SEVA Energie AG block-type thermal power stations –
modern and environmentally compatible technology for electricity and heat generation

SEVA Energie AG has been producing
its block-type thermal power stations
at its new location, the Ecopark in
Emstek.
SEVA INTRODUCES ITSELF
Tradition and know-how
The SEVA Energie AG was established in
1982 as a GmbH (limited liability com-
pany). SEVA staff recognised quite early
that a change would come about in the
realm of electricity and heat gen-
eration. The anticipated scarcity of fos-
sil fuels, restrictions in the utilisation of
nuclear energies and the intensifi ed uti-
lisation of wind power stations clearly
showed the enormous potential in the
utilisation of regenerative energies.
With the objective of generating elec-
tricity and heat effi ciently, SEVA
started in the early 1990’s with the
construction of block-type thermal
power stations (also known as com-
bined heat & power plants, CHP), ini-
tially for operation with heating oil or
natural gas, and later increasingly for
application in biogas plants. The
increasing demand for block-type ther-
mal power stations led to the construc-
tion of a production and offi ce building
in Ahlhorn in 1993. The SEVA Energie
AG was established by Günther J.
Schulz on 1 January 2000; from then
on the fi rm placed its main emphasis
The SEVA Energie AG is a continually
growing, innovative company, which is
amongst the leading manufacturers of
biogas block-type thermal power
stations in Germany.

SEVA, your competent partner in energy matters
Today the SEVA Energie AG employs
150 people, and is an apprentice-
training enterprise for commercial
professions, mechatronics specialists,
electricians as well as for information
science specialists and logistics special-
ists. In 2007, the company produced
block-type thermal power stations with
an installed total output of 60 mega-
watts on a present-day production
area of ,000 m2.
In addition to several distribution
and service branch establishments
in Germany, the SEVA Energie AG is
also active on the international market.
For instance, SEVA contact partners
are available for customers in the USA,
Luxembourg, Italy and Japan. There is
also an increasing interest in block-type
thermal power stations abroad, and
particularly in the SEVA Energie AG’s
know-how with regard to the utilisation
of regenerative and alternative energy
sources.

BLOCK-TYPE THERMAL POWER
STATIONS
Function and technology
As a result of the generation of electric-
ity and heated coupled in block-type
thermal power stations, the utilised pri-
mary energy utilised is optimally exploi-
ted. The burden on the environment
is thereby relieved vis-à-vis the con-
ventional supply of electricity and heat
from power stations and boilers.
SEVA Energie AG block-type thermal
power stations achieve electricity-side
efficiencies of over 40 %. In compari-
son with uncoupled generation of elec-
tricity and heat, the utilisation of these
block-type thermal power stations
allow considerable energy savings
(over 35 %) to be realised.
The SEVA Energie AG aggregates are
for the most part produced for utili-
sation in biogas plants and operation
with vegetable oil. If one compares the
CO2 emissions of a block-type ther-
mal power station with the emissions
from normal power stations and boil-
ers, the block-type thermal power
station shows a much more favourable
CO2 balance and protects the environ-
ment. Refraining from the utilisation
of fossil fuels allows a virtually CO2–
neutral utilisation of block-type
thermal power stations.
In addition to the application in bio-
gas plants, this decentralised form of
energy supply is also industrially applied
for provision of process heat or for
steam generation. In addition to
block-type thermal power stations for
operation with regenerative and fossil
fuels, SEVA Energie also plans and
builds turnkey facilities, such as com-
plete biogas and vegetable oil
plants. Furthermore, SEVA offers heat
supply contracts (also called contract-
ing), and provides favourable heat at
predetermined prices.
As an operator and reliable partner, the
SEVA Energie AG then takes care of the
planning, financing and regular mainte-
nance of the heating plant.
As a result of the coupling of the waste
heat from cooling water, charge air and
waste gas, the facilities (with supply
temperatures of 90 to 110 °C) are ide-
ally suitable for utilisation in proximity
heating networks and building
heating systems.

GAS OTTO ENGINES
Performance and effi ciency
Gas Otto engines work according to
the internal combustion principle, and
have been specially developed for ope-
ration with gas. The operation with
high-grade combustible gasses such as
methane (CH4), the main constituent
of natural gas, is characterised through
a high degree of effi ciency, a clean
combustion and a good CO2 balance.
In order to minimise the nitrogen oxide
emissions, the engines are operated as
so-called “lean-burn engines” with a
high degree of excess air.
Gas Otto engines are applied, amongst
other things, for energetic utilisation
of lean gases which are created during
the fermentation of organic wastes
(biogases and landfi ll gases). Gas Otto
engines can also be operated with
other types of gases such as natural
gas or propane gas, which can be use-
ful for starting biogas plants in order
to provide the necessary process heat.
The SEVA Energie AG produces block-type
thermal power stations for small and medium-
size gas engines in the power range from
50 kW to 1,700 kW. The well-develop ed
technology enables safe operation of these
engines with biogas under compliance with
waste gas limits according to TA air.

