Live from New york
Composer Modeste Mussorgski Production Stefen Wadsworth Conductor Sebastian Weigle
Cast René Pape (Boris Godounov), David Butt Philipp (Grigory), Maxim Paster (Shuisky), Aleksey Bogdanov (Shchelkalov), Ain Anger (Pimène), Ryan Speedo Green (Varlaam)
Boris Godunov, Tsar of Russia, seized power under opaque circumstances which disturb his serenity. Learning from the monk Pimenes of the terrible actions carried out by the sovereign to gain access to the throne, the novice Grigori decides to provoke fate and undertakes to overthrow the Tsar by posing as the legitimate contender for the crown. Mussorgsky's masterpiece offers a formidable portrait of the tormented Tsar torn between startling ambition and paralyzing paranoia, embodied by bass René Pape. Conductor Sebastian Weigle conducts this pillar of the Russian repertoire, taken up in its original version from 1869. Stephen Wadsworth's touching production poignantly captures the hope and suffering of the Russian people. Opera in one prologue and four acts, presented in Russian with French subtitles.

Fire shut up in my bones Comme un feu dévorant enfermé dans mes os
Live from New York
Composer Terence Blanchard Production James Robinson & Camille A. Brown Conductor Yannick Nézet-Séguin Cast Angel Blue (Destiny/Loneliness/Greta), Latonia Moore (Billie), Will Liverman (Charles) The youngest of five boys, Charles is very attached to his mother Billie who, in addition to working hard, has to put up with her husband's infidelities. The child thrives as best he can until the day when a traumatic event forever turns his life upside down. For the first time in the history of the Met, a work composed by an African-American is presented on its prestigious stage. By adapting journalist Charles M. Blow's memoirs for opera, jazz musician and composer Terence Blanchard reveals a profound lyrical work. In the cast, we find the soprano Angel Blue, discovered live at the cinema in Porgy and Bess during the 19-20 season, in a staging co-signed by James Robinson and Camille A. Brown. Opera in three acts presented in English with French subtitles.
Saturday
13 November 2021 – 6.25pm ARMIDA
Recorded in New York
Composer Gioachino Rossini Production Mary Zimmerman Conductor Riccardo Frizza
Cast Renée Fleming (Armida), Lawrence Brownlee (Rinaldo), Barry Banks (Gernando/Carlo), John Osborn (Goffredo), Kobie Van Rensburg (Ubaldo)
An evening to match the event: Armida first performed on the stage of the Metropolitan Opera in New York, almost two hundred years after its creation. If Rossini's dramma per musica, composed in Naples in 1817, does not appear more often in lyric theaters, in America or elsewhere, it is not because of its lower quality - on the contrary - but because it requires a cast that is almost impossible to bring together: six tenors, three of whom are at least well versed in the very perilous exercise of Rossini's song, and a soprano with an exceptional voice and dramatic temperament. Supreme role that Maria Callas, in 1952 in Florence, took to a dizzying height. On a different scale but with its own strengths, Renée Fleming offered, in 1993 in Pesaro, a striking interpretation, enhanced by the presence of suitable tenors (which Callas did not have). Seventeen years later, and without having in the meantime taken up the torch of the magician, the American singer once again takes up the challenge. We wonder about the motivations of an artist who, at the height of her fame, takes the double risk of facing a murderous score and of confronting her own ghost. We even salute the courage that presided over such an enterprise. Especially since Armida is pretty much Renée Fleming's only foray into a world foreign to her vocal nature. In 1993, the beauty of the timbre and the ardor of youth gave the change.

