Beyond the Basics ARs have an obligation to assist
effectively without being over-involved
Reaching that fine balance is critical for a successful performance of the Official Team
CNRACNRA
6
Beyond the BasicsARs must assist when the . . .
1. Referee needs or asks for help2. Integrity of the Game demands it
CNRACNRA
7

The closer to the AR the incident occurs, the greater the likelihood for her/his involvement.
The higher the temperature of the game, the greater the likelihood for AR involvement.
Beyond the Basics
Think back a few moments ago when you were asked to write down examples of when AR
should get involved.
What did YOU write down?
Have you ever been in . . . ?

Over-Involvement1. Inconsistent Foul Assistance2. Over-Extended Area of Control3. 50-50 Calls4. Foul is near but flag is given late, after

15
If the Referee is unaware or did not have a clear view of an incident due to distance, angle or visual obstruction and needs or asks for help, and . . .
If the AR is 100% sure that an infraction or misconduct has been committed, and feels confident about being able to serve justice and protect the integrity of the game, the . . .
. . . AR should feel and must be empowered to GET INVOLVED!!!
CNRACNRA
16
SummaryIf the AR does not get involved when
needed, he / she would fail the . . .1. Referee (in particular)2. Referee Team (as a group)3. Game (as a whole)
And, most likely, impact negatively the outcome of the Game and the overall performance of the Official Team.
17
Conclusion
Assistant Referees should approach all games ready to“get involved”
CNRACNRA
18
Conclusion Referees should Introduce the topic “AR
Involvement” in your pre-game instructions.
Referee should empower and encourage your ARs to “get involved” when you and/or the game needs them.
