The techniqueHI-SCAN 6040aTiX is a multi-view X-ray inspection system. Its X-ray

generators produce several independent images and data results. Explosives

are precisely defined by means of a computer-generated determination of the

relative atomic weight (Zeffective) and the density of the materials contained in

the piece of carry-on baggage inspected.

React to changes – act in anticipationThe fight against terrorism in civil aviation has historically focused on the detection of conventional weapons and dangerous items – a threat potential, which still exists. But the philosophy of terrorism is ever changing. The threat of suicide attacks using explosives now puts entirely new demands on security inspections: In particular the reliable detection of explosives in carry-on baggage.

• On the X-ray image explosives are difficult to distinguish from unperilous

organic items. The identification of explosives by the operator can only be

improved to a certain degree with training.

• Baggage content can be arbitrarily manipulated after the inspection process.

• Passenger volumes are increasing, and security checks have to be effected

faster and faster.

A new concept based on proven technologyUsing EDtS technology Smiths Heimann has for some time been offering

solutions for the automatic detection of explosives in checked baggage.

Now this technology has been further developed to apply the same capability

for automatic detection of explosives in carry-on baggage. The result:

Automatically detected explosives (top view)

Side view

The illustrationFor the visual inspection, the operator

is provided with two results with an

exceptional image resolution. This permits

an extremely fast and secure identification

of dangerous items, even if objects overlap.

The resultResults of the automatic explosives

detection process are immediately

presented to the operator in a red frame

on the screen. This extremely reliable

method of carry-on baggage inspection

actively assists operators and increases

throughput.

System integrationIf integrated into security control layouts

HI-SCAN 6040aTiX' unique design

preserves all roller conveyor connections,

maximum baggage size capacity, identical

user interfaces and TIP capability with

other HI-SCAN systems for carry-on

baggage inspection.
