Aloha Friends and Families: Mahalo for taking the time to read this letter and learn about the WindanSea Surf Club and what we represent in the community. From Legends Skip Frye and Butch Van Artsdalen, to big wave rider Derek Dunfee and World Longboard Champ Jen Smith, the WindanSea Surf Club has been a force in the surfing world since our inception in the early 1960’s. Now entering our sixth decade of existence, the Club seems to be busier than ever with numerous charity events, surfing contests, and other surf related gatherings throughout out the year. WINDANSEA SURF CLUB TO HOLD 25TH ANNUAL “KID’S DAY” La Jolla, California – WindanSea Surf Club will host its 25th annual “Kid’s Day at
the Beach,” a non-profit event offering fun, sun and surfing instruction for
underprivileged children, on August 20 at La Jolla Shores from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Over 60 children from St. Vincent de Paul Shelter for Homeless Families, located in
downtown San Diego, will take part in the “Kid’s Day” event. The children will have
the opportunity to learn how to surf and enjoy a beachside barbecue lunch and
bags of goodies donated by local and national sponsors. The event teaches
coordination and promotes confidence and enhanced self-esteem. Father Joe
Carroll will be on hand when the children arrive at 9 am to help commemorate this
landmark year for the event.
The Day at the Beach Foundation was founded by Scot Cherry, a member of the
WindanSea Surf Club in La Jolla. Harold Reid is the event’s director and he is
assisted by a team of generous supporters from the WindanSea Surf Club, who
volunteer and fundraise for the “Kid’s Day” event. Volunteers from across Southern
California, including members from other surfing organizations, also attend and
assist in teaching the children.

“For many of these children, Kid’s Day at the Beach is the first time they have ever
been to the ocean, even if they have grown up in San Diego,” says Reid. “The joy
this event puts in their hearts is evident; it shows on their faces and makes
everything we do to put on this event worth it one hundred times over. We
anticipate another exceptional turnout of both children and volunteers this year.”
In past years, Kid’s Day has attracted such surfing legends as Mike Doyle, John
Peck, surf photographer Tom Keck, and other local legends like Peter King, Saxon
Boucher, and more.
Volunteers include the City of San Diego Junior Lifeguards who donate time to help
oversee the safety of the event and WindanSea Surf Club members help teach the
children to surf. At least two physicians donate their time to be on hand – a
WindanSea Surf Club member, Dr. Karl Luber, and Dr. Austin Hewlett, who travels
from Huntington Beach each year to help out.
Silvergate Bank has been instrumental over many years by organizing fundraising
and funds management. The company has created a portal through their home
page where supporters can donate money to Kid’s Day electronically. The La Jolla
YMCA also donates a bus and arranges for a driver each year.
