Vol. IXIssue I
January-June 2012
Just ten short months ago, we were selected to serve as the Nevada FFA Association’s 2011-2012 State FFA Officers. We immediately started our year by choosing our theme, “Go For The Gold,” and set-ting a few goals. Since then it has been a marathon year organizing events, traveling, presenting, and meeting amazing people like you. Student and adult supporters continually “Go for the Gold,” when it comes to the FFA. Thank you!
As we mentioned before, we set a few goals this year. One of them was to encourage “ag”vocacy. We want people to realize the impor-tance of agriculture and then spread the news. This fall we created a public relations plan to implement this goal. Please look forward to more updates on our website and social media outlets. See pages 5 and 8 to learn how to connect with us.
Finally, we set a goal to have one of the best state conventions this March. We invite you to experience this event with us as we recog-nize supporters and members, award students’ outstanding perfor-mances, learn from our speakers, and retire from our offices. More details can be found on pages 3 and 4.
Thank you for an amazing year. We have appreciated the opportu-nity to serve you and promote Nevada Agricultural Education. Sincerely,2011-2012 State Officers

Sue Poland, former advisor of the Carson Valley FFA chapter was hired in mid-August to take over the reins of agriculture education from the able hands of Jim Barbee. Sue was the agriculture teacher at Douglas High school from 1982-1993. During her time there, she developed a natural resource curriculum that was the first agriculture class awarded lab science credit from the University Board of Regents. The Douglas High School agriculture program was named the Region One Outstanding Program in 1992 under her guidance.
Looking for a slower pace, Sue moved to Cambridge, Idaho for 18 years, and taught in a school with about 50 students. During her tenure there, the Cam-bridge FFA chapter was named a three star National Chapter award winner sev-
enteen times. They also earned recognition as a Model of Innovation three times. Three members were named Na-tional Proficiency Award winners, and she coached a national winning team in Environmental Science and Natural Resources in 2011.
Sue is looking forward to working with Nevada agriculture educa-tion and the FFA Association.
In her spare time, Sue enjoys spending time in the outdoors, usu-ally with a fishing pole or mushroom basket in hand, and one of her four dogs at her side.
Students in agriculture education will have some new opportu-nities in their programs of study when all of the new standards come on board. Agriculture will have strands in Agriculture Mechanics, specializing in Ag Fabrication, Structures or Pow-er Systems. Animal Science will include animal science, vet-erinary science and equine science. The Plant Systems path-way will have new options in Floriculture, Landscape Design and Management to go along with existing Greenhouse Man-agement /Ornamental Horticulture options. A new strand in Environmental Management is under development. Other existing pathways include Agribusiness, Natural Resource Management and Communications, Leadership and Policy.
To make this happen, Nevada agriculture teachers are donat-ing countless hours to write challenging curriculum that will meet today’s employers’ needs. When the revisions are fin-ished, students in agricultural education will be prepared to seek further education or employment in the wide variety of fields found in agriculture.
