Patterson Rd. is a tank-trapped and gatedroad on the right. Walk 15-20 minutes, taking two blue flagged left turns till youreach the creek. Follow a rough trailseveral hundred yards downstream to the
base of the bedrock cascades to begin thesurvey.
DESCRIPTIONVoights creek is a left bank tributary to the Carbon
river entering at Carbon RM 4.0. It is currently onlysurveyed for steelhead due to the presence of a statehatchery facility at RM 0.5. The hatchery has both achinook and a coho program, making natural escapementsurveys unnecessary.
There is a falls blocking upstream migration at RM 3.4.Much of the steelhead spawning takes place from thispoint down to approximately RM 1.0. This reach containsexcellent if somewhat sporadic gravel within a moderategradient stream channel. The riparian zone is a mix of2nd growth conifer forest and hardwoods but there is a
distinct lack of large woody debris inputs; what little ispresent is generallyquite old. Belowthe hatchery water

DESCRIPTIONThe upper reaches of the White river are not surveyed with any consistency as
accurate escapement numbers are generated from the Buckley trap counts. Themain stem and West fork White are characterized by generally unconfined, oftenbraided and complex channels with abundant spawning gravels present in pool tail-outs, margins and low velocity areas. Woody debris is abundant althoughundersized; much of the riparian zone is either second growth conifer or hardwoodsexcept for the zone through Mt. Rainier National Park with consist of mostly oldgrowth.
There is approximately 5 miles between Mud Mountain dam and the Buckley trapat RM 24.3 where very little spawning takes place due to lack of fish access betweenthe two facilities. Below this however, and downstream to approximately RM 11 thereis frequent and concentrated use by both chinook and steelhead. This reach hasabundant and excellent spawning gravel. There are two significant side channels inthis reach that support spawning and rearing. One,

approximately a mile long, is located on the rightbank directly below the Shaker church access.
This channel supports both chinook and coho aswell as the highest recent documentation ofchum salmon spawning. Another, not surveyeddue to multiple debris jams blocking access, islocated several miles downstream on the leftbank. Aerial surveys have documented both
chinook andsteelheadspawning inthis reach.FromapproximatelyRM 11 downstream the channel is constrained bylevees. The channel from this point losescomplexity and there is a marked decrease in both
spawninggravel andspawningactivity of allspecies.
On April 9, 2003, the U.S. Army Corps ofEngineersrapidly reducedthe flow at MudMountain Damin the White
River so PugetSound Energycould repairtheir diversiondamdownstream at Buckley.
The result left countlessnumbers (estimatesrange from 30K to 500K)
of endangered juvenilespring chinook, wild cohoand at least one adult
steelhead stranded anddead. Puyallup tribalfisheries staff collected over300 dead fish within aquarter mile section of theriver. No disciplinary action
was taken against theUSACE or PSE.

DESCRIPTIONWrong creek is a small stream entering
Pinochle creek approximately 0.5 miles above itsconfluence with the West Fork White river.
There are small patches of suitable spawninggravel present, primarily in the lower portion ofthis reach. The riparian zone consists of mature
second growth hardwoods and conifers with anunderstory of blueberry and salmonberry.Wrong creek hosts several sizable log jamscontaining numerous key components. Low fallflow conditions appear to restrict chinookaccess. This stream was not surveyed for cohoand the chinook observed are likely returnsfrom the acclimation pond located on Cripplecreek, another tributary of Pinochle creek.
