Australia's national airline
Q.A.Nf.A.S. (Queensland AndNorthern Territory AerialServices Ltd) began on l6thNovember 1920, initially in Wintonin Queensland's Outback, thenmoving to Longreach beforerelocating to Brisbane and
ultimately Sydney. Ninety years on,
Qantas continues to lead the skies
for aviation in Australia and is theworld's most experienced inter-national carrier. Over this and thecoming editions we take a special
look back at the history of Qantas.

The Or-rtbacl< had been a tough environment to launch an airline butwithin a decade Qantas was not only meeting the needs of remoteregronal communities, the company was beginning to turn its sights on

for international flights, Qantas' partner airline, lmperial Airways,
operated the remainder of the service.
In one of many firsts for Qantas, the airline flew at night betweenLongr-each and Cloncurry made possible by the flat terrain. A series
of revolving beacon lights mounted on windmill towers, each
revolving at a different rate, provided a rudimentary aid to navigation
and lit the way for the Qartas pilots. One ol tlrese hisLor-rc navrgarior

Liberators were used to suDplement the Catalinas on the Indian Ocean
service but Qantas continued to operate Catalina flying boats until
1958. After the war, Qantas used Lancastrians and Hythe flying boats
to recommence overseas air services to England but these conversions
of wartime aircraft were not entirely suitable and purpose built airliners
were desperately needed.
The next chapter in Qantas' rnternational story, was the Lockheed
Constellation, or 'Connie' as they where affectionately l<nown The
first 'Connie' was delivered to Qantas in 1947, the same year that
Qantas was nationalized and started the famous 'Kangaroo Route,' an
incredibly fast four and a half day flightto London. The larger and faster
Qantas Super Constellations commenced operations in 1954. The
Constellation and later the Super Constellation, were the aircraft that
enabled the transport of relatively large numbers of people as well as
freight through the airi continuing the Qantas tradition of reliable and
comfortable transport.
ln 1956 Qantas made the momentous decision to order Boeing 707-
138s, The new jets arrived in 1959, heralding the dawn of the Jet Age
