NEWSLETTER 23/2016 29 JULY 2016
Dear Parents and Friends of St Clare’s
You will see from our photos that our visitors from Japan have arrived and are enjoying the
hospitality of their host families and our school.
The Japanese teachers, Hamamura Sensei and Matsuoka Sensei, and
the students were introduced to the school community at a full school
assembly last Tuesday. It is Matsuoka’s first trip to the country;
however, Humamura has been part of the exchange program for many
years and has led four groups of students to Australia over a 25 year
period.
Students and teachers from both schools gain great insights into the
culturess of Japan and Australia and learn to see people as individuals
rather than stereotypes. It has been wonderful to see the young people
coming to learn and have fun together.

Last week I wrote a little regarding the HSC cohort and their upcoming HSC exams. A little
further into the newsletter you will find reference to HSC student, Lucy McIntosh, who has
received an early entry offer to the Bachelor of Law at Macquarie University. We congratulate
Lucy on achieving this opportunity, which is based on a commitment to study and great
community leadership. We hope that Lucy’s experience will prompt other members of her
cohort to apply for early entry at their university of choice.
Our students continue to be ‘out and about’ serving the community and gaining in life skills
whilst pursuing the educational curriculum. There are some great photos of our students
gaining some limited, but very significant learning about being wheelchair dependent and the
difficulties of navigating through a day without the use of their legs. Our hospitality students
continue to learn “on the job” and the Year 10 community fundraising for St Vincent de Paul
brought students, parents and staff together to work for a worthy cause.
Last Tuesday, the NSW Minister for Education, Adrian Piccoli announced a series of reforms
for the HSC. The reforms are significant and will require careful consideration and planning
within schools over the next few years.
The following statement is from the Board of Studies, Teaching and Educational Standards
NSW (BOSTES) regarding Stronger HSC Standards:
The reforms include:
establishing a minimum literacy and numeracy standard from 2020. Students in Year 9
from 2017 will be able to meet the standard by achieving Band 8 in NAPLAN in reading,
writing and numeracy. From 2018, an online literacy and numeracy test will be available
for students to demonstrate they have met the standard
establishing a regular review cycle of syllabuses provided online. Syllabuses will provide
more opportunities for students to master knowledge and skills
new courses, starting with a Science Extension course for Year 12 from 2019
introducing rigorous guidelines for effective school-based assessment that focuses on the
application of knowledge and skills, and reduces student stress by capping the number of
tasks
redesign HSC exam questions to assess depth of knowledge and application of skills
apply a common scale for maths, to encourage students to study the maths course best
suited to their level of ability.
God Bless

FROM THE SENIOR SCHOOL: Last Friday, at our Year Meeting, we were reminded about
the importance of Year 11 work. Too many times I have heard students state that “they don’t
have to worry about Year 11 work as it doesn’t count” or “Year 11 doesn’t matter”.
Year 11 marks don’t count towards the HSC marks but Year 11 certainly does “count” for
many things. Obviously the patterns you set in Year 11 will stand you in good stead for Year
12. That simply goes without saying.
Year 11 work is the foundation on which Year 12 work is based, and in some instances the
HSC examines a percentage of the work that you do in your Preliminary (Year 11) Course.
You need to have as good an understanding as possible in order to do well in Year 12.
In 2018, if you are considering going to university and would like to get early entry, one of the
avenues is through school recommendation. At least 10 Australian universities run this scheme.
They require a copy of your Preliminary report to be submitted along with school
recommendation from the principal and/or subject teachers. This report therefore needs to be
the best that it can be.
This can help relieve the stress of the HSC so Year 11 certainly does count!
I am also aware that there are some students who are going to “drop” a subject at the end of the
Preliminary Course. It is imperative that students complete all work for all of their courses
until this change actually occurs. If students receive too many “N” letters then they will not be
able to progress to Year 12 until they have satisfactorily completed Year 11. Students need to
satisfactorily complete all their subjects.
