Of course not, but that’s what the media would haveyou believe in the latest hit job on dietary supplements.A recent meta-analysis—a review of over 100 differentrandomized controlled trials—found that multivitamins,vitamin D, calcium, and vitamin C showed no benefitsin the prevention of cardiovascular disease, heartattack, stroke, or premature death but did find benefitsfor B-vitamins in preventing stroke. Despite glaringissues with the analysis, and positive findingsregarding the benefits of supplements notwithstanding(not only in this meta-analysis but in a number ofothers), the media is replete with headlines such as“Yet Another Study Says Vitamin Supplements AreWorthless.” This reporting evidences the media’spenchant to twist the facts to fit a particular narrativeabout supplements—one which benefits drugcompanies that spend billions on advertising eachyear.First, the actual findings of the study are being widelymisreported. Far from proving there are no healthbenefits from supplements, the study found that B-vitamins such as B12 and folic acid were associatedwith a 20% reduction in risk of stroke.The study itself also suffered from a number oflimitations, very few of which are discussed in thearticles claiming that supplements are “useless.” First,many of the studies included in the meta-analysis usedPfizer’s Centrum multivitamin. A look at Centrum’singredients shows that many of the vitamins aresynthetic and are present in the least absorbable form.The point is that Centrum and other vitamins of its kind,given these ingredients, are hardly the best examplesof vitamins to use in a study looking into the potentialhealth benefits of supplements—no integrative doctorworth his or her salt would recommend them.There are more problems with the meta-analysis andthe reporting that surrounds it. Not only did the studiesthat the authors reviewed mostly look at Centrum—they only looked at what effect a few nutrients had on alimited number of conditions: stroke, heart attack,cardiovascular disease, and premature death. Themedia takes the results of this narrow study to makethe extraordinary claim that vitamins don’t work, period.This is irresponsible journalism that could lead to realharm: how many people will stop taking their vitaminsas a result of this sloppy reporting?It seems fairly obvious why supplements are soconsistently attacked in the media. Big Pharma spendsabout $3 billion each year marketing drugs toconsumers, about $90 million of which is printadvertising. Media companies, ever reliant on addollars, would hate to see that money disappear by,say, reporting honestly about supplements, which areBig Pharma’s competition.Biased journalism that misinforms consumers aboutthe benefits of supplements is a major threat toconsumers’ ability to take control of their health withoutexpensive and oftentimes dangerous drugs. But thereare other dangers that would eliminate consumeraccess to supplements altogether. We’ve beenreporting on the FDA’s New Dietary Ingredient (NDI)guidance which, if implemented unchanged, wouldwipe thousands of supplements off the market byforcing products that have been on the market safelyfor years to go through a system akin to a drug pre-approval process.The drug industry, along with the biased media andfederal agencies they exert influence over, isundermining cheap, safe, and effective naturalmedicine in the hope that they can sell us more of theirsynthetic, ineffective, expensive drugs. We cannot letthem succeed.
