FROM MY HOUSE
TO YOURS
Dear Parishioners,
The readings today speak of the power, courage and
strength that is given to us through faith in Jesus, such as the
strength to bear hardship for the gospel and the marvels God
can work through our faith, like a tree being uprooted and
planted in the sea. The words and images are aimed at stirring
up a flame and us. They call us into action. In response, we
may feel the urge to do something for God, to accomplish
many things on behalf of his church.
Sometimes it can be hard to feel we are making a dif-
ference. If we are involved in parish life, we may feel the push
and pull of many different elements: programs and commit-
tees, pressure to make the liturgy more engaging, the need to
increase church membership numbers, or perhaps to proclaim
the gospel in fresh and innovative ways. The weight of these
responsibilities may add up, and we can feel discouraged that
we are not make enough headway in building up the kingdom
of God.
These activities are well intended, and certainly in line
with our understanding of the gospel. So it may come as a
shock to hear these words from Jesus: When you have done all
you have been commanded, say “We are unprofitable ser-
vants; we have done what we were obliged to do.” We expect
praise, or perhaps even gratitude, from the Lord. We expect
him to appreciate our efforts, not respond in such a dismissive
tone. But then again, who are we to expect, or even demand,
anything from the Lord?
The experience of Carlo Carretto may be instructive
here. Carreto was a leader of an Italian youth movement called
Catholic Action for twenty years before and after the Second
World War. At age forty-four, he experienced a call to the con-
templative life, and responded by joining a community called
the Little Brothers in Algeria.
During his novitiate, he spent a week alone in the de-
sert in adoration of the exposed Eucharist. In his life as an ac-
tivist, he had felt responsible for bearing the weight of the
Church on his shoulders. But kneeling before the Eucharist, in
a moment of deep contemplation, he understood the truth: “I
had walked, run, spoken, organized, worked in the belief that I
was supporting something; and in reality I had been holding up
absolutely nothing. The weight of the world was all on Christ
Crucified. I was nothing, absolutely nothing. It had taken some
effort to believe the words of Jesus who had said to me two
thousand years earlier: ‘When you have done everything that is
commanded you to do, say We are unprofitable servants, be-
cause we have only done our duty.

Are you or someone you know interested in joining the Catholic
Church? Are you curious about the Catholic Faith, but not
sure you want to make a commitment? Are you married to a
Catholic spouse, raising children Catholic, and interested in
knowing more to be able to share with them? Are you a Catho-
lic who desires to complete the initiation process by receiving
Eucharist and or Confirmation? If you answered yes to any of
these questions, the R.C.I.A. may be for you.
The RCIA is designed to assist youth and adults who:
• have never been baptized, and wish to be baptized in the
Catholic Church
• have been baptized in another Christian tradition (Lutheran,
Episcopalian, etc.) and wish to become
Catholic.
• were baptized Catholic, but have not received First Eucha-
rist and/or Confirmation.
There’s no time like the present to begin your inquiry in the faith. If you are interested in learning more about the R.C.I.A.
for yourself or someone you know, please contact Maryellen
Carroll at 215-468-4777 for more information.

These words of Jesus are not unkind, they are merely
truthful. In today’s reading from the Second Letter of Timothy,
we are reminded: kindle afresh the gift of God which is in you.
Everything we have, we have received from him. He alone
bears the weight of the world. Without him, we can do noth-
ing.
God Love Ya!

From Fear to Strength By Janel Esker I’m not the world’s bravest person. When I got to college, I was delighted that I no longer had to go on roller coasters or into haunted houses to avoid my friends’ mocking for being afraid. My college buddies didn’t base our friendship on whether I went along with the crowd. I could say, “No, I really dislike roller coasters and haunted houses. See you when you get done!” It was lib-erating. Life is full of much scarier things than amusement-park rides and fake goblins. We hear the prophet Habakkuk speak of some of it in today’s first read-ing. Evil, violence, strife, destruction—add to that cancer, natural disasters, Alzheimer’s, domestic abuse, and unemployment, and sometimes it can take a lot of courage just to get up in the morning. As a person who’s more fearful than most, I take hope in St. Paul’s reminder to Timothy today: “God did not give us a spirit of cowardice but rather of power and love and self-control.” Feeling afraid is a normal human emotion, but it’s not what God wants for us, and it isn’t part of the spirit God gives us. As St. Paul reminds us, the Holy Spirit “dwells within us.” The Spirit is the source of our daily strength; the Spirit can get us out of bed when all feels lost; the Spirit helps us persist in the face of incredible challenges. Do we have faith in this Holy Spirit—faith at least the size of the minuscule mustard seed that Je-sus speaks of in Luke? If so, it’s enough. With such faith, we will experience the courage to face our fears and to trust that God is with us through them all. †
A Word From
Pope Francis
Fear and sadness cause
illness in people and in the
Church, too; they cause
paralysis and selfishness,
and in the end spoil the air of a
community.However, a Christian sus-
tained by the fear of God and by the
Holy Spirit has the courageous attitude
of joy, which in pain becomes peace.
Morning Meditation in the Chapel of the Domus Sanctae Marthae, May 15, 2015
• How does your faith offer you power when you’re afraid?
• What is one fear you would like God to help you overcome with strength and joy?
