Combined road-sea traffic is increasingCombined road-sea traffic is increasing to create an efficient ‘motorways-of-the-sea’ network in
addition to the long-established ferry routes to islands or on inland seas. It’s not difficult to see why:
On many operational routes, the ferry has proved to be an environmentally friendly logistic
alternative. On top of this, the ferry alternative offers tangible benefits compared to the full road option. The cost is lower
and road-sea traffic offers better on-time delivery performance for both accompanied and unaccompanied trailers.

Combined road-sea traffic: Motorways of the seaThe trans-European network of motorways of the sea is
intended to concentrate flows of freight on sea-based
logistical routes in such a way as to improve existing
maritime links or to establish new viable, regular and
frequent maritime links for the transport of goods
between Member States so as to reduce road congestion
and/or improve access to peripheral and island
regions and States. Motorways of the sea should not
exclude the combined transport of persons and goods,
provided that freight is predominant.

SLXe-300 Ferry Key Benefits
The SLXe-300 Ferry is a special version of the SLXe-300 model, already recognised as the best performer on the market.
In order to meet the specific requirements of the mid- and long-haul ferry routes, Thermo King has introduced unique
features to this model. With the SLXe-300 Ferry, you benefit from the highly standardised and consistent components
selection available on the entire SLXe range to guarantee easy and cost-effective maintenance.
Reinforced unit protectionReefer units are potentially exposed to the risk of shock
damage occurring during the critical loading/unloading
phase. This could result in additional downtime for
equipment refurbishment and potentially even loss of
the cargo. In order to optimise use of equipment and
guarantee the quality of the cargo load, the
SLXe-300 Ferry is available with:
• A specific protection kit designed to avoid any shock
damage while still allowing easy maintenance of the
unit: 2 sets of bars to be mounted on trailer front
wall (upper protection) and reefer bottom panel
(lower protection).
• Reinforced access doors plus specific flexible latches
to withstand minor shocks while remaining functional.
Guaranteed maximum reliabilityOnce disconnected from the ferry’s power supply, trailers
are often stored on the port dock waiting for the tractor
that will carry them to the final cargo load destination.
At this stage, the unit needs to restart, even when not
attended. Therefore, the SLXe-300 Ferry is equipped
with:
• An EON battery, from the latest and most reliable
generation of batteries available on the market.
• An integral SafeGuard Battery Protection Kit to
permanently monitor the battery charge level and to
disconnect the battery so it can reach the minimum
voltage level (12.2 V) required to allow a safe restart.

Increased capacity under high ambient conditionsOperation of the reefer units when the trailer is parked on
a ferry’s lower deck leads to more demanding operation
conditions compared to road transport, such as high
ambient temperatures and extended non-stop operation
sequences. The SLXe-300 Ferry is equipped with a
specific stand-by mode drive train, which includes:
• An oversized electric motor, fit for operation under
higher ambient conditions.
• An optimised starter panel allowing a smooth start
with reduced inrush current and component stress.
• Compared to the standard “road only” unit, the
SLXe-300 Ferry can deliver up to 30% more capacity
in full electric mode.
Built-in corrosion protectionIn order to withstand the severe conditions of maritime
environments, the SLXe-300 Ferry benefits from all
the experience acquired by Thermo King in refrigerated
on-road, rail and maritime transport applications around
the globe.
Thanks to the use of high-grade stainless steel and
galvanised steel, a plastic electric box, e-coating and
powder painting of sensitive components, the durability
of your investment is guaranteed.

the latest fuel-saving technologies while delivering the
refrigeration performance the market demands.
Thermo King’s Electronic Throttling Valve (ETV) uses a
microprocessor to control the system precisely. As the
temperature approaches the set point, the ETV begins
to close, throttling the suction gas returning to the
compressor. This continues until the ETV becomes almost
completely closed, thus reducing engine load and
saving fuel.
Other ETV features include:
• Maximisation of capacity for faster pull-down and
less fuel usage.
• Elimination of temperature spikes for extended
product life.
• High ambient operation for worry-free unattended

From the start of the SLXe development project, a key deliverable was reduction of environmental impact. The design team
conducted a life cycle assessment of the SLX range to identify areas where the greatest gains could be achieved without
compromising cost of ownership or performance. The result is a product range with a substantially reduced environmental
footprint.