November 2021 – 6.25pm MACBETH Recorded in New York
Composer Giuseppe Verdi Production Adrian Noble Conductor Fabio Luisi Cast Anna Netreko (Lady Macbeth), Željko Lučić (Macbeth), Joseph Calleja (Macduff), René PAPE (Banquo)
On a deserted moor, three witches promise Macbeth an exceptional fate: he will be king. To fulfill the prophecy as much as to satisfy his wife's ambition, Macbeth assassinates his ruler and his friend. But murder calls for murder. To drown the guilt that gnaws at him and silence the ghosts that haunt him, Macbeth kills. Until the spilled blood in turn overwhelmed him. Like the original Shakespearean tragedy, the opera is all black in both subject matter and musical writing. A book about power and perdition, the plot centers on Macbeth and especially his wife, a dominant figure in the drama and for whom the composer wrote one of his finest roles as a prima donna. One of his finest but also one of the heaviest vocally, requiring from its performer both full possession of the highs of the first act and the qualities of a dramatic soprano in the fourth, especially for the famous sleepwalking scene. The entire work is built around the poisonous seduction of Lady Macbeth, a magnificent twilight figure, whose lust for power and evil might dominate the plot throughout.

Presented in a deliciously whimsical staging by Laurent Pelly and in an abridged version, Massenet's opera based on Perrault's famous tale will offer a magical break the day after New Year's Eve. RIGOLETTO
En direct de New York
Composer Giuseppe Verdi Production Bartlett Sher Conductor Daniele RUSTIONI Cast Quinn Kelsey (Rigoletto), Rosa Feola (Gilda), Piotr Beczała (le duc de Mantoue), Andrea Mastroni (Sparafucile), Varduhi Abrahamyan (Maddalena) During a costume ball, the jester Rigoletto humiliates guests who are victims of the maneuvers of the Duke of Mantua, a shameless seducer. To make him pay for his mockery, Rigoletto's enemies set out to capture his daughter Gilda, whom they believe to be his mistress. When the jester realizes he has been the target of a bad trick, he decides to take revenge with the help of the brigand Sparafucile. Taken from Victor Hugo's famous play, Le Roi d'amuse, Rigoletto helped make Verdi an essential reference in opera. The Met is hosting a new production of this ruthless tragedy, setting the action in a hushed, Art Deco 1920s Europe, which features baritone Quinn Kelsey at the helm of the cast in the imposing title role. Opera in three acts presented in Italian with French subtitles.

LE COMTE ORY
Recorded in New York
Composer Gioachino Rossini Production Bartlett Sher Conductor Maurizio Benini
Cast Joyce DiDonato (Isolier), Diania Damrau (La Comtesse Adèle), Juan Diego Florez (Le Comte Ory), Stéphane Degout (Raimbaud), Michèle Pertusi (Le Gouverneur)
Rossini's rarely heard comedy is a brilliant performance in Bartlett Sher's first Met production, with a trio of today's bel canto's biggest stars in the lead roles: Juan Diego Flórez is Count Ory, a handsome thug who finds women - all women - irresistible. Diana Damrau sings the virtuous Countess Adele and Joyce DiDonato is Isolier, the count's page, who is also in love with the countess. Jokes, misunderstandings, and sexist disguises - including knights disguised as nuns - abound in this hilarious story of deception and seduction. In Paris, Rossini, who reigns over musical life, composed his last comedy, Le Comte Ory, the penultimate opera with which he enjoyed considerable success. The persistence of the enthusiastic reception for this opera bouffe is undoubtedly due to the combination of energized music and great virtuosity, coupled with a delightful libretto written around numerous misunderstandings and drama. The sparkling, invigorating and jubilant rhythm of the score is thus based on vaudevillesque situations worthy of Feydeau, a seductive reference for an audience today. At the time of the Crusades, the lords of the land left for the Holy Land, leaving the women defenseless. This is how the sister of the Lord of Formoutiers languishes in her castle, coveted by a depraved count and a page in love. Each begins to approach the beautiful recluse, Ory by dressing up, Isolier by revealing his soul: which of the two will lead the game?

ARIADNE AUF NAXOS
ARIANE À NAXOS En direct de New York

On the program: a new opera, at the end of which will be presented a comedy as entertainment followed by fireworks. At the last minute, it was decided that the opera and the comedy would be performed at the same time. This singular work by Richard Strauss offers a judicious mise en abyme which reveals the richness of opera as an art form. The exhilarating soprano Lise Davidsen makes her Met debut as Ariadne, the mythological heroine abandoned on her island, directed by conductor Marek Janowski. Opera in a prologue and an act presented in German with French subtitles.