VEGETABLE OIL ENGINES
Stability and attractiveness
Vegetable oil-driven block-type thermal
power stations are considered to be an
effi cient alternative to aggregates
which are operated with fossil fuels.
The engines utilised in these block-type
thermal power stations are serial diesel
engines which are adapted by the
SEVA Energie AG for operation with
vegetable oil.
After reaching the operating tempera-
ture, a changeover to vegetable oil
operation takes place automatically,
and the aggregate is supplied with
fuel from the main tank. In turn, an
automatic changeover to operation
with biodiesel occurs if the block-type
thermal power station is turned off,
and the lines for the fuel supply as well
as the engine are fl ushed.
SEVA Energie AG vegetable oil block-
type thermal power stations are
resistant to long-term utilisation of
vegetable oils.
Because of the exclusive utilisation
of technically well-developed
engines and components of the
highest workmanship quality, the
SEVA Energie AG aggregates are opti-
mally equipped for stronger material
stress through the utilisation of vege-
table oil.
SEVA produces vegetable oil block-type
thermal power stations with thermal
outputs ranging from 100 to 550 kW,
and thus offers its customers a large
selection of block-type thermal power
stations featuring various power
classes.

PILOT INJECTION ENGINES
Stability and attractiveness
Pilot injection engines work accord-
ing to the diesel principle and are self-
ignition engines. Industrial diesel
engines, which are adapted to gas
operation through modifi cations, are
frequently utilised.
With pilot injection engines only the
energy required for igniting the fuel
mixture is drawn from the injection
system. Similar to an Otto engine,
A pilot injection block-type thermal power station for installation in an engine room
the main portion of the energy is pro-
vided via the suction system.
These pilot injection engines are utilised
in biogas block-type thermal power sta-
tions in order to burn biogas. For this
purpose the biogas is admixed to the
combustion air by means of a gas
mixer and ignited through the sup-
plied ignition oil. In contrast to
natural gas, biogas has a very high
antiknock quality, and can therefore be
drawn into these diesel engines with-
out the danger of a spontaneous igni-
tion. Adjustments are made so that the
ignition oil portion maximally amounts
to 10 % of the supplied fuel output.

Maximum safety for continuous operation
Included amongst these emergency
power generators is a modern plant
control system, which automatically
starts the back-up power supply in
case of emergency, and later – if the
public network can reassume the sup-

Furthermore, the SEVA Energie AG
also offers peak-load generators
for short-term energy demand. These
peak-load generators ensure the supply
in the event of fl uctuating supply, and
enable production operations to
achieve stable and particularly safe
energy management.
These systems are controllable, and the
foreseeable peak load can also cover
load peaks within the range of minutes.
Peak load is frequently traded on elec-

Safety and protection
Electricity is a resource of elemen-
tary importance for all companies.
Various environmental incidents show
that the public electricity supply is not
always able to cope with extreme infl u-
ences such as storms, snow, ice and
fl oods. And so it is meaningful for
companies to make themselves inde-
pendent vis-à-vis external disturbances
by obtaining their own electricity
supply systems.
With an emergency power generator
from the SEVA Energie AG, ongoing
operation can be maintained in such
emergency situations by means of a
stable emergency power plant.
As a result of this reliable safety facil-
ity, the customer is protected against
economic losses, and is naturally also
able to provide important devices, sys-

SPECIAL ACCESSORIES
Flexibility and variety
SEVA Energie AG containers are spe-
cially manufactured for the installation
of block-type thermal power plants.
Depending on the model of installed
block-type thermal power station, the
containers are delivered in various sizes
ranging from 20 to 40 feet long. With
their special width and special height
of 3 metres, these containers are larger
than the otherwise delivered standard
container, and are also offered as a two-
room or three-room container.
For biogas processing the SEVA Energie
AG offers gas cooling mechanisms
for all deliverable block-type thermal
power stations. In this connection the
biogas is dehumidifi ed or dried through
compressor cooling and a shell-and-
tube heat exchanger. As a result of
this drying process, the water is con-
densed, collected and drained off.
On request, SEVA Energie AG gas fl ares
are immediately mounted with the block-
type thermal power station, or also
mounted afterwards. The gas fl ares are
included in the various services, and are
supplied and mounted including control
cabinet.
Tank farms are also included in the
scope of delivery from the SEVA Energie
AG. And so in addition to double-walled
tank systems ranging from 1,000 to
100,000 litres, customers can also pro-
cure special tanks for underground
storage and insulated tanks for the stor-
age of vegetable oils. Moreover, the
SEVA Energie AG offers a tank control
mechanism for vegetable oil plants,
which has been specially developed for
utilisation with vegetable oil in two-tank
systems. The tank farms are delivered
as ready-made mounted, and include
the piping for the block-type thermal
power station.
SEVA Energie AG heating distributors
are mainly installed in containers, but can
also be utilised for installations in
engine rooms. On request, the distribu-
tors will be equipped with pumps, mix-
ers and heat meters.
Customers are offered various solution
possibilities for sound reduction.
The motor sound can be reduced by up
to 40 dB(A) at a distance of 10 metres
through specially manufactured sound-
absorbing hoods. The waste gas
sound can be reduced through the utili-
sation of combination sound
absorbers so that plant operation is
even possible in residential areas. The
re-cooling systems can also be delivered
as sound-reduced. The SEVA Energie
AG works together with experienced
sound experts in order to take into
account any problems with sound insu-
lation, even in the planning phase.
