    This tense is formed with the helping

    verb-to-be, in the present tense, plus

    the present participle of the verb (with

    an -ingending)

    Examples :

    1) He is singing.

    2) She is listening.

    3) They are sleeping.

    4) I am going home.

    The present continuous can suggest that

    an action is going to happen in the future,especially with verbs that convey the idea

    of a plan or of movement from one place

    or condition to another.

    1) The team is arriving in two hours.2) He is moving to Portland this

    since the present progressive can

    suggest either the present or the

    future, it is usually modified by

    adverbs of time.

    The past progressive is used to talkabout an activity that was in progress

    at a specific point of time in the past.

    The emphasis/focus is on the durationof the activity in the past.

    This tense is formed with the helping

    verb-to-be, in the past tense, plus thepast participle of the verb (with an -ing

    ending)

    Uses of Past Continuous

    Tense1. Actions in progress in the past Examples:

    - He was playingfootball.

    - We were skiing.

    2. Actions in progress at the specific timein the past

    Examples:- He was sleepingall night long.

    - What were you doing at 3.00?

    3. Two actions happening at the same

    time (in the past)

    Use the past progressive with whileto talkabout two actions.

    Examples:

    - While she was preparingdinner, he waswashingthe dishes.

    - While I was answeringthe phone, my

    wife was cooking dinner.

    - I was reading while he was skiing.

    4. To focus on the duration of an action,

    not its completion.

    Examples:- Khairi was reading a book last night. (we

    dont know if he finished the book)

    - Shafiq was playing games yesterday.

    Is used to talk about actions which willbe in progress at a time in the future.

    Examples:

    1) I suppose it will be raining when we

    start.

    2) This time tomorrow I will be sittingon the beach in Kelantan

    the future which are already planned

    or which are expected to happen inthe normal course of things.

    examples:1) The usrah will be held next week.
