SECTION 10425 INTERIOR SIGNAGE AND EXTERIOR SPECIALTY SIGNS
PART I - GENERAL
1.01 DESCRIPTION
A. Scope: Work under this Section shall include all necessary services, labor, materials and product to fabricate and install all sign and /or graphic items included in the documents which consist of Design Drawings, Specifications, Signage Schedule and Location Plans.
B. The UCDHS Sign Standards documents for Interior and Exterior Specialty signs are located at the end of this section. These Sign Standards include graphic standards, all sign types and specifications. The Sign Standards shall be followed unless directed otherwise by the University’s Representative.
C. Design Consultants shall be responsible to provide a floor and/or site plan that identifies code compliant sign requirements and location utilizing these campus standard sign types. (omit text- or approved MUTCD Regulatory Signs. )
D. Design Consultants shall be responsible to provide a coded Signage Schedule identifying sign type, quantity, text and graphics required for each sign that correlates to the floor and/or site plans. (omit text -. In addition, the Design Consultants shall provide floor and/or site plans that correlate to the Signage Schedule. )

1.02 CONDITIONS AND GENERAL REQUIREMENTS
A. Engineering and Code Requirements: For any sign located in the hospital and weighing over 20 pounds the Design Consultant or University’s Representative shall provide an OSHPD approved attachment detail. The sign attachment needs to match the attachment detail exactly, no deviation will be allowed or the sign will need to be removed.
1.03 SUBMITTALS
A. General:
1. FOR ALL INTERIOR, EXTERIOR SPECIALTY AND DONOR (Consultant to omit “Donor” signs if not applicable to the project) SIGN TYPES
2. Refer to the Sign Standards, Section 5, Part 1.03, for instructions regarding signage submittals.
3. Also, submit the following in accordance to the Conditions of the Contract and Division 1 Specification Sections.
4. Submit all Submittals to the University’s Representative unless directed otherwise by the University.

1.04 QUALITY ASSURANCE
A. Sign Fabricator Qualifications: Firm experienced in producing signs similar to those indicated for this Project, with a record of successful in-service performance, and sufficient production capacity to produce sign units required without causing delay in the Work.
B. Single-Source Responsibility: For each separate sign type required, obtain signs from one source of a single manufacturer.
1.05 PROJECT CONDITIONS
A. Verification of Existing Conditions and Documents: Sign Contractor shall visit the Site to inspect all existing conditions and to verify all dimensions which are related to the fabrication and/or installation of sign or graphic items. Sign Contractor shall thoroughly review these documents, checking conditions and dimensions shown. Notify University's Representative of any discrepancies in the documents. Written dimensions shall have precedence over scaled dimensions.
PART II - PRODUCTS
2.01 FINISHES
A. Refer to Sign Specifications, Section 5, Part 2
B. Surfaces of all items requiring a painted finish shall be properly prepared. Tool marks and other imperfections shall be filed and sanded or buffed. Surfaces must be cleaned before applying paint by removing chalk, dust, dirt, grease and oils. All pretreatment and primer provided in accordance with manufacturer’s recommendation. Sufficient primer coats or undercoats shall be applied to achieve a smooth and uniform surface. All painted items shall be spray-painted in a dust free booth, following the paint manufacturer’s recommendations concerning thinning and application. Apply additional coats when undercoats, stains or other conditions show through the color coat of paint, until paint is of uniform finish, color and appearance. All paint finishes must be allowed to dry and cure

PART III - EXECUTION
3.01 INSPECTION
A. Refer to Sign Standards, Section 5, Part 3.01, Execution.
B. For any sign in the hospital that weighs over 20 pounds and requires an OSHPD approved attachment detail an inspection or inspections will be required. The contractor will request the inspection with an Inspection Request as described in Division 1. Concealed attachment points should be inspected prior to the final signage materials being installed.
3.02 PREPARATION
A. Refer to Sign Standards, Section 5, Part 3.02 Preparation
3.03 INSTALLATION
A. Refer to Sign Standards, Section 5, Part 3.03 Installation
B. Sign Installation: Shall be carried out in a neat and proper manner equal to the finest quality standards of the industry.

