MODULE 4 LESSON 8X & Y INTERCEPTS
WHAT DOES INTERCEPT MEAN?
In football:The path of the defender crosses the path of
the thrown football.
In math:What are the x- and y-intercepts?
WHAT ARE THE X- AND Y-INTERCEPTS?
The x-intercept is where the graph crosses the x-axis.
The y-coordinate is always 0.
The y-intercept is where the graph crosses the y-axis.
The x-coordinate is always 0.
FINDING INTERCEPTS To find the x-intercept, substitute in 0 for y
and solve for x
2x+y=6
To find the y-intercept, substitute in 0 for x and solve for y
2x+y=6
USING INTERCEPTS TO GRAPH A LINEPROBLEM 1 CONTINUED Graph the line with an x-intercept of 3 and a
y-intercept of 6. The x-intercept is 3, so we have the point (3, 0)The y-intercept is 6, so we have the point (0, 6)
FIND THE X- AND Y-INTERCEPTS
x+1= y
To find the x-intercept, substitute in 0 for y:
To find the y-intercept, substitute in 0 for x:
USING INTERCEPTS TO GRAPH A LINEPROBLEM 2 CONTINUED Graph the line with an x-intercept of -2 and
a y-intercept of 1.The x-intercept is -2, so we have the point (-2, 0)The y-intercept is 1, so we have the point (0, 1)
YOUR TURN!Find the x- and y-intercepts of the
equation. Then graph the line using the intercepts.
1. 4x – y=3
2. 6x+3y=18

In order to prepare for an upcoming snow storm, Jane went to rent some movies and video games. Movies cost $4 each to rent, and video games cost $2 each. Jane spent $20 renting movies and games. The equation that represents x number of movies, and y number of video games is 4x+2y=20.1. What are the x- and y-intercepts?
2. Graph the line using the intercepts.
3. What do the x- and y-intercepts represent for this problem?
