ARTIE LIUZZA2009 HALL OF FAME INDUCTEE
Artie Liuzza is presently the head football coach at Slidell High School. He starred infootball and baseball at Chalmette High and was a two-year letterman in football atTulane University. Artie was formerly the head football coach and athletic director atSt. Bernard High School for four years. Before becoming head coach at Slidell in2007, Liuzza was the offensive coordinator for the Tigers when the team won ninedistrict championships and made the state playoffs for 19 seasons. The 1986 teamfinished as state runner-up and in 2004 as a semi-finalist. The Tigers have been to thestate playoffs twice during Liuzza’s tenure.

When Bobby graduated from Chalmette High in 1964, he was considered theschool’s best all-time, all around football player as the proto-typical every-down per-former. Scafidel set the Northeast Louisiana College record for most yards in a singlegame and ranked second in career rushing. He is still on the career top 10 rushing list.

The SBPSHOF instituted the Special Recognition honor last year and Caillouette becomes thesecond recipient of the group’s award as well as the namesake of the yearly honor.Elphage graduated from Chalmette High in 1974 as a four-sport letter winner in football,
basketball, baseball and track and field. He received a football scholarship from Tulane Univer-sity. He started at running back on the freshman team and was scheduled to be the GreenWave starting running back in the fall of 1975.A tragic tubing accident took Caillouette’s life on July 11, 1976. The local chapter of the Tu-
lane Athlete Booster Club was renamed in his honor as is Chalmette High’s most outstandingsenior male athlete each year with the Elphage Caillouette Award.

John Gebbia started coaching at Carolyn Park Playground in 1998 and from there he was involvedin every aspect of the Arabi facility. In fact, only a hurricane such as Katrina (2005) could break hisbond.
