ROOSEVELT TIMES Roosevelt High School, Sioux Falls, SD
(605) 362-2860 Volume 25, Edition 9
April, 2017
Rider Remarks By Tim Hazlett, RHS Principal
There is always a sense of rejuvenation with the onset of Spring. It is something that you
can sense at Roosevelt High School as we begin the fourth quarter of school and look forward to
graduation and of course, summer time. We have made it through the challenging winter months
and looking ahead. At RHS the Spring activities are underway and the focus on academic
achievement is ongoing.
This month is a very important academic month for many reasons, but one major reason is
that we will be administering state mandated testing to our 11th graders. This means that we have
some different schedules on the testing days. Our 11th graders will take the Smarter Balanced Math and
English/Language arts on April 19th, 20th and 21st and then take the State Science Assessment on Tuesday, April
24th. Please make every effort to help your 11th grade student be in school on these days and well rested for their
testing! There will also be No School on April 14th and 17th for Spring Break. If you have any questions
regarding any of these dates and events please call 362-2860 at any time.
We have had a great school year to this point and look forward to the final quarter of school. Our goal is to
challenge our student learners, support them as people and prepare them for the future. We need your continued
help and support and are honored to work with all of our students at RHS. As always, please contact us with any
concerns you may have about your child's education. Enjoy April!
Data-Driven Decisions By Dr. Brian Maher, Superintendent
Just as data is at the heart of every good decision made by the nation’s top businesses, so
too must data be at core of most decisions made by school districts. April marks an opportunity
for schools to collect academic improvement data and for families to benchmark their child’s
growth.
Smarter Balanced is South Dakota’s measure of academic growth. It is a norm-referenced
test used across the country to ensure that schools in our state are performing as well, or better,
than schools in another state. The valuable data collected from this standardized test helps educational leaders
determine in which subject a student excels and in which subject additional support is needed.
While the annual tests are an important tool to ensure educational delivery is consistent across the United
States, one drawback of Smarter Balanced is that student scores are not immediately available. In fact, sometimes
scores do not become available until just before the next school year begins, making it difficult for schools to
adjust curriculum to meet student needs.
Enter a new tool called the MAP Assessment. MAP stands for Measure of Academic Progress. This tool is
not standardized, but the questions change based on the student’s response to the previous question. As part of the
FY18 Budget Recommendation, the Sioux Falls School District is planning to expand a pilot and use the MAP
assessment in all elementary grades. The MAP provides immediate feedback to teachers and helps students and
their parents set goals for future learning. The MAP is an excellent example of the power of data-driven decision-
making.
This is not to say all decisions must be based on data. When it comes to students and families, some of the
best decisions are made with data serving only as a guide and with common sense serving as the driving factor. It
is a delicate balance, to be sure. However, the Sioux Falls School District is committed to finding that balance in
the best interest of the 24,000 students we are privileged to welcome into our schools each day.

Library and computer lab hours – 7:00 AM to 4:30 PM
Celebrate National Library Week
April 9th through 15th Roosevelt High School
Library joins thousands of other school, academic,
and public libraries in communities nationwide in
celebrating the many ways libraries are
transforming their communities every day through
the services and the invaluable expertise they
offer.
Students’ lives are transformed daily by school
libraries. Research has demonstrated a strong,
positive relationship between student achievement
and the school library as well as a direct
correlation between well-staffed, well-stocked
libraries and student test scores. Students fare
better academically when they have up-to-date
print and electronic resources in their library,
which support and complement the school
curriculum and foster students’ imaginations
through the availability of interesting, fun and
challenging reading material.
Roosevelt High School Library is an exciting place.
Students are researching, reading, learning and
growing every day. The shelves are stocked with
interesting fiction and non-fiction books and
students are taking advantage of the opportunity
to check out books and read, as shown by the
twenty-five thousand books, which have been
circulated this year.
