SHARING OUR GRATITUDE

We are happy that you have joined us today and

want you to know that you are always welcome

here. We invite you to participate in any of our

parish activities and ministries at the level you

desire. We all have different but valuable gifts and

talents that we can use to serve God

and each other.

W E L C O M E

What do You Steward? I talk and write a lot about stewardship. The word “steward” is both a noun and a verb. As a noun it refers to a person

who manages another’s property or is tasked with providing food and drink for others. As a verb it is the act of managing or providing. Although the word seems to be common enough that we use it to refer to the people you see working on an airplane, it still seems to be a difficult concept to teach and to put into practice.

But like any other endeavor that is worthy of our pursuit, being a good steward, managing the property of another or providing for others, takes practice and intentionality. If you want to learn to play the piano, you will invest the time and money and effort to learn. If you want to open a small business you do the same. If you want to go to Heaven, you have to steward your life and material goods responsibly. No one accidentally or with little effort excels at a sport or sets up a good retirement plan: these things require planning and long-term discipline.

I have tried to inculcate this value as Pastor of St. Hedwig parish now going on five years. Each year we have a weekend when I preach at all the Masses and ask you, individually and as a couple or family, to do that kind of intentional planning, to be purposeful about what you can and should do with your time, talent, faith, and treasure for your own good and for the good of the Church. I hope you will be prepared for this exercise next weekend!

Again, by accident we are not good stewards: we may give a little or be inconsistent with our promises, or maybe we do nothing more than occasionally come to Mass. A couple of weeks ago Jesus told a parable of a man who entered a wedding party not properly dressed

and was thrown out. I explained that for God, it’s not enough that we just “show up,” or as some say to me, “Father, just be happy people are here—don’t make demands.” Showing up is a basic first step, but the goal is communal worship (not going through the motions), increased prayer (not inconsistent daily communications with the Beloved), and an ever-growing use of our time, talent, and treasure for the common good of the Church and your parish (not giving leftovers in an unplanned and haphazard manner). The man was thrown out because his lack of intentionality was an insult to the whole reason for the party—why would we consider Church membership as am optional or occasional activity, when it is the beginning of our citizenship in Heaven?

When you look at your budget for charity, what do you see? If you’ve been giving the same amount for years, it’s time to increase it (a dollar doesn’t buy what it used to in 1980), even just 1%. If your prayer life has not changed in years, it’s time to increase it. If you haven’t been involved in parish life and ministry in any capacity, or have been doing the same thing for a long time, it’s time to make a change. Keeping things fresh, making adjustments to life and faith and commitment is always necessary.

Perhaps you received your commitment from last year in the mail. I hope you read it and consider what you can do to improve it for this year. Parish life is heavily dependent on your time and dependent on your charitable and sacrificial gifts. If what you give to your parish doesn’t cost you something, chances are you’re not giving enough for it to be a sacrifice. It has to be more than a tip—it has to reflect a gratitude for all God has shared with you. He shared it so that you might share it in return, not hoard it or spend it frivolously or unthinkingly, especially when there are so many needs and so many in need.
