San Roque San Roque
Situated high on a natural vantagepoint, between the MediterraneanSea and the Bay of Algeciras, theCadiz city of San Roque is offi-cially called the "City of Gibraltarin Exile", due to the fact it wasfounded by the Spanish Gibralta-rians who rejected to stay underBritish rule, leaving in mass. Theysettled on a hill where the SaintRoque Shrine was located, datingback to 1506. The terrain withinthe municipality is quite rough andhilly, because it is rather close tothe southernmost peaks of the Be-tico mountain range and the pre-sence of numerous streams.
San Roque has been inhabited bymany different civilisations sincePalaeolithic Age, including thePhoenicians, Carthaginians andRomans. It was the Romans whofounded Carteya, one of RomanSpain's most important citiesand its ruins, situated betweenCortijo del Rocadillo and TorreCartagena have great archaeolo-gical value and guided tours areavailable at the site.

San Roque's natural environment,marked by the mixture of Mediterra-nean and Atlantic eco-systems, is areal ecological marvel, highlights of
which are the Pinar del Rey forestand the Guadiaro River Estuary . Theformer, a 338-hectare forest, hou-ses a great variety of vegetation andwildlife and is currently the mostfrequently visited natural recreatio-nal area in the municipality, thanksto its facilities and the nature trailsavailable. The River Guadiaro Es-tuary, on the Mediterranean coast,is a 27-hectare protected area in-cluding the mouth of the river of thesame name, which is also of greatenvironmental value.
San Roque's other great wonder isits old town, declared a Collectionof Listed Monumental and Histori-cal Buildings in 1975 in recognitionof its beauty and distinctive Andalu-sian appearance. Whitewashedhouses with a multitude of wrought-iron bars guarding their windowsand balconies, exquisitely decora-ted patios, wells and bright coloursflood the steep alleyways of thetown. There are also several outs-tanding historical monuments, in-cluding the Saint Mary the CrownedParish Church (Santa María la Co-
ronada), where the statue of the Vir-gin brought from Gibraltar is wors-hipped, and the Our Lady of Visita-tion Chapel (Visitación), which hou-ses a carving of Jesus of Nazarethalso recovered from the British co-lony; the new Saint Roque Chapel,built in 1801, the Governor's Pala-ce, which dates back to the 18thcentury, and the City Hall (CasaConsistorial) located in the Plazade Armas Square.
Alameda Alfonso XI Square is oneof the most typical local sights inthe centre of San Roque City Center, together with the GeneralLacy and Calle Coronel Moscosostreets which together make thecommonly known as “Calle Mála-ga”, the main shopping area intown; Calle San Felipe has a hostof spectacular faÇades, patios andbalconies; Calle Historiador Mon-tero, together with Calle San Nico-las make up the famous stretch ofroad known as Calle de los Esca-loncitos, and Calle HistoriadorMontero, together with Calle SanNicolas which is among the mostpopular in town thanks to its pictu-resque appearance.

San Roque San RoqueEn la zona de Sotogrande, se encuentra el Club de Golf Valderrama,mundialmente famoso por haber sido la única sede de Ryder Cup en elcontinente europeo en la edición del '97, y también del Mundial patrocinadopor American Express o el Torneo Volvo Masters del 1986 hasta 1996 y del2002 hasta la fecha. Muchos consideran que San Roque es la capital europeade este deporte ya que cuenta con nueve clubes de golf, y además tres campossanroqueños están en el ranking de los 50 mejores campos de Europa:Valderrama, Real Club de Sotogrande y San Roque Club. El polo también es undeporte con mucha historia en el municipio de San Roque, desde mediadosdel Siglo XIX hasta hoy cuenta con gran tradición.
Valderrama Golf Club is situated in the Sotogrande area and is worldfamous for being the only course in Europe to have hosted the Ryder Cup‘97. It has also been used for the World Championship, which wassponsored by American Express and the Volvo Masters Tournament heldhere from 1986 to 1996 and from 2002 to the present day. Manyconsider San Roque the European Golf capital, as it already has nine golfclubs. Three of San Roque's golf courses are ranked among the fifty bestcourses in Europe: Valderrama, Real Club de Sotogrande and San RoqueClub Old Course. The sport of polo also has a long history in the SanRoque region, and has been a great tradition here from the middle of the19th century to the present day.
Caminando por sus estrechas y empinadas calles de adoquines, impregnadasdel aroma del azahar, jazmines e incienso en la Semana Santa, puedespercibir la esencia de Andalucía. Esta fiesta está declarada de InterésTurístico Nacional. En agosto visite las casetas de la Feria Real llenas dealegría y color, con cante flamenco y baile de sevillanas, porque lossanroqueños son gente amable, simpática y divertida. La Feria Real culminacon el Toro del Aguardiente que termina en la Plaza de Toros, construida en1850 e inaugurada en 1853. Por si fuera poco, el municipio de San Roquecuenta con el mayor número de ferias en la provincia de Cádiz. Cada barriadade San Roque cuenta con sus propias fiestas entre junio y agosto.
Walking along the narrow alleyways and steep cobbled streets, with the sweetscent of orange blossom, jasmine mingling with incense during Easter Week,you can really perceive the essence of Andalusia. Easter Week has beendeclared a celebration of National Tourist Interest. In August you can visit themarquees at the Feria Real (Royal Fair), full of joy and colour, with flamencosinging and Sevillana dances, and mingle with the kind, pleasant and amusingpeople of San Roque. The Feria Real ends with the Toro del Aguardiente BullRun, ending at the Bull Ring, built in 1850 and officially inaugurated in 1853.If all this was not enough, the borough of San Roque has the largest number offairs in the Province of Cadiz. Each village in San Roque has its own festivals,all of which are held between June and August.

