The Porsche Werks Reunion 2015 was held Friday, August 14th at the Rancho Canada Golf Club in Carmel Valley, California. Hosted by the Porsche Club of America, the second edition of this single-marque event was met with an overwhelming amount of show goers and all told, over 700 Porsches in attendance from every generation. The 2015 Werks Reunion celebrated the 40th anniversary of the introduction of the 911 Turbo and the 50th anniversary of the 912.
For the second year the Werks Reunion had the assistance of Porsche Cars North America and Michelin, which provided a Le Mans class-winning 1996 Porsche 911 GT1, along with several Porsche ‘GT’ road cars. A 918 Spyder, Carrera GT and 959 rounded out the supercar display. Perhaps more interesting for the older audience was the assemblage of cars from major collections like the Ingram Family and Porsche Motor-sport’s recently restored Gulf-Wyer 917K towed in by a Volkswagen transporter, no less.
Grouped by generation and genre, the Werks Reunion 2015 had plenty to offer to the Porsche enthusiast, whether you’re interested in perfectly correct 356s or you fancy a well-built ‘Outlaw’ hot rod. Comparable to the inaugural event, the overflow parking area proved to be a show in itself with hundreds of show goers in attendance with their own Porsches helping represent the Stuttgart brand.
The 2015 edition of the Porsche Werks Reunion whet the appetite for the Northern California Porsche crowd until Rennsport Reunion V in September.

A 1924 Isotta Fraschini Tipo 8A won Best of Show at the Pebble Beach Concours d' Elegance.
The car is owned by Jim Patterson of Louisville, KY. He happens to be the founder of Long John Silver’s restaurants.

New Exotic and Concepts on the lawn in front of the Lodge
And Hundreds of Millions of dollars in Vintage and Classics on the Field
28
Now into its 65th year, the Pebble Beach Concours d ’Elegance is now a not-to-be-missed event for car
collectors and enthusiasts alike in order to attract people to a very specific destination. Back in 1950,
however, the event wasn’t quite enough of a draw by itself.
In 1950, enthusiasts wanted to entertain spectators with a weekend filled with events, and planned both
a Pebble Beach road race and a Concours d ’ Elegance for the first year. The race attracted the crowds,
and the concours kept them entertained in between heats.
Both events ran together until 1956, after a driver’s death prompted the road racing community to gath-
er $1.5 million in donations and construct the Laguna Seca circuit in time for the 1957 event, where the
racing events have been held since.
You may not know that the Pebble Beach Concours d ’Elegance, in keeping with tradition, initially al-
lowed new cars to compete in concours judging, which led to the first winner in 1950 being a brand -new
American aluminum-bodied sports car called the Edwards R-26 Special Sport Roadster. Its creator,
Sterling Edwards, was one of the few men who had a hand in organizing the first event.
As road racing was still an up-and-coming sport in America in the early ’50s, organizers needed both
vehicles and a venue. The vehicles were easy to find, but a venue would only reveal itself after Del
Monte was enticed to use some of the roads it owned near what we now called the Lodge at Pebble
Beach, an exclusive hotel built in 1919. It was hoped that the concours and “Del Monte Trophy” racing
events would attract well-to-do clientele to the region—and it worked.
A Quick History of Cars in Pebble Beach
29
Over the next few years, new (and nearly new) Jaguars were often a big part of both events, winning
both the road race and a few years of the concours. Perhaps oddly, the concours was dominated by
nearly new cars until 1955.
One of the earliest—and largest—supporters of the events was Phil Hill, who won the first Pebble
Beach road race in a Jaguar XK120, and later picked up a Best In Show trophy at the Pebble Beach
Concours d’Elegance in 1955 with his 1931 Pierce-Arrow 41 LeBaron Convertible Town Cabriolet.
The Pierce-Arrow set off a few decades of Pre-War classic domination at the concours. Since 1955,
only two cars newer than 1950 have won Best In Show, a 1964 Maserati Mistral in 1968 and a 1954
Ferrari 375 MM Coupe by Scaglietti in 2014.
What has made the event so successful for more than 60 years is that it quickly became the de facto
place for Pre-War car enthusiasts to gather and appreciate the beauty and craftsmanship of their more
stately vintage vehicles. With the sports car races spun off to run at a dedicated facility, there was also
more of an opportunity for each event to begin to attract different crowds.
As with any large concours, the joy of Pebble Beach is not necessarily the Best In Show winner, but the
field of vehicles that don’t win. With 25 judging classes in 2015 from Mercury customs, to British
Pre-War sports cars, to open wheeled race cars, there ’s something for everyone.
Here, tradition and excellence are important to all attendees, and for nearly its entire history, Pebble
Beach has attracted the world’s foremost racing drivers, collectors, and enthusiasts, which help to
ensure that when you’re on the green at Pebble Beach, you’ll never be too far from greatness.

