Most Holy Mother of God, save us! 'O Mary, you are the sacred dwelling of the Lord, raise us fallen into a bottomless pit of despair, wrongdoing and affliction;; for you are the salvation and help and powerful advocate for those who have sinned, and save your servants.' We can become too familiar with something that we take it for granted or we no longer hear or understand what was said. Our prayers are repetitive;; 'Lord, have mercy!' or when we hear the Triasaghion-Holy God intoned, we instinctively cross ourselves. During the Divine Liturgy and other liturgical services we hear;; 'Through the prayers of the Mother of God, O Savior save us.', and "Most Holy Mother of God, save us.' How can Mary, the Mother of Jesus save us? To ask the Mother of God to save us is an ancient revered Christian custom. The oldest Marian prayer dates back to the 3rd century - 'We fly to your patronage, O Virgin Mother of God. Do not despise our petitions in our necessities;; but deliver us from all danger. O Most Pure and Blessed One!' The Slavs would later add;; "O Most Holy God-Bearer (Mother of God), save us'. The prayer-We fly to you patronage-dates from 3rd century Egypt, and that the faithful turned directly to Mary for protection and her intercession, realizing that she is close to their suffering and thereby recognize her power of intercession. We do not refer to nor call Mary our redeemer. Jesus Christ is our Lord, God and Redeemer. We ask the Mother of God to intercede for us through her prayers for our salvation from perils and sin. We ask her to save us from those things that impede us from our salvation in Christ. The word 'save', which we refer to the Mother of God, is found in Sacred Scripture. In the Acts of the Apostles (2;; 40) St Peter exclaims;; "Save yourselves from this corrupt generation." In 1 Cor. 1;; 21 we read that it pleased God through the foolishness of preaching to save them who believe. We also find in Romans 11;; 14 that St. Paul, speaking to the Jews, says that he hopes by his example to save some of them. Needless to say, we cannot save ourselves. We need Christ to be saved. As in our prayers to the Mother of God, we are using the word 'save' in a special way, which in no way compromises our belief that Christ alone save and redeems our souls. 'Deliver us from peril, O Mother of Christ our God. You are the one who gave birth to the Creator of all. Now we all cry to you: Rejoice only mediatrix of our souls.'
