All Are Invited to Enjoy a Performance By Our
St. Ann Ensemble
We are proud to support the talented musicians of St. Ann Parish! Three of our local schools are currently fundraising for band trips this spring: Memorial to Nashville, Marian to Florida, and TF South to New York. St. Ann parishioners who are members of these three bands will join together to form one ensemble next weekend and play for tips after all masses. Please be generous and help our enterprising young ladies and gentlemen as they work together to earn their own way on their trips.

MIND BLOWING FACTS
ABOUT THE STATUE OF LIBERTY
Excerpted from an article by Brandon Specktor
On June 17, 1885, 200,000 people lined the docks of
Lower Manhattan to watch the French steamer Isére car-
ry the Statue of Liberty into New York Harbor.
The “Statue of Liberty” is flattered that you recog-
nize her face, but wishes you’d get her name right. Ac-
cording to designer Frederic-Auguste Bartholdi, the
sculpture’s true title is “Liberty Enlightening the World.”
She has a face a mother could love—specifically,
Bartholdi’s mother, Charlotte, who is rumored to be the
model for Liberty’s massive copper visage. (Not to be
neglected, Bartholdi’s wife posed for the arms and tor-
so.)
She was a beacon of feminism. When women were
banned from attending the dedication on Bedloe's Island,
suffragists chartered a boat and held their own ceremony
in the nearby harbor, loudly proclaiming the hypocrisy of
men “erecting a Statue of Liberty embodied as a woman
in a land where no woman has political liberty.”
Despite easy access to Manhattan shopping, the lady
is a picky dresser. She wears a size 879 shoe and has a
35-foot waistline.
She weighs 204 metric tons, but don't call her fat. The
lady's copper skin is extremely thin – less than 1/16th of
an inch thick, to be exact.
Green is not her natural hair (or skin) color. At first
Liberty was a dull copper brown—however, as copper
oxidizes over time, it develops a patina to protect from
further deterioration. By 1906, she was green from head
to toe.
There are 7 rays on the Lady’s crown, one for each of
the world's continents. Together they give her a hat that
weighs more than 1,000 pounds.
Luckily she gets a stretch in now and then. In winds
of 50 mph or more, the statue can sway up to three inch-
es and her torch arm up to six.
Freedom isn’t free, and liberty ain’t
cheap either. The cost of building the
statue and pedestal amounted to more
than $500,000 – or more than $10 million
today.

Dear St. Ann Parish Family,
Happy New Year! May God continue
to bless us all with His many blessings
during this new year and always. We
thank Him for the gift of His son, Je-
sus, the best present of all! As a school, we hit the
ground running and returned to classes on January 5. As
I made my early morning rounds that day, I was inspired
by how quickly our teachers dug right into lessons and
even more inspired at our students’ attentiveness and
eagerness to learn. As the calendar rolled to 2017, our
8th grade leaders of the school “St. Ann’s Class of 2017”
are particularly excited.
Catholic Schools Week Celebratory Events We are two
weeks away from celebrating Catholic Schools Week.
I’ve always enjoyed this time: a week for all of the
Catholic schools in the nation to celebrate who we are
and what we do. This is also when we kick off our reg-
istration/enrollment opportunities for the 2017/2018
school year. Our tradition of excellence continues, and
we are blessed to build another Catholic school year.
Here’s a peek of what is planned for our St. Ann School
Community of Faith, Knowledge and Service:
Sunday, January 29—Faith in Our Parish We begin
our special week in prayer, with Student Family repre-
sentatives participating in Sunday Mass at 10:30 a.m.
The children have a surprise musical performance for
everyone. (Your toes will be tapping!)
School Open House: 11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.
Science Fair Exhibit – School Hall
Monday, January 30—Faith in Our Community
(School Spirit Day) We’ll proudly wear our school col-
ors of green and gold (or our gym uniforms) to show our
school spirit and pride. Go, Roughriders!
Tuesday, January 31—One Nation Under God
Students may visit our “J” Club Book Fair in the Li-
brary. “J” stands for Jesus. All books and items reflect
our Catholic Faith. Many of the stories are written by
the Daughters of St. Paul/Pauline Books and Media.
The Sisters will be on-hand at the Book Fair and will
speak to all classes about vocational opportunities. The
Book Fair continues until Thursday and will be open
until 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Wednesday, February 1—Faith in Our Families
(Parent and Pastor Appreciation Day)
Special surprises are in store for our parents and our
pastor, Fr. Bill.
Our doors will be open from 9-11:00 a.m. for guided
tours of our school.

Ultimate Payday!
Our next Early Bird drawing for
$500 will be Superbowl Sunday!
This year, only 1,000 Mother’s Day raffle tickets
will be available (part of the reason we didn’t mail
them―too many went unaccounted last year). We
are hoping to top what we made on the raffle last
year, which amounted to $56,781.93 after expens-
es and prizes. Tickets are now on sale in the Parish
Office during the week, and we will sell in the Nar-
thex three weekends before each Early Bird draw-
ing―the next one is February 5, 2017. Don’t forget
to fill out both sides of the stubs to be eligible for
seller and scholarship prizes! FMI, please call the
Parish Office at 895-6700.
Did you know you can also purchase tickets
online at Give Central? Visit our link at

Stop Saving Caps! Our ABC Caps program has reached its goal! We collected the 500 lbs. of plastic caps, tops, and lids needed to make our Buddy Bench. Thank you, thank you, thank you, to all who participated: our RE and school students and teachers who learned about recy-cling as they sorted, everyone who came out to help us sort last weekend, and all of you who have been saving and contributing caps for all these months. You may now go back to recycling them at home because we are ready to proceed! Our next step is transport-ing the caps down to Evansville, Indiana and trading them in for our 8 foot Buddy Bench. Do you have a truck that could handle that? Would you be willing to make the drive? We will provide gas and meal money to whomever volunteers. If you are able to help out, please call Debbie Bona FMI at 708-895-6700.
