The P.E. department has
achieved tremendous success in recent
sporting events. All of the staff mem-
bers of our Physical Education Depart-
ment deserve special credit and praise
for their outstanding success this year.
We would like to give a special men-
tion to the 1st Form boys football
team for winning the final of the Enfield
Borough All Schools 5-a-Side football
tournament therefore crowned as
Champions of all schools in Enfield.
Well done to the following play-
ers:

emotion which swept the field—players and spectators
alike. St. John’s P.E. teacher Miss Foley had excelled in
training and inspiring her girls and was justifiably proud of
them. At the end of the final Latymer was most gal-
lant in offering their congratulations as was St. John’s in
their response. A great day for sportsmanship!
This story was also featured recently in the
Enfield Independent newspaper.
Thursday, 14th March saw a truly
dramatic end to the Third Form borough’s end
of season tournament in which ten schools
took part in the hope of winning the coveted
title.
St. John’s won all its group stages and
went into the semi-finals to take on an equally
fine team - Bishops Stopford. At the final
whistle, the score was 3-3 and so they moved
into extra time. However, the dogged deter-
mination by both teams to win resulted in a
draw. Now, with unbearable tension in the air
the game entered the ‘golden goal’ stage. In-
stant victory to whoever scores the first goal -
and...the golden goal went to St. John’s.
A short break and into the finals: St.
John’s Vs Latymer School. At half time St.
John’s was losing to Latymer: 4 - 1. It certainly
looked as if Latymer had won and, understand-
ably, they and their supporters were full of excited anticipation. IN THE LAST MINUTE
of the second half St. John’s mustered all its
collective strength and scored...and then
scored yet again to take the winning title on a
score of 4 - 5 to St. John’s.
Both semi-finals and finals were
games to remember as was the level of

Monday, 26th March saw various selected pupils represent
St. John’s in The Lea Valley Schools Swimming Gala. We entered as a
guest school kindly invited by John Warner School in Hertfordshire.
All pupils performed well with excellent results in some of the 50m
individual races, which included 1st to 3rd place positions by Harry
Cox, Bethany Jamieson, Megan Jones, Phoebe O’Beirne and Hassan
Aknar. Well done to all pupils who took part!
St. John’s recently entered trials for a mini marathon
competition. The trials were held at Lee Valley Athletics track on
Sunday 11th March. St. John’s pupils were selected for the trials
based on their cross county performances and their overall fitness.
The trial was 2.8 miles long, pupils should be commended for their
effort and for competing in a tough challenge as many Enfield and
Haringey athletics club runners attended.
Runners who are selected from the trials will be invited
to run in a children's marathon on the day of the London Mara-
thon.

Skiing in Morzine In January, some 1st Form pupils along
with some of the Prep School pupils went to
Morzine to Ski in the French Alps.
The pupils had an excellent week skiing!
The week was filled with fun, laughter, falling over,
getting up, eating a variety of luxurious foods,
swimming, relaxing in the sauna and Jacuzzi, shop-
ping in the local village and watching the ski in-
structors evening ski show, which covered the
history of skiing and finished with a superb torch
light decent. As you can see it was a very busy
week.
The pupils worked hard throughout the
days during their skiing sessions, carrying out ac-
tivities including: snow ploughs, parallel stops and
turns, slaloms, skiing backwards, jumps, speed
skiing and off piste skiing. All pupils were working
towards different levels and at the end of the
week took part in an awards ceremony where the
ski instructors gave out the badges and booklets. Well done!

Girls Hockey Girls Football
This season the girls hockey squads have been training hard dur-
ing their weekly lunch training sessions to enable St. John’s to progress in a
variety of competitive girls sports, not just netball.
St. John’s has a 1st Form team and a mixed 2nd/3rd Form team,
both teams have been working on developing their passing and dribbling
skills, rules of the game, attack and defensive penalty short corners and
Zenab Ahsan and Kate Chan have been working on their goal keeping
skills.
Both teams won their first games of the season, convincingly
putting on a better performance than the opposition. The hockey season
has now come to an end, but will continue in September.
In G.C.S.E P.E. this year the 5th Form pupils have been assessed in a
variety of sports including: Gaelic football, karate, boxing, football, swimming, hill
walking, resistance training, personal survival, rounders, horse riding, netball,
dance and skiing. Our aim is to provide the opportunity for all pupils to maxim-
ise their potential and achieve as high a grade as possible in the overall course. I
am sure at times the pupils have not enjoyed the resistance training fitness cir-
cuits but every pupil has gained a high grade for their efforts. Well done and
good luck in your exam this year. Remember revision cuts out the need for
luck!

St. John’s has a girls’ lunchtime football club, which is
for fun, to develop football skills and to help increase fitness.
The girls were keen to play some friendly fixtures against local
schools so we organised a team to play state and independent
teams. The girls are all very much beginners at football and they
do not cover football in lessons or play for clubs outside of
school, so being brave enough to take on the challenge of play-
ing other schools is an achievement in itself. The girls battled
hard during their games, with Laura Bird and Zenab Ahsan scor-
ing some excellent goals for St. John’s.

Outdoor Pursuits
I have enjoyed mountain
biking this term as the instructors
have made it very enjoyable. They
have been patient, funny and made
it easy to pick up the basics
needed to carry the sport further.
I have has a lot of fun and been
motivated to take up biking! Ryan Boroughs (1 Green)
Various pupils have been going to Harlow Outdoor
Pursuits Centre during their Tuesday or Thursday games
afternoons this term, to take on the adventures of rock climb-
ing, canoeing and mountain biking.
For the first few weeks we did rock climbing, our
instructor taught us how to fit and work all or safety equip-
ment. We were all eager to climb up the wall after seeing the
excellent facilities. After the first person climbed up we real-
ised it was not as easy as we thought it would be, however,
eventually we did succeed better. Each week during rock
climbing we learnt new things and faced harder challenges; my
group found this a thrilling experience and would love to do it
again.
After climbing we moved onto canoeing; we worked
on how to move and navigate our way around the very cold
canal.
The last activity was mountain biking,. Thankfully it
was warmer weather now. During our biking we were taught
how to ride up and down hills and changing gears.
Over the term we have learnt new things and had new experiences, whilst having lots of fun. I would love to
have a thrilling experience like this again!

Sports fixtures will take priority over sports clubs.
All pupils are welcome to attend lunchtime clubs, regardless whether they are in the school teams.
Girls tennis squad training will take place at various prep times with Miss Foley when there are no girls fixtures on.
We recommend pupils 1st—4th Form attend extra curricular athletics training for extra sports day preparation.

Study leave
On the 27th & 29th March, every single pupil from 1st to 4th Form competed in the
St. John’s Mini Olympics.
All the events were individual challenges. The girls had a choice of swimming, rowing/cycling,
badminton or trampolining. The boys had a choice of squash, table tennis, rowing/cycling, or
badminton.
The pupils competed to earn their house points and, perhaps more importantly, a gold medal
and the bragging rights of being champion in their event!
Medals are to be awarded in assembly after the Easter break. Results will be in the summer
term P.E. Newsletter!
