GuideGuideTips and Trends for the Avid Golfer
If this sounds more like fantasy thanreality, you’re not alone. A recent GolfMagazine study by Pinehurst GolfAcademy found that golfers under-readputts more than 65 percent of the time. This means the slopes and angles ofgreens are giving fits to golfers acrossAmerica.
What can you do about it? Practice isa great start, but there also are manyexercises you can do to make yourself abetter green-reader and putt-striker.
I f only you had the keyto unlocking a moreconsistent putting game.
Can you imagine theconfidence in knowing youwere making perfect greenreads every time you pulledthe putter out of the bag?
PuttingTips
Once you incorporate thefollowing suggestions intoyour strategy, put them towork during your next out-ing on the course.
Take LessonsCheck in with you local
golf professional to schedulea few sessions on putting.During this instruction, youwill likely learn about yourstroke and receive a baselineassessment of your puttingapproach and alignment.
A golf pro may have ideasfor you on changing yourgrip, posture, eye position-ing and even overall mentalstate of mind. These refine-ments to your game canhave a big impact on youroverall scores.
ReLaxed GRiPThe way you grip the put-
ter is one of the most impor-tant factors in control on thegreens. Golfers use differentgrips to achieve their puttinggoals, so it may take you awhile to find what worksbest for you.
Remember that it isimportant to handle the put-ter equally with both hands. This means avoiding havinga dominant hand that canimpact the trajectory of theball and speed of the putter.Relax your grip by looseningup not only your hands, butyour shoulders and arms, too.
The PeRfecT sTanceNow that your grip is
relaxed, move yourself back-
ward or forward until you
have a perfect vertical posi-
tion from your eye line to
the ball. Once you find an
eye-ball combination that
works for you, make a men-
tal note of your positioning
so you can make consistent
putts.
Keep your feet comfort-
ably apart at shoulder’s
width. Too narrow or wide of
a stance can cause balance
issues that make it hard to
comfortably strike the ball
with confidence. Keep your
weight toward your toes
rather than your heels for
the most effective stroke.
