Positive Psychology Answers…
How can we cultivate the BEST within our students?
How can we help students thrive personally and academically?
How can we increase well-being (physical, mental, etc.)?
International School Manila
Why Positivity? Negativity Bias - Brains are
hard wired for negative to help identify situations where there is danger
Evolutionary need of our ancestors
We are more motivated toward the bad than the good
Bad health has a larger impact on our happiness than good
Bad is more quickly learned than good
Growing research worldwide
Negative emotion is like Velcro to the brain. Positive is like Teflon.

What Positive Psychology is not Happy-ology A tool to eliminate negative emotions Simple positive thinking
“Positive Psychology should be just as concerned with building strength as with repairing damage.”
Dr. Martin Seligman

What Positive Psychology IS The study of what is RIGHT with people Goes beyond being simply “happy” The study of well-being What makes life worth living Supported by empirical research Flourishing is the goal!

What is resilience?
American Psychological Association defines as, “the ability to adapt well to adversity,
trauma, tragedy, threats, or even significant sources of stress” (2011)
International School Manila
Factors that contribute to resilience include Close relationships with family/friends A positive view of yourself and confidence in your
strengths and abilities The ability to manage strong feelings and impulses Good problem-solving and communication skills Feeling in control Seeking help and resources Seeing yourself as resilient (rather than as a victim) Coping with stress in healthy ways Helping others Finding positive meaning in your life despite difficult or
traumatic events

…I have a distinctly different view of school reform. The problem, I think, is not
only the schools but the students themselves. Here’s why: learning is
hard. True, learning is fun, exhilarating, and gratifying – but it is also often
daunting, exhausting, and sometimes discouraging.
Dr. Angela Duckworth, University of PennsylvaniaResearcher of GRIT!

Resilience = Immune System“A kid’s social, emotional, spiritual and intellectual muscles can shrink if they are not exercised. Vaccines expose us to a dose of the disease so our bodies learn to overcome it; exercising strengthens weakened muscles after injury. Kids must be inoculated with a dose of hardship, delay, challenges and inconvenience to build up the strength to withstand them. Only then do they develop immunity.” Dr. Tim Elmore, Founder and President of Growing Leaders

Research Academic achievement among school children is
predicted by perseverance and temperance strengths (Peterson & Park, 2009).
After controlling for IQ, strengths of perseverance, fairness, gratitude, honesty, hope, and perspective predicted GPA (Park & Peterson, 2008a).
Higher hope levels are related to greater scholastic and social competence and to creativity levels (Onwuegbuzie, 1999).

ResearchIn a study of nearly 1200 kids who wore a beeping watch leading them to write about their thoughts, feelings, and actions 8 times per day, the most curious kids were compared with the bored kids. The curious were more optimistic, hopeful, confident, and had a higher sense of self-determination and self-efficacy believing they were in control of their actions and decisions, than the bored kids who felt like pawns with no control of their destiny (Hunter & Csikszentmihalyi, 2003).

Self-Compassion Needed For Resilience Trumps self-esteem!! How can we grow if we can’t
acknowledge our weaknesses? Powerful way to achieve emotional well-being. Helps avoid destructive patterns of fear,
negativity, and isolation. Duke University Research - Students who could be
kind to themselves (as opposed to self-critical) were significantly less prone to homesickness and depression when transitioning to university.