C. Location Drawings: Shall be followed when installing signs and graphic items. Item numbers which are found in the Graphic Schedule identify specific sign units and their locations. Drawing show general location for each sign. Specific locations shall be determined by walking the Site with the University's Representative. Contractor shall post a coded water-resistant label at each sign location during walk-through.
D. Installed Signs: Shall be clean, properly aligned, level and true to line and dimension, flush to surface or as detailed and specified, free of excess visible adhesive, if used. Damage to sign or surrounding surfaces or other imperfections will not be accepted. Any code required labels and shut-off switches to be on exterior of sign shall be concealed from normal viewing and all other labels shall be located inside the sign enclosure.
E. Pin Fasteners: Where pins or other mechanical fasteners are used, also provide silicone or epoxy adhesive to prevent unauthorized removal of signs. All fasteners, structures and units must be structurally sound and comply with all applicable codes requirement and restrictions, including state seismic regulations.
F. Protective Materials: Wrappers, covering, identifying stickers, paper etc., shall be removed from the sign at completion of installation.
G. Any signage with an approved OSHPD attachment detail the installation of the sign must match the detail exactly. Any deviation from the approved attachment detail will not be tolerated and the sign or backing plate will need to be removed upon request at no additional cost to the University.
3.04 FINAL CORRECTIVE WORK
A. Damage to signs or surrounding surfaces shall be repaired to the satisfaction of the University's Representative at no additional cost to the University.
3.05 CLEANING AND PROTECTION
A. During the process of work, remove daily all discarded materials, rubbish, cans, rags, etc., from the Project site.
B. Upon completion of paint work, clean or repaint all paint splattered signs and adjacent surfaces. Remove splattered paint by proper methods of washing and scraping, using care not to scratch or otherwise damage finished surfaces.
C. At completion of installation, clean all sign surfaces in accordance with manufacturer's instructions. Protect units from damage until acceptance by the University's Representative. Repair or replace damaged units as directed by the University's Representative at no additional cost to the University.
1. Check all items for correct placement.
2. Remove all packing material and debris from the site and leave premises in clean condition.
3. Take special precautions to protect finishes.
4. Clean sign material using only cleaners and methods in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions.

3.06 GUARANTEE
A. All Product and Work shall be guaranteed for one (1) year from acceptance against cracking, crazing, peeling, blistering, delamination and other defects in material and/or workmanship.
B. All vinyl shall be guaranteed for five (5) years.
C. Furnish a one (1) year warranty, warranting that the paint finishes will not develop non-uniformity of color or fading and will not crack, peel, pit, corrode or otherwise fail as a result of defects in material or workmanship within the following defined limits. Upon notification of such defects, within the warranty period, make necessary repairs or replacement at the convenience of the University.
1. Fading: A change in appearance which is perceptible and objectionable as determined by the University's Representative when visually compared with the original color range standards.
2. Non-Uniformity: Non-uniform fading to the extent that adjacent panels have a color difference greater that the original range of color.
3. Will Not Pit or Otherwise Corrode: No pitting or other type of corrosion, discernible from a distance of 10’, resulting from the natural elements in the atmosphere at the project site.

SPECIFICATIONSPART I - GENERAL
1.01 SUMMARY
A. Provide graphics complete as shown and specified in the “UC Davis Health System Donor Signage Guidelines”, on Contract Documents; including (but not necessarily limited to): 1. Exterior Signage. 2. Interior signage
1.02 SYSTEM DESCRIPTION
A. The Contractor is responsible for the fabrication of all components and materials, and the installation of all signage.
B. Fabricate and install signage to comply with ADA Standards, to comply with code requirements including Title 24, to span between structural supports as indicated, to withstand normal loads from gravity, impact and use, without failure, including breakage or deterioration of materials.
C. Structural Properties: 1. Deflection: a. General: Under maximum wind load pressure; do not exceed following overall span deflections. b. Normal to Sign Plane: L/175 or ¾”, whichever is less. c. Parallel to Sign Plane: L/360 or 1/8”, whichever is less.
1.03 SUBMITTALS
A. General: 1. Schedule: Submit shop drawings, product data and samples as noted. Schedule for Submission of Shop Drawings, Product Data and Samples with such promptness to cause no delay in Signage Work or Work of other contractors. Sign Fabricators shall make submittals through Owner’s representative. NO extension time will be granted because of failure to make submittals in ample time to allow for processing.
2. Identification: Properly identify each submittal with name of Project, Contractor, Subcontractor and date. Accompany each submittal by an acceptable transmittal form referring to Project name, Specifications section number and paragraph number when applicable, for
identification of each item. Consecutively number shop drawings for each section of Work; retain numbering system throughout all revisions. Allow clear space on each drawing and sample for Contractor’s and Graphic Designer’s stamp. Where clear space is not available on samples, submit with tags or stickers attached.
3. Contractor’s Responsibility: a. Stamp shop drawings, product data and samples with Contractor’s stamp certifying it has been coordinated and checked by Contractor for completeness and compliance with Contract Documents. Clearly note proposed deviations from Contract Documents on submittals. Contractor responsible for quantities and dimension shown on submittals. b. Exterior general contractor should recommend any deflection criteria regarding spanning elements and anchorage for exterior signage.
B. Owner and Owner’s Representatives Review: 1. General: Except for finish, color and other aesthetic matters left to the Owner and Owner’s Representatives decision by Contract Documents, review of shop drawings, product data and samples is only for Owner’s convenience in following work and does not relieve Contractor from responsibility for any deviations from requirements of Contract Documents. Do not construe the review as a complete check nor relief from responsibility for errors of any sort in shop drawings or schedules, or from necessity of furnishing Work required by Contract Documents which may not have been shown on shop drawings. The review of a separate item does not indicate review of complete assembly in which it functions.
2. Submittals: Not stamped by Contractor, and submittals which in the reviewers opinion are incomplete, contain numerous errors or have not been checked or have only been checked superficially, will be returned for resubmittal. a. Processing: Architect, Owner and Owner’s Representatives will review shop drawings, product data and samples with reasonable promptness and will return them to Contractor with Owner and Owner’s Representatives stamp applied thereto. Notations by reviewer which change contract or time of completion shall be brought to Owners attention before proceeding with Work. Each submittal will be stamped indicating appropriate action as required.

