GOALOFTHECOURSE:Perceptioninvolvestherouting,identification,andinterpretationof

energyandinformationinourenvironment,bothexternalandinternal.Typically,itbegins

withdetectionbysensoryneurons,andtherelayofthisinformationtospecificneural

networksinthebrain.

Inthisclasswewillinvestigatethemechanismsthatunderliesensorydetectionofspecific

categoriesofstimuli(includingvision,audition,gustation,somatosensation,olfaction,

nociception,etc…),andtheCNSnetworksinvolvedinperceptualdiscrimination,

interpretation,andcomplexcognitiveresponses.

We’llalsolookathowthesecritical,adaptivenetworksdevelop,andhowtheyareinfluenced

bydrugsand,ultimately,decay…

We’llalsoexplorehowartistshaveapproached,understoodandintegrated

aspectsofsensorydetectionandperceptionintooftenextraordinaryworksthatcompel,

move,inspire,andaffectourunderstandingofourselves,andourworld.Duringthiscourse

you’llhavetheopportunitytocreateobjectsdesignedtohelpyoureflectonandunderstand
