SummaryDuringastorm,unprotectedwindowglasscanbebrokenbyhighwindsandwindblowndebris.Oncepenetrated,windowanddooropeningsallowrain,debris,andwindintothehomecausingdamage.Windcanraiseinteriorpressuresignificantlyandmajorstructuraldamagemayoccur.Theroofmaydetachfromthestructureandleavethehomeopentoweatherconditionsandfurtherdamage.Onemethodofprotectingwindowopeningsistoinstallpermanentimpactresistantshutters.Theinstallationofpermanentimpactresistantshuttersisthemostreliablemeansofprotection;however,thereareothermethodswhichincludeusingtemporarywoodorimpactresistantpolycarbonatecoversorreplacingexistingwindowswithimpact-resistantwindows.Permanenthurricaneshuttersmaybeinstalledatanytimebecausewindowsareeasilyaccessiblefromtheexteriorofahouse.Precutshuttersofmetalorimpactresistantpolycarbonatecanbepurchasewiththetracksforinstallationpermanentlymountedonthehome.Whenneeded,theshutterscanbequicklyinstalledusingafewsimpletools.Costwillvarybydesignandfeature,butexpecttopaymorethanthecostofreplacementwindows—upto$50persquarefootforoperablepermanentshuttersthatareimpactrated.Shuttersshouldhavethecapabilityofbeingopenedandclosedfromwithinthehouse,withoutelectricalpower,inordertoprovidemaximumbenefit.Consultwithyourcontractoraboutthisandothersafetyfeaturesthatcanbeincorporatedinyournextremodelingproject.