An “N” letter can be given for failure to submit a task, and another one for subsequent failure to
submit on reset dates. An “N” letter can also be given for “plagiarism” where a student fails to
reference work, or copies another students work. Students now have access to “Turnitin”
which, when used by the students, can help them with this.
While it is great to help each other and we encourage you to do this, you must not let anyone
copy your work for tasks. The rules state that all students involved will receive “0” if this
occurs.
On a brighter note it was wonderful to be able to acknowledge two of our students who have
excelled in the sporting arena this year. Congratulations again to Sam Mudford (Cross
Country and Hockey) and to Jesse Wilkes (Swimming) for their respective achievements.
Sam Mudford Jesse Wilkes Sarah Ward
Sarah Ward is also to be congratulated for her progression to the next level of the Rotary Club
National Youth Science Forum.
Congratulations also to all the award recipients for the Mid-Year Preliminary Course. It has
been great to see such a range of students recognised for their achievements at this stage of their
schooling.
The process has begun for the election of Senior Leaders (including Captains and Vice
Captains) for 2017. These 12 positions actually begin next term when Year 11 begin their
HSC work. 32 students collected an information pack last week and there is a great deal of
potential among these young people. The nomination forms are due back to Mrs Anne
Harvard in the office by the end of Friday, 29 July 2016. I look forward to reading through
these.
As our Year 11 students begin to obtain their “P” Plates it is important that I remind everyone
of the school rules regarding driving. At no stage is a student allowed to get into another
student’s car during school hours, to drive anywhere, without written permission from all sets
of parents and the school. There are set permission forms which have to be filled out. I am
confident that all parents and guardians would be appreciative of this rule and the importance of
enforcing it very stringently.
If parents or siblings wish to deliver food to students during recess or lunch breaks this must be
done via the front office, not the back or side gates please. This is also a school rule for the
protection of students. Also, we need to be respectful of Mrs Kingsford in the canteen.
Our Yearly Exams begin on Monday, 5 September and it is important that students are
adequately prepared. I have spoken to several students regarding study timetables and am
happy to help anyone who would like some assistance.
It is wonderful to see so many students helping each other in various areas and on Friday, 12
August we have our St Clare’s Feast Day where each PC class runs an activity to raise money
for our nominated cause. So far there are some excellent ideas from Year 11. We are a Year
Group to be reckoned with!
To finish this week I would like to remind Year 11 students of our Year Group Motto:
“The strength of the team is each individual member.
The strength of each member is the team.”
You are all Superheroes in your own way. Both individually and together you have the ability
to make a very positive difference in our world. It all starts today.
Karen McCann, Year 11 Student Coordinator
CAREERS CORNER: This week’s article refers to the Educational Access Schemes (EAS)
for 2016 Year 12 HSC students.
EAS applications for 2016–17 open on Wednesday, 3 August 2016
Information about 2016–17 admissions will be available on this website
http://www.uac.edu.au/eas/ from late July. The current on-line information refers to 2015
graduates but is a guide to what will be available for 2016
EAS can help students who have experienced long-term educational disadvantage gain
admission to university.
To be eligible for EAS consideration your educational performance must have been seriously
affected, normally for a period of at least six months during Year 11 and/or 12 or equivalent,
due to circumstances beyond your control and choosing.
You can read about the seven broad categories of long-term educational disadvantage in the
EAS FAQ or by reading the 'Types of disadvantage' table in the 2015–16 EAS booklet.
Who can apply for EAS?
You can apply for EAS through UAC if you:
are a UAC applicant for undergraduate admission
able to demonstrate that you have experienced long-term educational disadvantage as a
result of circumstances beyond your control or choosing.
