Research Interests
The broad nature of my research interests can be summed up under the theme of the teaching and learning of
science. This has involved a variety of topics such as mental models, effective pedagogies, curriculum design
and recently aspects of scientific literacy and the nature of science. I also have been involved in research into
cooperative education and learning experiences outside the classroom. This latter research has focused on
learning for and in the professions; science, and teaching, with an emphasis on the scholarship of teaching.
Summary of Relevant Qualifications and Experience
Holder of two doctoral degrees, PhD in chemistry Doctor of Science Education (ScEdD). Specialist researcher
in science education, and cooperative (work based) education. Research experience in technology education,
education and informal or ‘free-choice’ learning. Extensive research experience in qualitative and quantitative
means of inquiry and extensive international collaborative research experience. Recipient of international
awards for research in cooperative education. Visiting scholar, University of Cambridge. Fulbright Alumni.
Member of editorial board for numerous international journals, theses examiner and consultant. Plenary
speaker at conferences and invited speaker for National Science Foundation (NSF) Gold Standard Quality
Research in Science Literacy. Chief Editor of international handbook (2 editions) for cooperative education.
Recipient of numerous externally-funded research contracts.
Extensive university teaching experience in science, science education and education, including masters and
taught doctorates in education. Experience in teaching of educational methodologies including both
quantitative and qualitative means of inquiry. Experience in teaching by distance education and e-learning
including the use of educational technologies. Extensive experience in graduate supervision (over 30
completions).
Extensive administrative and leadership experience at departmental, school and university levels, including
strategic planning, and development of business plans. Member of numerous professional organisations in
science education and science.

1996-1999 Doctor of Education, Science Education. Curtin University of Technology, Perth,
Australia. Completed doctoral-level post-graduate papers in teaching & learning,
learning environments, curriculum design, and advanced research methodology
(average mark 92%). Thesis title “Learners’ Mental Models for Chemical Bonding.”
Thesis rated in top 10% by examiners.
