McKinney Junior Chef Competition
This February, the Child Nutrition Department of McKinney ISD will be hosting a Junior Chef Competition. The goal of this competition is to provide students with the opportunity to use their recipe development skills and knowledge of healthy food choices as they create a one-of-a-kind recipe to be featured in McKinney ISD elementary school cafeterias. Students enrolled in kindergarten through fifth grade at McKinney ISD are eligi-ble to participate in this competition. Students should enter this competition as individuals. Each student will submit a one-of-a-kind recipe, a “why my recipe is healthy” summary, and a picture of their recipe.
One-of-a-kind Recipe
Each student will submit their recipe on the attached Recipe Template. Items needed on the template include ingredients, ingredient measures, directions, preparation time, and serving size. Students are encouraged to be as creative as they like but to remember, this competition is about health too!*
“Why my recipe is healthy” After the recipe has been developed, each student must answer “why my recipe is healthy.” This can be done in a short paragraph and with the help of an adult if needed. Each school that has student participation will have one winner chosen by the Child Nutrition Department. Winners will be chosen based on crea-tivity, incorporation of healthy ingredients, and their explanation of “why my recipe is healthy.” The winning student’s recipe will be made in the school cafeteria and served during lunch. Their explana-tion as to “why my recipe is healthy” will be published in the food-service newsletter and posted in the student’s cafeteria. All partici-pants will receive a “Kids In the Kitchen” cookbook. The winner of each campus will receive a Better Homes & Garden “Jr. Cookbook” and an Ace stuffed animal. All submissions should be turned into the student’s cafeteria manager by Friday, February 21. *Due to allergies recipes may NOT contain tree nuts or peanuts

FEBRUARY, Manatee/BlueCourtesy—showing others respect by using good manners.
Car Time – Song: “A Little Respect” - This song is easily downloadable in the Core Essentials store at http://www.coreessentials.org/shop-1/schools/core/songs-1.html for just $1.39 a song!
Open Wide – JUST FOR FUN: Whistle a song and have everyone guess what the song is.
DISCUSSION STARTER:Did you know every culture has different ways of showing respect? And what is considered courteous in one culture might actually be offensive in another! For example, in the United States, people whistle to express happiness, but in many European countries, whistling is seen as an aggressive and negative sound. And in the U.S., people might laugh if you bowed when meeting someone instead of shaking their hand, but in many Asian countries, people bow when greeting someone. These differences may seem silly, but when you take the time to learn what someone con-siders to be ‘good manners’, you’re showing them how important you think they are.
WHAT DO YOU THINK?
Rest – K-2: Mary Louise Loses Her Manners by: Diane Cuneo; One morning, after some particularly shocking--but awfully funny--breakfast behavior, Mary Louise realizes that she has lost her manners. I’ve paid so little attention to them, she thinks, that they’ve up and run away! She has no choice but to begin a search mission. From a neighborhood restaurant to a doctor’s office, past a hot dog vendor then a street musician, and even into the library, Mary Louise tries to find her manners. Instead she ends up making more trouble everyplace she goes. Have her manners deserted her forever?
3-5: Dude, That’s Rude! by: Pamela Espeland; Kids today need manners more than ever, and Dude, That’s Rude! makes it fun and easy to get some. Full-color cartoons and kid-friendly text teach the basics of polite behavior in
Words to use and P.U. Words to avoid, why their family deserves their best manners, and the essentials of e-tiquette (politeness online). It seems like light reading, but it’s serious stuff: Manners are major social skills, and this book gives kids a great start.
Experience: Great news! Our principle is coming to YOUR house for dinner! (Ok… maybe that’s not entirely true). One night this month, just pretend our principle is coming over for dinner. Set the table. Lower the lights. Find some relaxing music. And practice using your very best manners to show respect! See if everyone can follow the guidelines below or make a fun game by giving everyone five beads (buttons, pieces of candy, tokens, etc.). Who-ever catches a family member breaking a guideline gets to take one of his or her beads. The person with the most beads at the end of dinner gets to choose dessert!
