CROSSROADS NEWSLETTER
Crossroads DeadlineThe deadline for Crossroads is the 15th of every month. Per the SPRC Committee this is
an absolute deadline, and nothing will be accepted after
this date.
Friends and Family of Mount Olivet UMC,
Beginning March 1st, we will enter into the liturgical season of lent. This is normally considered a season of darkness and gloominess. In part because it starts with a reminder that we are not God! Rather, we are mere creatures who came from dust and we shall return to dust. In this stark reminder that death comes to us all we are reminded that there is only one person who has defeated death and overcome the grave. While this gives us up, we are also called to participate in the death and resurrection of Christ. Lent then is the period whereby we die to ourselves and invite God move among us.
The season should remind us that we are deeply in need of a savior. It is period of self-reflection as we prepare to greet the risen and holy God on Easter Sunday. We can’t greet Christ with open arms unless we make room in our souls for the transformative work of God’s Spirit. This is what the season of lent is all about – that through prayer, through denouncing the fleshly thinking, through the repenting of sins, and most importantly through fasting we might create space to invite God anew into our lives! So that come Easter we might come to experience the transformational power of God.
The season of Lent is a forty-day season, not counting Sundays – it is a somber season, but it is also an important season for our spiritual growth – especially if we take it seriously and are moved into a constant state of self-reflection. Dear brothers and sisters in Christ: the early Christians observed with great devotion the days of our Lord's passion and resurrection. If they considered this practice to be important then we should too! During this season converts to the faith were prepared for Holy Baptism. It was also a time when persons who had committed serious sins and had separated themselves from the community of faith were reconciled by penitence and forgiveness, and restored to participation in the life of the Church. In this way the whole congregation was reminded of the mercy and forgiveness proclaimed in the gospel of Jesus Christ and the need we all have to renew our faith.
I pray that this season of lent will be a time where we stop speaking and instead let us be a people who listen, reflect and hear as God calls us into deeper relationship with God and with others. I want to challenge you to fast from something – maybe it is Facebook, maybe it is buying a cup of coffee from Starbucks, maybe it is living in a state of worry. In place of the time spent on Facebook or worrying spend time in prayer and in place of the money spent at Starbucks offer it as a gift to God’s church. Give up something not to deprive yourself but so that you might offer more of yourself to God.
Sisters and Brothers - I invite you, therefore, in the name of the Church, to observe a holy Lent: by self–examination and repentance; by prayer, fasting, and self–denial; and by reading and meditating on God's Holy Word.
Blessings,
Pastor Tim