The predominance of fish and shellfish is obvious: clams, tuna, sea bream,anchovies, prawns, dogfish, squid, baby squid, swordfish, octopus andmany more. The meats dishes served here are also outstanding, andinclude venison, pork loin and oxtail, always accompanied by succulentvegetables, pulses, greens and fruits to make your mouth water. Theseingredients have been linked throughout history to create delicioustraditional dishes such as prawn fritters, a noodle dish, San Roque-stylechicken, cold and hot gazpacho and skate in saffron sauce. While youimmerse yourself in the history of the "other Gibraltar", and get to knowthe City of Museums, you can also hop between the typical "tapas" barsscattered throughout the Old Town.
En su término municipal se encuentran algunas de las zonas naturales másimpresionantes del Campo de Gibraltar por la rica biodiversidad que encierran.Entre ellas podemos encontrar el Pinar del Rey, parque suburbano de 338hectáreas, situado en el centro de la comarca. Este paraíso forestal singulartiene una historia curiosa e interesante, data de 1800 cuando la Marinaespañola plantó árboles para suministrar madera para los barcos de guerra. LaLaguna de Torreguadiaro es un pequeño reducto natural de 2 hectáreas, entre elPuerto Sotogrande y el núcleo de Torreguadiaro. La laguna costera era un brazode la desembocadura del Río Guadiaro, de unas 38 hectáreas, que quedóseparado por cambios naturales y artificiales en el transcurso del siglo XX.
Some of the most impressive nature areas in the Gibraltar Area are foundwithin the borough, and known for the rich biodiversity which they enclose.One of these is the centrally-located Pinar del Rey (the King's Pine Forest), asuburban 338-hectare nature park. This outstanding wooded paradise has acurious and interesting historical background, dating back to 1800, whenthe Spanish Navy planted trees to provide timber for its warships. TheGuadiaro River Estuary is a 38 hectare nature spot near the river mouth. Inaddition, the Torreguadiaro Lagoon is a small natural enclave covering 2hectares between Puerto Sotogrande and the village of Torreguardiaro,which became separated from the Estuary by natural and artificial changesin the course of time in the 20th century.

Ubicada en lo alto de un miradornatural, entre el Mar Mediterráneoy la Bahía de Algeciras, la ciudadgaditana de San Roque es conoci-da como la "Ciudad donde residela de Gibraltar", ya que fue funda-da por los gibraltareños que recha-zaron la oferta británica de que-darse en sus casas y se instalaronen torno a la Ermita de San Roquepara no someterse al dominio bri-tánico en 1704.
El municipio abarca un terrenomuy accidentado debido a la cer-canía de las sierras más meridio-nales del Sistema Bético y a lapresencia de numerosos arroyos.San Roque ha estado habitadodesde el Paleolítico por diferentespueblos, entre ellos fenicios, car-tagineses y romanos, fundadoresestos últimos de Carteia, ciudadde gran importancia en laHispania romana cuyas ruinas, si-tuadas entre el Cortijo delRocadillo y Torre Cartagena, guar-dan un gran valor arqueológico yaún pueden visitarse.
Gracias a su clima de veranos cá-lidos e inviernos suaves y a susmás de 3.000 horas de sol alaño, San Roque es un destinoideal tanto para los amantes delturismo deportivo como para losque buscan el sol y la playa. El entorno natural de San Roque,marcado por la confluencia delas regiones mediterránea y
atlántica, es una auténtica ma-ravilla ecológica que tiene en elPinar del Rey y el Estuario del ríoGuadiaro sus máximos exponen-tes. El primero, un terreno de338 hectáreas que alberga unagran variedad de flora y fauna,constituye en la actualidad unode los espacios recreativos natu-rales más visitados de la comar-ca por sus instalaciones y por lavariedad de rutas que pueden re-alizarse. El Estuario del ríoGuadiaro, en el litoral mediterrá-neo, es un espacio protegido de
27 hectáreas que abarca la des-embocadura del río del mismonombre y posee también un granvalor medioambiental.
La otra gran maravilla de SanRoque es su casco antiguo, de-clarado Conjunto MonumentalHistórico Artístico en 1975 porsu belleza y aspecto netamenteandaluz. Casas de blancas pare-des en las que abundan venta-nas de rejas y balcones, patiosexquisitamente decorados, po-zos y colorido inundan las empi-nadas calles del municipio. Y asu vez, destacados monumentoscomo la Iglesia de Santa Maríala Coronada, donde se venera laimagen de la Virgen traída des-de Gibraltar; la Capilla de laVisitación, que alberga una tallade un Nazareno también recupe-rada de la colonia británica; lanueva Ermita de San Roque,construida en 1801; el Palaciode los Gobernadores, que datadel siglo XVIII o la CasaConsistorial, ubicada en laPlaza de Armas.
Entre los lugares más emblemá-ticos del centro de San Roquecabe citar la Alameda Alfonso XI,las calles General Lacy y CoronelMoscoso, que componen la co-nocida popularmente comoCalle Málaga, eje comercial dela villa; la Calle San Felipe, re-pleta de espectaculares facha-das, patios y balcones; la CalleSan Nicolás y la CalleHistoriador Montero, donde seencuentra un famoso tramo co-nocido como Calle de losEscaloncitos, la calle más popu-lar de San Roque por su pinto-resco aspecto.
