The Chatter Box The Bear and the Nightingale by Katherine Arden Reviewed by Kathy Cohen

If, like me, you loved fairy tales and folk tales as a child, you will enjoy this adult fairy tale, a debut novel by a talented writer. Katherine Arden delayed her college career by a year and went to live and study in Moscow. While enrolled in Middlebury College in Vermont she majored in French and Rus-sian literature. Her knowledge and love of Russian folk tales shines through this story which is based on Russian folklore, but reads like a contemporary novel about a young woman discovering herself and her place in the world.

Set in Medieval Russia, far from Moscow and the dangerous world of royal politics, Vasilisa grows up on the edge of the forest, safe in the care of her mother, Marina, and nurse, Dunya. Her mother dies and her heartbroken father stays single for a long time until he is persuaded that his eldest daughter needs the care and supervision of a mother and he re-marries. What follows is a battle between his fanatically religious new wife and his daughter, who has been taught by her mother and nurse to propitiate the spirits of hearth, fields and woods lest they allow evil spirits to harm the villagers. Readers of the Harry Potter series will remember Dobby, the house elf, a similar type of spirit. Folk tales around the world have similar types of magical creatures, so some of the story will seem familiar. Vasilisa is a wonderful heroine who struggles almost alone with the forces of evil who dwell in the frozen forest and you will be in suspense until the end of this delightful story. The Long Weekend by Adrian Tinniswood Reviewed by Marion Mango

If you have been afflicted with a considerable case of “Downton Ab-bey” withdrawal, then this non-fiction peek into the inner workings of English country homes between 1918 and 1939 may be just the salve to soothe you. As the sun sets slowly on the British Empire change reverberated through the halls of English country homes, bringing with it the entic-ing dream of owning a home in the idyllic countryside which had pre-viously eluded other echelons of both British and American society. High estate taxes, the slow depopulation of farming communities due to war, attrition and the shift to larger cosmopolitan areas, plus the

disinclination to continue in or join the ranks of those “in service” were all contributing factors towards the demise of many of these venerable venues. Drawing upon humorous memoirs, letters, diaries and eye-witness accounts of those both “upstairs” and “downstairs”, the author brings these stately homes to life as never before opening a door for the reader into a world at once opulent and ordinary, noble and notorious, and forever veiled in myth. We see beyond the gilt and glitz, old money and new, hunting par-ties, scandals and fabulous feasts whose participants carefully protected their image, some-times at tremendous cost. The likes of the Astors, Churchills, Charlie Chaplin, the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, William Randolph Hearst, Marion Davies, Virgina Woolf, Agatha Christie and Cecil Beaton parade across the pages often revealing their all-too-human foibles. Adrian Tinniswood is a Senior Research Fellow at the University of Buckingham in England and has authored many other books on historical topics. He resides in Bath.

Music of the Heart Starring: Meryl Streep, Gloria Estefan, Angela Bassett, Aidan Quinn PG/2 hours/1999/Drama Reviewed by Marion Mango Here is a true story to touch and melt your heart! Featuring Meryl Streep in her Oscar –nominated role as Roberta Guaspari , an impoverished divorcee and mother of two sons, it draws you in right from the very start. Besides her admirable determination to build a better life for them all, she has a deep desire to share her musical abilities with children in the East Harlem neighborhood where she now resides. The local school principal (Angela Bassett)needs a great deal of convincing to even temporarily allow Roberta to try out her program , which soon proves so successful it is extended to other nearby schools…with Roberta provid-ing the violins. There are many challenges to overcome and the community pulls together to accomplish their goals. The finish is spectacular---all of it true! Also included is a delightful documentary, “Small Wonders”, showcasing the real –life participants.

Movie Reviews

I Remember Mama Starring: Irene Dunne, Barbara Bel Geddes, Oscar Homolka, Ellen Corby Black and White/1948/NR/134 minutes/drama Reviewed by Marion Mango Set in 1910 San Francisco, this simple, heartwarming story will enchant you with its portrayal of a Norwegian family trying to adjust to their new surroundings. Their financial situation is, to say the least, stringent. Parceling out Papa’s meagre wages is a weekly family ritual ---will there be enough for the essentials, let alone Mama’s much – needed winter coat? Somehow she always manages to announce, much to the family’s relief, “We don’t have to go to the bank this time.” Mama has two sisters with very different personalities, one of whom would like to marry a man deemed unacceptable by the others due to his occupation. Mama’s eldest daughter has exceptional writing talent and she goes to unusual, for her, lengths to ensure her child’s work is seen by a prominent writer. All of the stars mentioned above received much –deserved Academy Award nominations for their wonderful work in this irresistible film, which was based on Kathryn Forbes’ novel, “Mama’s Bank Account”. Any day can be a good day to see “I Remember Mama.” Enjoy!

Americanah by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie Reviewed by Bonnie Sue Pokorny The author is Nigerian and this novel is about growing up in Nigeria and then going abroad for college. There are several main characters that are in this book. One goes to America and learns for the first time what being "black" is. Another in England ends up being deported and another is an older doc-tor with a child and learns how to raise a child "American style", It is a fun filled and fascinating book about the different cultures and how they inter-act.

Gwendy's Button Box by Stephen King and Richard Chizmar Reviewed by Bonnie Sue Pokorny

I enjoy novellas. They are longer than a short story but not as long as a nov-el. You can sit down and read this in an evening or two. In this one, a young boy is given a Poloraid camera for his birthday. However, all the pictures come out as a dog in different stages of running. He bring the camera to a fix it man who tries to swindle the boy. If you like creepy stories (but not gory) this book is scary but a lot of fun.

IN-DI-GES-TION By Marion Mango History must be suffering from indigestion. It keeps repeating itself.

Gravity'll get you Everytime! By Marion Mango Harry, Kuddles, Goolara and me climbed into our eucalyptus tree and, while dancing merrily, discovered the Law of gravity. Now Harry, Kuddles, Goolara and me danced even more jollily; safety nets beneath our tree contribute to our joie de vivre!

Oldies are NOT necessarily Goodies By Marion Mango It was a hot, humid night. The windows were open to admit whatever there was of air. Suddenly, there was a screeching sound--- a car's radio blared--- as it lingered outside I could hear that golden oldie, "I left my heart in San Francisco." It occurred to me, "Why would anyone want to leave their heart in San Francisco? They'd have a hard time finding it in all that fog!"

HE WHO ARRANGES SPEAKS by Jerry Sexton Through my window, green-blue of receding scene turning to blue mauve in a purple distance. In my room, petals falling yellow one by one to orange-brown table. Time come-going and distance purple still. But close, petals fallen and in place changed to brown. Window closed against time and distant constancy. But time... And here in continuous near I have now to chang for new.

SEASCAPES(S) by Jerry Sexton Gibbous moon, rain clouds. Flicker crack of lightning, rain falling. There, midground trees, a widening stream. In a distant meadow, caribou. And here, the sea. Sun behind fog and land stretching below toward a vanishing point now shrouded. Scent of pine on a light breeze. Sound of gulls, calling. And there, the sea.
