MISSION STATEMENT

We are a Catholic Christian Community of diverse origins united as a family under the patronage of Saint Jude Thaddeus, the apostle, friend, and relative of Jesus. We believe, cherish, and celebrate the saving truth of Christ as handed down to us in Church

Universal. We are committed to learn, live, teach and spread the beautiful and precious Catholic faith. We seek to become the Beacon of Christ on the hill in our neighborhood and beyond.

THE ASCENSION OF THE LORD

May 13, 2018

Soaring Dreams!

We had First Communion on May 5th for 160 children. It is the most joyful oc-casion for these children to respond to the Lord’s invitation to live in Him, just as He chooses to live in them. The Eucharist is such a stupendous reality of this mutual in-dwelling of God in us and we in Him. We live on this earth with all of its contingen-cies, limitations and frustrations. Yet, we breathe the air of heaven. We experience the reality of God’s Kingdom even during our earthly journey. The blinding glory of the spring makes us delirious with joy and hope. Under the all

encompassing sun, we have a luminous vision of the nature and a refreshing revisit to our inner soul. The month of May is the fairest, the most beautiful, hence dedicated to the Mother of Jesus, the Queen of heaven. In honoring our Mother, the pride of humanity, we celebrate our own sublime destiny and call. St. Paul prays: “May the eyes of your hearts be enlightened, that you may know what is the hope that belongs to his call! (Ephesians 1:18)”

We live on this earth as pilgrims, although at times we may live as if there is no tomorrow, refusing to look up. But, each one of us as homo erec-tus, that is, standing tall, is made to look up to heaven. We are not easily satisfied by earthly offers and achievements. The heartache of hungering for more and thirsting for something higher is latent in all of us. This “condition” affects all of us. We are absolutely obliged to tend to our supernatural end. This is not some arbitrary afterthought to our human life, but the very stuff of our existence, an objective and ontological mode of our being as human persons.

We are made to rise above the mere trappings of this world. We try to stay awake so that we may not render blind subordination to the empty promises of this world, or the nihilistic and fatalistic surrender to the helpless cycle of suffering and evils. Sublimation of our inner motifs, reaching for the absolute good, beauty and truth… these are the genuine pursuits in each of us.

It is graduation season. College education is far more than just career preparation and training. Young people are encouraged to take some time off to study and reflect on matters that will last unto eternity. Young people need to ask why, not just what.

The cure to human heartache does not come through our own efforts alone, but through a realization and acceptance of the objective reality of God’s self-giving love in Christ. We celebrate the Ascension of Christ who, “having taken upon his shoulders our nature, gone astray and deadened by sin, ascended and brought it unto God the Father” (Orthodox Matins canon for the Ascension, Ode 7).

Sometimes, people confess that they may have lost faith in God. But, God does not lose us. Regardless of our faith or lack of it, God continues His self-giving. That’s the objective history of salvation, which is to be subjectively appropriated. There is a disquieting but unwitting tendency to privatize, and thus trivialize, faith. But our relationship with God is not just a private matter, rather it is an intensely personal matter, involving utmost attention in our intellect, free will, and lifestyle.

Our celebration of the Ascension of Christ includes our sublimation, soaring up high. Soaring does not just belong to our dreams; it is in our nature, and thus in God’s plan.

Fr. Paul D. Lee

Shrine of St. Jude Parish will offer Mother’s Day carnations to all mothers for using their unique and marvelous gift from God to bring new life into the world. There is no more important person in the world! Also please pray for expectant mothers that they may care for the child they are expecting.

Padre Paul D. Lee