The areas considered under this scheme are:
Disrupted schooling
Financial hardship
Home environment and responsibilities
Severe family disruption
Excessive family responsibilities
Abuse of applicant, parents, or sisters/brothers
English language difficulty
Personal illness/Disability
Refugee status
School environment
Distance education (i.e. daily travel > 100 km in a straight line from home to school)
A number of current Year 12 students have contacted either the Year 12 Student Coordinator,
Bronwen Davidson, or Careers Adviser, Ian Evans, regarding EAS.
How can EAS help?
Institutions use EAS to make offers of admission in one of two ways. They:
allocate bonus points or
set aside a certain number of places for EAS applicants.
If you are allocated bonus points your selection rank for a particular course will change. Your
ATAR won't change.
On completion of the upcoming Trial HSC Examinations (1 August – 15 August inclusive),
students wishing to formalise their EAS application should make an appointment with Mrs
Davidson or Mr Evans.
MACQUARIE UNIVERSITY EARLY ENTRY OFFER: Year 12
student, and current Senior Leadership Team member, Lucy McIntosh is to
be congratulated on her offer of admission to the 2017 Global Leadership
Entry Program under the Bachelor of Laws at Macquarie University.
Through her involvement in, and commitment to, multiple school and
wider community issues, Lucy has demonstrated an aptitude and a desire
for leadership and community engagement that aligns with Macquarie
University values in such a manner as to qualify for this early entry offer.
The Global Leadership Entry Program gives Lucy privileges and allows her to get a head start
on the program by participating in a suite of activities while still in Year 12, including access
to:
world-class library and Wi-Fi while on campus
Colloquium Series of workshops focusing on international issues and professional skills
speaker events from innovative pioneering leaders
enjoy the opportunity to network with current and future students.
Lucy is also to be commended for her pro-active research wherein she identified this program
and for her thorough application.
Although we are in the Trial HSC Examination period, all Year 12 students should be mindful
that there are many offers such as this for which applications can be made.
Ian Evans, Careers Adviser
YEAR 11 SOCIAL JUSTICE IMMERSION TO SYDNEY: This coming Sunday a group
of 15 of our Year 11 students and 3 members of staff will be participating in a Social Justice
Immersion trip to Sydney. This trip will be similar in nature to our previous successful Year 12
trip in April. In conjunction with the Salvation Army Street Level Mission the students will be
involved in a two day program that allows them to engage with people who will broaden their
perception of what it is like to be marginalised. On our way to Sydney we will also drop in and
spend some time with our friends from Penola House in Newcastle, who advocate for and
support refugees. A visit to Vinnies Ozanam Industries is also planned.
It is hoped that our group will be challenged and inspired to assimilate some features of the trip
into our own community, and importantly they will gain an appreciation of the everyday
struggles for many who live homeless or experience any form of isolation.
The students have already spent an afternoon together to prepare for all the marvellous
encounters they will experience, particularly from a spiritual perspective.
They are an impressive group, eager to face the challenges of our few days away.

TAREE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE BUSINESS AWARDS FUNCTION: On Friday, 1
July, five St Clare’s Hospitality students (Clayton Wisemantel, Ashley Tiedeman, Miranda
Bell, Tayla Mullen and Abbey Henry), Mrs McFarlane and Mrs McCann worked at the
Taree Chamber of Commerce Business Awards Function at the Racecourse Function Centre as
part of Work Placement for Hospitality.
We arrived at 5:45 pm to help set up and familiarise ourselves with the procedure for the night.
We were going to be waiting on tables, helping plate some of the dishes and assisting with
clean-up. Once the guests arrived and entrees were being taken out, the night became very
hectic. Early on in the night the dishwasher broke down, so we spent quite a bit of time
washing and drying crockery and cutlery for more than two hundred people, in between putting
out meals and clearing used dishes etc. It was an excellent work placement experience.
Left to right - Mrs McCann, Tayla Mullen, Abbey Henry, Ashley Tiedeman, Miranda Bell,
Clayton Wisemantel and Mrs McFarlane
It would have been interesting to have had a pedometer or “Fitbit” on; as I am sure we clocked
up several kilometres over the course of the evening. The students finished just after 9:30 pm
and I think that everyone would have slept well after a very busy night. This was, of course, on
top of a busy day at school.
