Group Fitness Timetables -Traffic Light System
It has long been accepted in society that green light means GO and red light means STOP. In this issue of Recreate, we are launching a new system for our Group Fitness timetable. Classes with low attendance will have a red sticker placed on them on the timetable and popular classes will be identified with a bright green sticker.
This system aims to give our valued members notice when class numbers are too low and in danger (i.e. less than 30% of capacity). Such classes will be “red lighted” and given a grace period to allow us to confirm the popularity of that class and time slot. After the period of time without considerable improvements in attendance, the class will be closed and possibly shifted to another day or another style of class.
This is a means by which members can communicate with the Fitness Centre, expressing your likes and dislikes to us by your attendance.
This system will generate awareness of the status of the Group Fitness classes and give members more opportunities to impact the timetable. The main reason that classes may be removed is because class participation is too low, making the class financially unviable to continue.
If you would like a class to stay on the timetable, all you need to do is bring along a new friend each time to the class and encourage them to stay active and healthy alongside you.

Body Step™ Finally Lands at UWAFitness Centre!
Come and experience the Les Mills Body Step™ class. Brand new to the UWA Recreation and Fitness Centre, Body Step™ is the energising step workout that makes you feel liberated and alive. Using a height adjustable step and simple movements on, over and around the step you get huge motivation from sing-along music and approachable instructors. Cardio blocks push fat-burning systems into high gear followed by muscle – conditioning tracks that shape and tone your body.
We will be launching Body Step™ into the stratosphere on Wednesday 22 July at 6pm. With new age music and moves and a funky space theme, this class is guaranteed to start 2nd semester with a big bang!
For the first week of semester there will be FREE entry to all Body Step™ classes. Classes start as of Monday 20 July and the free entry period will finish on Sunday 26 July. Monday and Tuesday we will ease everyone into the program by sticking to the basics and introducing all our members to the options within the class. Then Wednesday our team of instructors will be there in full force to rocket launch you into your next fitness journey.
Check out our new Group Fitness timetable (pg. 16+17) and get moving with Body Step!

UWA Sport Scholarship ProfileName: Alex WatsonSport: RowingCourse: Bachelor of Science - Urban and Regional PlanningD.O.B./star sign: 29 November 1989 / SagittariusHeight: 183cmFavourite movie: AnchormanFavourite food: PastaFavourite band: Status Quo
Career high: 2005 Australian Rowing Championships at Penrith – Gold in the U17 Men’s Double Scull, Silver in the U17 Men’s Single Scull and represented WA in the Penrith Cup.
Other sports: Rugby, AFL
Current club & teams: UWA Boat Club, Bunbury Rowing Club
Most admired sportsperson: Robert Harvey – amazing longevity from dedication, self motivation and discipline.
When & how did you get into your sport? My current coach at the Bunbury Rowing Club, Jamie Jones, suggested to Dad just offhand that he bring me down to the club to give it a go; they’ve both motivated me ever since (that was in 2002).
Goal in your chosen sport: Consistent high achievement (winning or coming close to medaling at national level and being a motivated and focused part of the squad)
How many hours do you train per week: 15
Favourite sports venue: Sydney International Regatta Centre at Penrith – it’s a well designed, well maintained venue
Best advice anyone gave you: In deciding whether to go for something (like Nationals), think how much you want it – if you’re just going for the ride, you won’t make it and you’ve wasted your time.
Best sporting moment (that you have witnessed or been a part of): Winning the Men’s Eight at the 2005 Youth Cup in Adelaide – we had a great crew that year in rowing on personal terms so it was pretty exciting to win it. A non-rowing one would be the Eagles’ premiership in 2006 – fantastic!
Ultimate sporting trip (real or fictional): A world rowing championship in Europe with a few weeks holiday after it to really soak up the atmosphere.
Coaches Corner - Simon TiveriosHockey Coach, Bachelor of Science and Commerce, currently completing a Masters of Sports Coaching through University of Queensland
Background & AchievementsHe is one of UWA’s most decorated Inter-University athletes having competed at 5 Australian University Games and coaching at another. Under his leadership the men’s hockey team won three championships in a row and his coaching directions got the women’s team to fourth place. A member of the UWA Hockey Club since the age of 10, Simon has moved comfortably on from his playing career into the hot seat of coaching.
Through out his senior playing career Simon always coached, an initiative encouraged by the UWA Hockey Club to have senior members involved in coaching junior teams.
Last year, Simon was appointed the Hockey Clubs State Grade Women’s Coach. The team finished third in 2007 but in 2008 the team won the competition losing only 2 matches in the regular season
After the success of last year Simon was appointed the State U/21 coach guiding the team to fourth position at the U/21 National Championships held earlier this year. He is again coaching the State Grade Women’s Team who at time of print hadn’t lost a single game after 5 rounds.
Motivation & GoalsTo see people reach their potential and admire any coach that has had sustained success over a long period of time including current Men’s Hockey coach Richard Charlesworth and Rugby League coach Wayne Bennett. Simon hopes to one day coach overseas.
