BHP Architects is a design-led practice which was formed in 1980. We create modern buildings that are intelligible, stimulating and attractive. We specialise in the design of buildings for education, leisure and buildings specifically for use by people with disabilities.

We aim to give an excellent service to our clients and to achieve results of which we can all be proud. Professional teamwork is essential and we believe this embraces the client and contractors, as well as the designers.

We are based in a large open plan studio in North London and the practice consists of two partners and three Associates who oversee a staff of twelve architects, architectural assistants and technicians, two administrative staff, one consultant and two part time staff. The growth and composition of the practice has been carefully maintained to ensure that every project receives the highest standard of design and service with prompt attention to every detail. BHP Architects established an office in Dublin in 2006 and is currently engaged on two major school projects in Ireland. We are passionate about design, but we also believe in good management of the process, from concept to completion and beyond. At the heart of our practice philosophy is a commitment to working closely with our client, the end users and stakeholders, at every stage of the project. This close working relationship provides a real understanding of the needs and aspirations and ensures that every aspect of the project is carefully considered to provide a building which is functional, accessible, aesthetically pleasing, environmentally conscious, user friendly and uplifting to the spirit. For every scheme a carefully selected professional team is formed around a partner who personally implements concept development and maintains daily management of all stages of the project through to completion. Teams are structured to meet all client deadlines, with rigorous production information and cost control systems, which ensures absolute respect for the design, budget and procurement, throughout every stage of the design and construction period. We meet these requirements by assigning adequate numbers of suitably trained personnel for the design, management, performance and verification activities.

The Practice

Design Philosophy

Practice Management

We operate Quality Management systems equivalent to the standards set by ISO 9001, for the administration and control of all projects carried out by the practice. Our quality management systems control all aspects of the programme, including design, budget and maintenance. A series of office manuals detail the procedures for office and project administration, design and document co-ordination, quality control, project management, contract administration, health and safety duties, equal opportunities, etc. These manuals are available on request.

Our quality systems are both project specific and applied to the day to day

operation of the practice. Internal staff audits occur throughout the year covering all aspects of work procedures (administration, project files, drawing/ CAD procedures, correspondence, etc).

We believe that effective communications are essential to the success of all projects. We place great importance on communication with clients, users and stakeholders, the provision of clear, accurate and concise reports, drawings and documentation, including 3D visualisation, animations and models. Consultation gives us vital information to inform the building design and we involve all stakeholders in a variety of different ways from workshops to open days. We also understand the vulnerabilities and sensitivities that certain user groups have and tailor the consultation to suit their needs in order to achieve effective feedback.

Sustainable thinking is completely integrated with design, construction technology and methods, components and choice of materials, therefore it must be considered from the outset of any project and influences the decisions we make. Sustainability, consultation and process management are key components to our approach when designing buildings and we believe that all three are interdependent key components in adding value to any project. The challenge is to design buildings and spaces that balance high quality, durability and value, with the equally important environmental, social and economic aspects of sustainability.

Our own impact on the environment has been assessed and we now have an Environmental Management System which accords with ISO 14001.

Our policy is to comply with Health, Safety and Welfare at Work legislation and

provide and maintain safe and healthy working conditions, equipment and systems of work for our employees and provide information, training and supervision needed for this purpose. We also accept our responsibility for the health and safety of other people who may be affected by our activities. BHP Architects also recognise that occupational health, safety and welfare are of paramount importance in the management of its business and seek to create and maintain a safe and healthy working environment. All employees receive regular training in their responsibilities and to keep them up to date with current and forth-coming regulations and legislation. Training is repeated at regular intervals and whenever changing legislation or working methods require. The office library contains a wide selection of publications recommended by both RIBA and the HSE. The office management procedures include the requirement for health and safety to be considered at every stage of the design process. Employees required to visit building sites are provided with training, as appropriate and necessary for the fulfilment of their duties and the requisite equipment and clothing to carry them out. All employees visiting a building site are required to comply with the requirements of this policy, in particular the provision and use of protective equipment and clothing, including the requirement to wear a safety helmet, protective footwear and ‘high viz’ clothing at all times. BHP Architects shares the knowledge gained on projects across the organisation by way of our ‘cross team’ setup, by regular office meetings and seminars and by encouraging staff to participate in Continuing Professional Development (CPD). We recognise the importance of further education and training and are committed to Continuing Professional Development (CPD) for the partners and all project staff. The partners encourage all staff to participate in seminars and lectures to update their professional knowledge. We are on the RIBA’s CPD mailing list and maintain an extensive and regularly updated technical library, to ensure that it is fully acquainted with forthcoming requirements in connection with all aspects of the building process. All employees are encouraged to maintain and advance their competence and are required to undertake a minimum of 35 hrs CPD per annum, in line with RIBA guidelines. Personal Development Plans are prepared by all professionally qualified members of staff, who are encouraged to discuss these with other colleagues both informally and at in-house seminars on new technologies.

Project Description The new performing arts centre at Coloma Convents Girls' School in Croydon has a large multi-purpose auditorium with retractable seating and acoustic wall panelling, which enables productions of music, drama and dance to be presented in a variety of formats. The domed portico provides a focus for the entrance to the new centre. Queen Boudica Primary School