Monterey Week Auction Recap:
Preliminary Sales Total $392 million
Monterey Car Week is over, and the last gavel has dropped, but auction companies continue to bring to-
gether buyers and sellers behind the scenes. Here are the preliminary numbers that have been confirmed
so far:
RM Sotheby's reported Monterey sales exceeding $172.7m — an increase of 20% over last year's Monte-
rey totals, and the highest-grossing collector car auction of all time. A 1964 Ferrari 250 LM (pictured) was
the most expensive car of Monterey Car Week at $17.6m.
Preliminary sales at Gooding & Company's Pebble Beach auction totaled $128m, up 21% from last year.
Gooding sold 115 of 129 cars and achieved a sales rate of 89%. The top sale was a 1961 Ferrari 250 GT
LWB California Spyder, sold at $16.8m.
A 1959 Ferrari 250 GT Competizione Alloy coupe sold for $8.5m at Bonhams Carmel, earning high-sale
honors. Preliminary sales at Bonhams totaled $46.7m, down 57%. More than 100 cars crossed the block,
and the final sales rate was 90%. View all the sold cars here.
At Mecum Monterey, top honors went to a 1969 Lamborghini Miura P400 S at $2.3m, and combined totals
came to $45m, up 30%. View the Mecum results here.
Significant sales at Russo and Steele Monterey included a 2005 Porsche Carrera GT at $781k. Russo and
Steele, Rick Cole Auctions and JR Auctions continue to finalize post-block sales and have not released offi-
cial results.
The numbers so far total $392m. That figure will grow in the coming days as auction houses finalize their
results. Last year the combined total for all Monterey sales was $464m.
31
Monterey 2015 will go into the books as an undoubtedly important event in the current market cycle. For the first time since
2009, there was no year-over-year gain in the total, and the full significance of that (both real and psychological) likely
won’t be completely understood until well into 2016. For the moment, this much is apparent: The long-awaited stabilization
in the market appears to be under way, albeit not unambiguously.
If Monterey were represented by just two auction houses, RM and Gooding, we wouldn’t be discussing the concept of
stabilization quite as loudly, as both RM and Gooding were up massively, about $45 million between the two of them with
only about 15 more cars brought to market between the two auctions. Sell-through rates were pretty close to the same as
in 2014, as were averages realized and the value of unsold lots (well over $100 million). Most tellingly, the amount of value
in unsold lots was nearly double what it was in 2013. This lends some credence to the notion that the actual peak of the
market in terms of momentum was Monterey 2013 and that the results of 2014 and 2015 can possibly be assigned to
dialed-in owners timing sales before the realization that the upward momentum of the market was petering out became
common knowledge.
More recent cars, however, continue to climb. Post-Enzo cars like the F40, 288 GTO — and even more common cars like
the 550/575, 308/328 and Testarossa — continue to be in significant demand, with the latter two models nearly doubling in
price year over year. The more than $13 million realized by RM for the McLaren F1 was a stunning but not unexpected
result. The notion that the fourth most valuable car sold all weekend isn’t even old enough to vote, let alone legally drink, is
something to wrap one’s head around. Or try this one on for size: The Mercedes 300SL Gullwing, the gold standard of
collectible post-war European sports cars, is being eclipsed in value by the Porsche 959, a technical tour de force that is
not yet 30 years old. The strength of newer cars isn't limited to the highest priced models, either, as Bonhams sold a 1989
BMW M3 for $96,250. If the current stabilization morphs into a downturn in 2016, these modern classics will be interesting
cars to watch. Time may ultimately be on their side, but it will be interesting to see if that time truly is now or if it’s 10 or 15
years into the future.
32
The Monterey Sports Car Auctions Each year hundreds of million dollars of collector cars are traded at Monterey in August. And although Ferrari has
been stealing the auction headlines for the last few years in Monterey, Porsche has been coming on strong as well.
Excellent news for all of us Porsche enthusiasts. Over the next few pages you will see some very encouraging prices
that are being realized for these exciting German sports cars.
