Dear friends, I have been at Cookie Cart over 9 years now and when I think about where we are today, I can’t help but reflect on how far the program has come. I see the most change in the young people. What started as a place for teens to work in North Minneapolis has become a dynamic youth development program offer-ing a range of experience for teens, from on the job skills training to classroom learning and community engagement. Cookie Cart’s goal is to expand world views of urban teens, so they envision a brighter future for themselves. Through our program, they have real ownership in the success of Cookie Cart and the way it strengthens our community. What happens from the moment a teenager comes into Cookie Cart to ask for an application to the time they leave for next job is astonishing. We see teens transform right before our eyes, becoming more confident in their communi-cation and leadership skills – which is essential for teens to be able to do well. Joseph, one of Cookie Cart’s teen employees, was at a community event promoting Cookie Cart and offering cookie samples. It was a busy site, and I overheard Joseph explaining what Cookie Cart is to an older woman. He got the facts right, but he was shy and nervous. He stumbled a bit through what he wanted to say. The woman, obviously charmed by his youth, smiled and walked away. By the end of our time there, and about 20 customers later,
It’s more than just a cookie...
Joseph had his “elevator pitch” down perfectly; he was smiling and engaging to people who approached the table. It reminded me of the transformational impact Cookie Cart has on young people. To witness their confidence increase before my eyes is humbling. We help teens overcome social and economic circum-stances so they can move towards a career doing what they love – even if they didn’t know that job existed before they started at Cookie Cart. When we hear from recent college graduates and young professionals that attribute their success to the “Cookie Cart experience”, we are filled with a sense of pride and joy. I hope you are as well. Thank you for helping North Minneapolis teens like Joseph transform, giving them hope for their future.
Sincerely,
Matt Halley, Executive Director

Our Signature Chef’s Dinner has really expanded! What started back in 2009 with a small group of Cookie Cart friends and supporters has become an elegant and energetic evening showcasing the tastes of autumn in Minnesota. More than 120 guests attended last year to support Cookie Cart teens as they learn to become work-ing adults and the event now introduces new supporters to Cookie Cart. You’re invited...and bring your friends!
A Youth Leadership Committee was launched to give older teens an active role in Cookie Cart’s programming. In 2012, they prepared presentations for youth seeking jobs, presented feedback on renovation plans for the
Leadership
North Minneapolis bakery and storefront, offered input on marketing and rebranding projects and contributed to the development of an agency-wide Diversity and Inclusion statement.

The Bakery Program is first stop for Cookie Cart teen employees and the very foundation of our youth employment training. In this hands-on job training program, we teach the fundamentals of job readiness to equip every teen with essential job skills. responsibility to manage their work schedule and themselves with
appropriate workplace behavior and language collaboration to take direction from managers and work together with
peers initiative to complete tasks and solve problems
As teens begin to transition into the mainstream workforce, this advanced work readiness program gives teens the opportunity to meet in small groups and one-on-one with adult staff to identify areas of potential interest for future jobs. We equip teens for work after the Cookie Cart bakery by teach-ing resume and cover letter writing, job search tools and interviewing skills.

Teens
After a few months learning the ins and outs of the bakery, it’s time for our
employees to learn the concepts and skills required to provide exceptional
customer service. At the core of this training is an exploration of interper-
sonal communication skills. Teens who complete this training are eligible
to begin practicing these new skills at Cookie Cart’s front counter as well
as at local promotional events.
At Cookie Cart, we are proud to offer teens the chance to take the National
Career Readiness Certification (NCRC). This is an assessment and certifi-
cation issued by ACT, which shows prospective employers that a teen has
the foundational skills necessary to be successful in the workplace. The
test measures skills employers have identified as essential to job success
including applied math, reading for information and locating information.

We are proud to have you as a partner. Cookie Cart can only accom-
plish its mission with the support of dedicated corporations, churches
and community groups like these. Thank you for hosting career days, volunteering in the bakery along side teen employees, conducting
mock interviews, buying cookies and donating money and materials.
Dear Friends of Cookie Cart, At Cookie Cart, young people receive the foundation for a successful career. They learn employment skills from supportive adults through the experience of their first job. Because of your support in 2012, we were able to serve 140 teens in North Minneapolis, providing more than 22,000 hours of training and work, up 19% from 2011 and 71% over 2010. Thanks to the generosity of our many business and community partners, donors, staff and volunteers, these teens have been given a chance at a brighter future through their first job.
Cookie Cart believes that teaching life, leadership and employment skills is key to breaking the cycle of genera-tional poverty and preparing tomorrow’s workforce. How-ever, we have reached full capacity at our North Minnea-polis facility so, 200 teens who wanted this opportunity this year were turned away. And, we expect demand for our services to grow for teens in neighborhoods facing significant challenges. Our strategic plan and the Capacity Campaign --which we launched last year– will enable us to serve those needs.
As a first step, we’ll focus on our site on West Broadway, renovating our bakery to accommodate more teens and
increasing classroom space to offer more training for those in their first jobs. Then, once we have North Minneapolis at full capacity, we’ll take our model to St. Paul, to a neighborhood facing similar challenges.
At Cookie Cart, we believe it is essential to expand trans-formational employment opportunities for young people and for our community. You are important partners in this process. We want to hear from you to ensure the plans we create are broadly supported by our donors and community partners. In the coming months, we will share information about our progress and invite you to consider a gift to the Campaign. Thank you for your support for Cookie Cart and the teens we serve.
Sincerely,
Anne Johnson
