children’s
speaking skills, their growth in confidence and their ability to work
as part of a team. We are now working hard on developing our
skills for our next debate in a few weeks’ time, when we will argue
for and against “Superman, Wonder Woman, Batman and
Catwoman – super heroes or misleading idols?”

Blake Ellis recently travelled to Sydney to compete in the Goshin Ryu Australian National Championships. Blake represented his club Mid North Coast Karate located at Kew and competed against students from across the country. Blakes's hard work and dedication to training paid off with 1st place in the 10yrs Kata, 2nd place in 10yrs Sparring and was part of the Mid North Coast sparring team who placed 3rd in the team event. Congratulations Blake!

Right: Over the past few weeks the children who come to sewing club with Magda on Mondays and Tuesdays worked on a collaborative project called `The Sewing Circle`. The children involved ranged from Year 1 students, all the way up to Year 6 kids. Each student involved designed and carefully hand-stitched at least one of the multi-coloured felt circles which have been then adorned with buttons and joined together to create a decorative wall hanging. It will be put on display at the school and the sewing club children hope their textile artwork will help brighten up the day for staff, students and
visitors to our school.
CYBERSMART TALK We had a very interesting talk from Senior Constable Wendy Hudson on Wednesday about internet use, stealing and domestic violence. She spoke to all most classes but of course at different levels. Senior Constable Wendy works extensively with the youth so she spoke from the experiences she has had and the main issues she finds she is dealing with in our local community. One of the most important messages that she told the children is that the legal age for social media apps like Instagram, Snapchat and Facebook is 13 years old. She also stressed that if young children and even teenagers do use these apps, they should show their parents everything that they are posting, whether it is pictures or messages. Parent approval ensures appropriate usage of social media and keeps parents in the loop about what their child is actually sharing on social media. If your child is using social media, this is the perfect opportunity to have a discussion with them. For any parents interested, we have fact sheets in the office on the following topics: Cyberbullying; Cyber Safety top ten tips for youth; Instagram; Snapchat; KIK Messenger; and Managing your Reputation.
