Heartbeats from your priest Fr Eduardo
The gospel this Sunday is the centre-piece of Mark’s gospel. To this point people have been asking ―Who is this?‖ People have been giving different answers, but Jesus’ disciples have been remarkably quiet. Jesus challenged them: “you have eyes - can’t you see? You have ears - can’t you hear? Are your minds so closed?” (Mark 8:18) At last Peter speaks out: “You are the Messiah”. The Apostles were finding it difficult to accept Jesus’ teaching that the Messiah would have to suffer, die and
then rise again. Jesus tells his disciples that this is the way redemption would take place. Jesus will embrace the cross; and the road to rising will be through dying. Jesus further teaches his Apostles (and us) that those wishing to follow Him to eter-nal life must take up their cross and follow. Everyone has a cross (Christians, non-Christians, the wealthy, the impoverished, the learned, celebrities, etc), and if we want to follow Jesus we take up the cross in our personal life. Jesus taught us that we come to the Father’s glory not by going out of this world but through it, not by avoiding our cross but by embracing it. The Cross is proudly displayed above our churches and has a place of honour. Do we really understand what that means? Does the Cross feature prominently in our view of life? Jesus did not promise a rose garden but blood, sweat and tears. He promises the cross; but through it (not by avoiding it) he promises true life. What is your attitude to the crosses you have been sent?