The students were excellent as usual and were highly commended by the chef and catering
staff, as well as the patrons attending the function. With their energy, enthusiasm, polite and
helpful manner the students proudly represented St Clare’s.
Congratulations to all of you for being such excellent ambassadors for the school, and for
giving up your time at the end of a very busy term.
Thank you also, to Mrs McFarlane, for giving up her time to be with us on the night. As a
new person to the Hospitality industry, I certainly appreciated her knowledge and help.
Well done to everyone, and I know we are looking forward to the next “Hospitality” challenge.

NSW WHEELCHAIR ROADSHOW VISIT: On Monday the 25th July all of our Year 10
students had the opportunity to participate in the NSW Wheelchair Roadshow. Mr Rick Engles
from the NSW Transport authority talked to the
students about Road Safety and the consequences of
taking risks. He was born with Spina Bifida and has
been confined to a wheelchair since birth. He also
shared some of his life experiences that included
highlights such as representing Australia in both
Tennis and Rugby League and some of his challenges
of living without the use of his legs. Rick also shared
some stories of his friends who had been involved in
road related accidents and how making a decision
could determine the path of your life forever.
The students were then given the opportunity to play a game of Wheelchair Basketball to
experience what it is was like without the use of their legs. The students appeared to enjoy the
workshop and the students will continue to learn about road safety, the licensing scheme and
driver education in PDHPE throughout this term. Hopefully the message is clear that your
choices will not only affect you but so many other people around you. The risks for young
people, especially males, being involved in a road related accident is extremely high. Helping
our students to help themselves
is one of the key skills
encouraged at St Clare’s High
School. Karina Hogan,
PDHPE Studies Coordinator
BBQ REPORT: On Sunday, 24 July, 13 Year 10 students and their families sold 36 kgs of
sausages and 10 kgs of onions, at Bunnings, to raise money for St Vincent de Paul. This project
was targeted by the year group on their Reflection Day in Term 1. They felt that this was an
area where they could make a positive contribution to
supporting others in need in our community.

MATHS WORKSHOP - Mathematics Workshop provides the opportunity for every student to
obtain assistance and support in improving their understanding of mathematics. Four
mathematics teachers are available each week to explain the
concepts you are finding difficult or give assistance to enable
you to complete your homework, assignments or any work that
you may have missed due to absence from class.
WHEN IS IT ON? Wednesday lunchtime - every week.
Bring your lunch!
WHERE? Room 10
We hope to see you there!

Coordinator
LEAVE NOTES & STUDENT MESSAGES: It would be appreciated if parents/guardians
would send in a written note if their child needs to leave early for appointments etc. Notes
should be handed in at the front office in the morning before roll call. If parents/guardians
need to notify their child of a change of afternoon arrangements, it is necessary to phone the
school prior to 2:25 pm (End of Lunch – Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday & Friday) or prior to
1:55 pm (End of Lunch – Thursday Sport) as it is often difficult to locate students if their last
lesson is a PE Prac or there has been a room change. Students cannot be collected from the
school during school hours by anyone other than a parent or guardian without written
permission. Thank you.
LATE NOTES: Lateness to school is recorded as a partial absence and must be explained to
the school the same way as other forms of absence. Arriving Late for school requires a
handwritten note from a parent/carer or a phone call from a parent/carer or the absence is
recorded as an unexplained partial absence. Thank you.
SCHOOL CLINIC: Students are reminded that if they are unwell whilst at school they are to
advise their teacher who will then send them to the Front Office. If necessary, the office staff
will contact a parent while the student waits in the Clinic. Students are not to contact parents
on their mobile phones as this leaves teachers and office staff unaware of the situation and is
also in breach of the school policy – use of mobile phones. Thank you.
