Prof Andy Doherty FREng
EU Funding
• Railway Research
• Horizon 2020 (2014 – 2021)
– In total €77B! Covers all areas of scientific endeavour
– €13B allocated to transport (about half goes to Aerospace!)
– €1B allocated to Rail to be spent/managed through Shift2Rail
– Currently EC DG RTD plan no separate addition rail specific calls in H2020. But some faint possibility on 2018 call?
• Implementation
– CEF (Connecting Europe Fund), some €30B allocated to transport UK attracts (30 -50% funding)
– TEN T funds (focussed on major) Corridors
– Various smaller Infrastructure funds (but difficult to get)

Reminder of the pro-rail vision of the 2011 Transport White Paper
→ Modal shift targets set by the EU in the 2011 White Paper:
Freight Passengers
50% of road freight
over 300km should
shift to rail or
waterways by 2050
By 2050 the majority
of medium distance
passenger transport
should go by rail
• Mid-Term Review of the 2011 Transport White Paper ERRAC
supports the ambitious environmental targets and modal shift
objectives of the 2011 White Paper that must remain in the new
text.
ERRAC is the European Technology Platform for rail. It was set up in 2001.
ERRAC aims at revitalising the European rail sector and make it more
competitive, by fostering increased innovation and guiding research efforts at
European level.
Representatives from all the major European rail research stakeholders are
gathered:
Railway operators;
Infrastructure managers;
Manufacturers;
The European Commission;
EU Member States;
Academics;
Users’ groups.
ERRAC covers all forms of rail transport: from conventional, high speed and freight applications to urban and regional services.
What is ERRAC?
The core agenda and targets
(2050)
the rail share of both the freight and
passenger markets will double
the rail freight and passenger market
volumes will more than triple as
compared with 2000
