A Note From the President
I spent the weekend in Corpus Christi, and was
amazed at the amount of damage. A lot has been
cleared away, but there are still piles of collapsed
buildings, signage, and other debris. Another item was
the bales of cotton out in the fields. A lot of the farm-
ers had harvested their cotton crops, right before that
hurricane hit. In some fields, they sit there, like a melt-
ed ice cream cone. They cannot touch them the pow-
ers that be come and put a value on them. I was talk-
ing with my farming friend, who lives here in Bell Coun-
ty, and she says that is the ups and downs of farming. I
was thinking, here are families who had hopes of mak-
ing something with this year’s crop, to have it de-
stroyed by the hurricane.
And with that I looked at the bay, and the sun shining,
and the cooler weather.
Americans are resilient, and Texans have done a lot to
help those who live on the coast. Makes me proud to
be one.
New Bylaws , Policies & Procedures
On that note, hope you are quilting up a storm. I
haven’t seen any rain clouds yet, though. I got anoth-
er little quilt finished, sewing the binding while we
traveled.
Now, if I can just finish all those other projects…….
Just a reminder: Mark your calendars. Our board
meeting will be held on November 7, 6:00 p.m. and
our monthly guild meeting will be on November 14.
Thought for the day: Don’t go batty! Use leftover
batting for packing material, when mailing something
fragile, or for storing breakables.
Happy quilting,
Mary Ann
Guild members voted on the proposed amendments to our bylaws at the October guild meeting and they were approved
by the membership. The newly amended bylaws will go into effect on January 1, 2018.
A newly created Policies and Procedures Manual and a newly created List of Activities were presented to guild mem-
bers at the October meeting and anyone with any concerns was asked to contact Louise Oldham, Mary Ann Everett, or
Cindy Moore. Both documents will be voted on at the November guild meeting.

At the October workshop Linell Mikeska showed our intrep-id Quilters how to make a Bargello quilt. Thanks so much to Linell and well done ladies, can't wait to see your crea-tions.
NOVEMBER MEETING
Our November meeting is filled with exciting happenings, so
don't miss it on Tuesday the 21st. The meeting officially
starts at 7:00 at the First United Methodist Church in Tem-
ple, but snacks are served starting at 6:30, so don't be late!
The program for the November guild meeting is our Annual
Guild Challenge, this year it is “Fabric Manipulation” and
we’re using purple fabric in it. The size of your quilt must be
between 25” and 45” on each side. If you are participating in
this challenge, please turn your Quilts in by Friday Novem-
ber 17 to either the Sewing Basket in Salado or to Temple
Quilt and Sew. If you absolutely can't turn it in until the night
of the guild meeting, please bring it by 6:00 and please notify
Kathi Dossman before hand. Just call Kathi at (254) 760-
1114 with any questions.
During the guild meeting all the Challenge Quilts will be dis-
played anonymously and all our members will be able to
vote on their favorites. Prizes for first, second, and third
place will be awarded, so make sure to enter and to vote!
Membership News
At the October guild meeting 61 members attended and
we had a whopping 10 guests! The winners of our door
prizes were Carol Fischer, Mary Wenberg, and Sarah
Stodgsdill. Thanks so much to the generous donors of
the door prizes.
Block of the month winner
Congratulations to Ruth Ellen Fise for win-
ning the October BOMs, she's sure to make
an awesome quilt from them.
HOSPITALITY
If you are a new member or just haven't managed to bring any snacks to a guild meeting this year, now is your chance! We are in desperate need of more peo-ple to sign up to bring food for the November meet-ing, so please contact Peggy Mathis at :
CHALLENGE 2018
Plans are afoot for at least 4 different challenges in
2018. There will be the annual challenge that will be
due in November, the donation challenge that will be
due in June, and two more surprise challenges. In
order to participate in any of the challenges, you
must have selected a book from the guild library
cart. As of the October meeting, 69 members had
selected books. That leaves 40+ that don't have one
yet. Please make plans to attend a guild meeting
soon and select your book. At some point, the library
will be completely dissolved and there will be no
more books. Details and rules for the coming chal-
lenges, fabric for the annual challenge and kits for
the donation challenge will be available at the Janu-
ary meeting.

Three Quilting Tips
“WE CARE” BEE
The We Care Bee (for making dona-
tion items) will meet on Wednesday,
November 1 at 9:00 a.m. at Grace
Presbyterian Church. There will be
quilt kits and batting available. We will
focus on making use of our orphan
blocks and random fabric squares (2
½” to 12 ½”) so bring any that you
want to share. Members or friends who knit and crochet
are always welcome to join the quilters, so everyone
please come join our fun and caring group.
STASH ORGANIZER
When you have cut all the re-
quired pieces for a quilt, cut the
remaining fabric into strips in
widths that you know will be use-
ful to you. Strips widths of 1½”,
2”, 2½”, and 4½” are handy siz-
es. Store the strips folded in
boxes labeled with the strip
width so that you can easily see
what you have on hand.

CROCHET YOUR SELVAGES
When you remove the selvage
edges from your fabric before cut-
ting and sewing, save the strips to
crochet into coaster, hot pads, or
floor rugs that are washable and
durable.

APPLIQUÉ DRAWINGS
Draw your appliqué block layout or master pattern on
freezer paper. Press the paper to the back of the back-
ground fabric. The design can be easily traced onto the
fabric, or you can appliquéé directly through the paper
and remove the paper after completing the block. Make
a mirror image tracing of your design if it is asymmet-
rical.

Christmas party
Cut 24 – 6” squares of 100% cotton fabric (selvages re-
moved). Stack Charm Squares by offsetting each layer by ¼
turn – (this makes it easier for us to distribute the squares).
Put the Charm Squares in a Ziploc bag with your name it,
drop the bag off at the Charm Square table before the start
of the guild meeting and remember to pick your bag up at the
end of the guild meeting. You will have a wonderful variety of
6” fabric squares to work with.

It's time to sign up for the 2018 Quilter’s Pal gift exchange! If
you want to participate in this fun and exciting exchange, you
will get the form from Lisa Martin at the October meeting and
fill it out with all your details, then turn it back in at the No-
vember guild meeting. Then at the December meeting you
will choose your Quilter’s Secret Pal from Lisa, and you will
receive the information form that your Pal filled out.
Starting in January you will be expected to bring your Pal a
small gift to each guild meeting, and you will receive a gift
from the member who has you as their Pal. If you can't at-
tend a meeting at some point, it's a good idea to send your
gift with a friend, so your Pal isn't sad about not receiving
anything, and have your friend pick up your gift.
Thanks so much to Jan Rogers, who is retiring from this po-
sition after four years, and I'm looking forward to knowing
ALL your secrets throughout the year!!!
