Kanissa Board Chairmen

Honoring: Kanissa Board Chairmen
Khosrow Hakimian (Shaare Shalom 2016-2019) - Nearly 20 years after the
construction of Shaare Shalom, Khosrow's board was able to accomplish the
politically challenging and logistically difficult renovation of the Main Sanctuary
and Social Hall, revitalizing the building. Also, several new morning minyans were
added, causing a vast increase in weekday Kanissa attendance. Khosrow's board
also introduced an elaborate shabbat kiddush table, feeding the vast multitude,
while keeping the budget stable by buying and making the food with staff.
Khosrow has served on multiple synagogue boards and central boards.
David Hazghiyan (Shaare Shalom 2013-2016) - Long a dedicated and
devoted community volunteer, David's term was conducted while holding the dual
offices of Chairmen of Shaare Shalom Kanissa Board, and Treasurer of Central
Board. David's board saw the re-paving of Shaare Shalom's vast parking lot,
upgrades to the security and CCTV systems, and a complete and much needed
gut renovation of the Gym, bringing new excitement to the most critically used
recreational space. Along with an overhaul and increased efficiency of building
staff, David's board also successfully collected many aged receivables, pumping
vital funds into the charitable organization.
Morris Aziz (Shaare Shalom 2007-2010) - Ever mindful of Spirituality in the
synagogues, Morris' board saw a dramatical increase in the sales of Tefilin, Taalit,
Mezuzahs, and other Judaica to the masses. In a similar vein, Morris oversaw the
installation of a heykhals & bemas for gym & early minyans, and recaptured unused
space to create additional built in storage, added cabinetry & storage to the
Social Hall and retrofitted much of the building with LED lighting. A fore-runner to
the Yom Kippur services in the Social Hall, the board added a tent the parking lot to
house the additional minyan. Morris continues his tireless efforts in many of the
community’s charitable work, including The Angel Fund.
David Kordvani (Shaare Shalom 2001-2007 & 2010-2013) - Almost a
perpetual chairmen (serving on 4 kanissa boards & 2 Central Boards), David's
terms are credited with so much, but most noteworthy was the creation of the
robust 'Gym Minyan'. During a dangerous era of American assimilation, David
had the foresight to create & promote this minyan for over 200 Mashadi teens
(virtually unheard of in America). An accomplished writer, David also served as
Editor-in-chief of so many Mashadi publications, such as Shalom Week (running for
over 25 years and in 18 minyans), Mashadi Wedding Album, Shalom Magazine,
acclaimed children's book Rachel's Diary, and an unprecedented book of
Halacha & Mashadi Customs with the Mashadi rabbis.
Shmuel Livian (Shaare Shalom 1998-2001) - As part of the first official kanissa
board, Shmuel’s term, in conjunction with the Central Board, shattered a stigma,
and took to hiring the community's first full time, English speaking Rabbi to engage
the American born youth. Under the board’s guidance and direction, the dynamic
Rabbi Kassorla connected with youth and endeavored to face modern day
problems in America. Shmuel's board also established the first organized Shabbat
morning program for kids age 6-11 with an official youth director, including multiple
organized classes with teachers, famously dubbed the "M &M club". Along with
the territory of being a pioneer board, Shmuel oversaw the writing the rules and
regulations of the Synagogue.
Andy Levian (Ohr Esther 2013-2016) - Facing dwindling kanissa attendance by women,
Andy's board was credited with the creation of the extremely popular ladies lounge, causing a
previously dismal ladies attendance to skyrocket. Andy's term saw the reconfiguration and
demising of multiple rooms to yield new classes for Shalom School to meet the growing
attendance, a more centrally located security room, and better storage for the growing uses of
the building, as well as a needed renovation of the playground. Many minor but significant
upgrades and transformations also took place, such as such as installation of doors on the
cafeteria to improve classes, vision lights on the doors of the main sanctuary to improve the
overall kanissa experience, and purchasing proper mekhitzahs in place of curtains in the
singles minyan.
Jonathan Hazghiyan (Ohr Esther 2010-2013) - Officially the youngest Chairmen in the
history of UMJCA, Jonny's passion for the community yielded many fruits, including the hiring of
Rabbis Adam and Mosheh, and started off their guidance of the singles minyan at Ohr
Esther. Jonny’s board slashed operating expenses & used rebates to put entire building on LED
at virtually no cost, made multiple improvements to main minyan, and built a much overdue
heykhal for the singles minyan. In a revolutionary move, Jonny’s board implemented the
popular “Buy it Now”, significantly increasing fundraising and saving time on high holidays, and
also implemented the very first UMJCA Charity Auction. Jonny also co-created UMJCA
programming, which introduced Shabbat kids programming, the lauded “Mommy & Me”,
cooking, teaching, and so many other coveted UMJCA programs, including the tremendously
successful Camp MJC.
Oliver Etessami (Ohr Esther 2016-2019) - Taking on the long awaited task of
transformation of 'auditorium to kanissa', Oliver's term saw a major renovation of the Main
Sanctuary, which included the timely and desperately needed addition of over 20 seats for
young couples, as well as physically elevating the ladies on bleacher style seats to be more
engaged in services. Ending an 8 year drought, the board (in conjunction with Central Board)
finally filled the rabbi position, bringing much needed guidance and spirituality to services.
Oliver's board also oversaw a cosmetic makeover to the Senior Lounge, the energy efficient
swap of parking lot lights to LED, the replacement of worn carpeting, and the long overdue
installation of the "Ohr Esther" building sign, complete with uplighting. Oliver also established
the first MYC Singles Directory, and worked alongside the marriage committee to increase and
broaden outreach to singles by way of creative programs.
Mehrdad Kohanim (Ohr Esther 2007-2010) - Following in the footsteps of his late
father, Mr. Haroun Kohanim (Z"l), Mehrdad took on the multi-faceted challenges of being the first
chairman of the fledgling Ohr Esther, the first multipurpose community center and synagogue, host
to the 2nd largest minyan of Mashadis. Mehrdad’s board drafted & passed the by-laws of the
center in a referendum, and navigated the challenging politics and establish seating assignments,
and the hiring of some of our first rabbis in Great Neck. Together with his siblings, the entire family
has helped the community by serving Talmud Torah and multiple synagogue boards.
Abdolrahim Etessami (Shaare Tova) - A leader who pre-dated the Central Board,
Mr. Abdolrahim Etessami took on the mantle of leadership from our first days in America. A well
respected leader, so many of the issues of Synagogue patrons and community members went to
the house of Mr. Etessami for mediation and resolution. The defacto Kanissa board chairmen also
helped implement and run so many of our current practices, including standardizing a mid-morning
Shabbat Shacharit service to discourage the fledgling community of immigrants from working on
Saturday. Mr. Etessami’s vast multitude of accomplishment and lifelong service include being in-
volved in the purchase of our first synagogues and cemeteries, the hiring of our first Rabbi in Ameri-
ca, and so many other feats.
Benny Hematian (Shaare Rachamim 2016-2019) - Being the building's first official
board, Benny's term worked quickly to make major social, aesthetic, and spiritual upgrades to
Shaare Rachamim. The board adapted and claimed a sizeable portion of the municipal
parking lot to a protected children’s play area & stroller storage, expanded and renovated the
kitchen to serve the newly coming masses, and greatly increased both Jewish and secular
learning and seminars in the previously underutilized building. In tandem with Central Board
and Ohr Esther, brokered an arrangement which placed a consistent rabbi in every Shabbat
minyan in the community. Along with Benny’s board, the family works hard to make Shaare
Rachamim an increasingly popular hub for Mashadis.