C. Product Data: Submit manufacturer’s, fabricator’s and finisher’s specifications, installation and maintenance instructions.
D. Shop Drawings: Show in detail, materials, dimensions, thickness’, methods of assembly, attachments, relation to adjoining Work, and other pertinent data and information. 1. General: Show fabrication and attachment details. 2. Typography: Complete alphabet; each typeface specified. 3. Patterns: Full size; each sign type. 4. Logos: Full size; each design.
E. Samples: Submit two (2) of the following listed samples; additional if specifically requested. 1. Materials: a. Acrylic: 6” x 6” piece in thickness and color specified. b. Adhesives and Tapes: Each type used. c. Fasteners: Each type used. d. Glass: 12” x 12” piece in thicknesses specified. e. Metals: 6” x 6” piece in thickness and color specified. f. Paint: 6” x 6” brushout of each color specified, including clear coat. g. Laminates: 6” x 6” piece in color specified. h. Vinyl Letters: Logo and typeface as specified. 2. Fabricated Items: a. One each sign type, may be used for production if acceptable. 3. Mock-ups: a. TBD on a project by project basis.
1.04 DELIVERY, STORAGE AND HANDLING
A. Delivery: Coordinate delivery with Owner’s Representative. Deliver fabricated units and component pieces to Project completely identified per installation drawings. Inspect Work for damage upon delivery to site.
B. Storage: Coordinate storage with Owner’s Representative. Store components and materials in clean, dry location. Protect from damage until installation.
C. Handling: Handle signage on site at a minimum; exercise care to avoid damaging surfaces.
1.05 SCHEDULING
A. General: Coordinate with Owner’s Representative to assure other trades affected by Work are performed in proper sequence. Furnish setting templates, layouts, anchors, fasteners and other built-in items as required to cause no delay.
B. Contractor shall submit a schedule of submittals, fabrication and installation with bid response and shall maintain/update such schedule throughout the progress of the contract as requested by Owner.
PART 2 - PRODUCTS
2.01 FINISHES
A. Non-glare with fine sanded edges.
2.02 COPY

3.01 INSPECTION
A. General: Examine surfaces and construction. Give written notice of conditions adversly affecting installation, preformance and quality of Work. Do not proceed until conditions are satisfactory.
3.02 PREPARATION
A. Field Measurements: Coordinate onsite visits with Owner’s Representative. Obtain dimensions for Work to meet Project conditions.
3.03 INSTALLATION
A. General: Install graphics plumb, level and true. Align with adjacent Work where shown. Follow location drawings when installing signage and graphics.
B. Provide all necessary anchors and fasteners where necessary for securing graphics in place; including threaded fasteners for concrete and masonry insets, toggle bolts, through bolts and other connectors as required.
C. Form tight joints with exposed connections accurately fitted with uniform reveals and spaces for sealants and joint fillers. Where cutting, welding and grinding are required for proper shop fitting and jointing of the Work, restore finishes to eliminate evidence of such corrective Work.
D. Do not cut or abrade finishes that cannot be completely restored in the field. Return items with such finishes to shop for required alterations, followed by complete refinishing or provide new units at Owner’s option.
3.04 CLEANING
A. General: Remove smears, spots, and other markings. Do not use alkaline or abrasive cleaning agent. B. Clean all existing architectural finishes, furniture or adjacent areas of any dirt and debris resulting from installation.
3.05 PROTECTION
A. Protect finishes of signage and graphics from damage during construction period by use of temporary protective covering
B. Restore finishes damaged during installation and construction period so that no evidence remains of correction Work. Return items which cannot be refinished in the field to the shop; make alterations and refinish entire unit, or provide new units as required.
C. Existing Construction- Protect furniture, architecture and finishes from any damage which could result from installation of signage and graphics.
D. Should damage occur to the existing construction, Contractor shall be responsible for such damage. Owner shall have the right to elect to have Contractor correct damage or to correct the damage/work and withhold cost from contractor’s payment.
3.06 GUARANTEE
A. All products shall be guaranteed for one (1) year against cracking, peeling, blistering, delamination and other defects in material and/or workmanship.
