Phasing - What is it?• Phasing allows us to view distinct time periods
within a projects life eg: Existing Demo & Proposed.
Phasing What is it?
• From simple renovations to a complex staged project. The more stages in a Project the more phases.
• This is done by setting a certain phase to everyThis is done by setting a certain phase to every component in the model.
• Each modelling component has two phase properties: phase created & phase demolished.
• Each view has a phase & a phase filter.• This method allows us to display how our project
appears during various stages of the works.• Some Companies have used Phases to construct• Some Companies have used Phases to construct

• In the default Template file, the phasing dialogue box is located in the ‘Settings’ menu, under Phases.
• Two default phases –Existing &Two default phases Existing & New construction. As mentioned the more complex a project the more Phases are required.

Phase Filters –The rules of what is displayed• A phase filter is a rule that controls the
appearance of model components in a view. It determines the phases that are displayed in a view & how they are displayed.

– By Category –Displays Components as defined in the Object styles
– Overridden –Displays components as per theOverridden Displays components as per the Graphics override tab
– Not Displayed - Not Displayed (funny that)
• To display all model components of all the phases, set the phase filter to show all. To • Show all Displays new existing demolished & p , pdisplay all model components with no graphic overrides, set the phase filter to none.
• Generally the defaults are all that are required, but you can create as many as needed
• Show all -Displays new, existing, demolished & temporary components in the current phase. Components demolished in earlier phases are no longer displayed.
• Show Demo & New -Displays demolished & new components.• Show Previous & Demo -Displays existing & demolished . but you can create as many as needed.
• What’s Temporary??? Components created & demolished in the same phase eg Hoarding.

Graphics Override Tab – How is it displayed?Graphics Override Tab How is it displayed?
• The new and improved ‘Graphics Override’ tab wooohoooo is where you determine what components will look like when you specify Overridden in the Phase Filters Tab.
• Lines: Specify the weight, color, and line pattern for projection lines and cut lines. • Patterns: Specify color, and fill pattern for surface and cut patterns, and to turn the
visibility of the pattern on or off. • Halftone: to halftone with the background color of the view. • Material: Specify the shading for shaded views and for the render appearance on the
Graphics tab• Eg Demolished components will show light grey and in a dashed demolished line pattern,
using a Phase Demo materialusing a Phase Demo material.• These override the object styles of all families and is the highest level of override.Phasing
Project Set-up –Duplication of Views• You’ve set-up your template file……Haven’t you……..If not….• Plan Views are duplicated and renamed according to required documentation. Eg Existing
Plans, Demolition Plans & Proposed Plans. We generally do this before going guns blazing

We generally do this before going guns blazing into modelling so that when actually modelling for eg existing structures we activate the existing plan and model in this as the phase settings are correct or similarly proposed works in the Proposed Plan as the New Construction phase is set.

• It is also good to duplicate 3d views rename and set phases accordingly.• The Altis View Naming convention and sort Project Browser by first two prefix’s. Note it is g j y p

Modelled Elements Phase Properties• Each modelled element within or added to a project has a Phase
Created and a Phase Demolished parameter.• Phase Created parameter indicates in which phase the element

p pwas created. The default value for this property is the same as the Phase value of the current view.
• Phase Demolished parameter indicates in which phase the element was demolished The default value for this is None Whenelement was demolished. The default value for this is None. When using everyone’s favourite tool the hammer or demolition tool, this parameter updates to the current phase of the view in which you demolished the element.The demolished element adopts the correct graphic overrides set• The demolished element adopts the correct graphic overrides set in the Phase Filters…..Nice…..
• Revit displays the elements as per these parameters when the Phase Filters are applied to the view.
• Many users get caught out by not modelling in the correct duplicated view or assigning the correct phase to an element. Don’t stress though these can be set at any time.

In a large BIM model for example Door Schedules typically lists all doors in the project, but it possible to schedule existing doors and proposed doors by creating two door schedules and applying the appropriate phase to eachappropriate phase to each.

element like a Roof??????• Using in place family voids is how.• This method is much easier than creating a part
existing roof to remain and a part existing roofexisting roof to remain and a part existing roof to be demolished.
• Also its easier if in a view set the phase filter to Show All.
• In the Modelling Tab select Create & choose the same category as the system family being demolished.
• Give this element a logical name. North RoofGive this element a logical name. North Roof Demo Void.
• Using the Void & when sketching use pick & Lock to be precise to the new works.

Advanced Demolition• But ensure the void is big enough
to cut the element• Use the Cut Geometry tool and

geometry in this phase and demolishes it.Use the Cut Geometry tool and
select the void then the system family.
• Finish Sketch.• The system family will now be made of
the two pieces in the existing Phase.

mapping the phasing from the linked file.

retained.• TIP: Phase mapping is said to be done
automatically, but use the above manual yoption if needed.
